There's no denying the fact that EVs are coming onto the scene, and it's for many reasons. The growth is exponential, and I only see the technology getting better and more affordable every day. richard5933 Report post Posted November 26, 2019 No one is talking about being totally oil-free. That's an extreme argument which only serves as a distraction. I agree that combustion engines won't disappear soon, but they will have a smaller and and smaller market share, especially for local drivers and commuters. Even if fossil fuel is used to produce the electricity to charge EVs, the efficiency factor is still there. Having one high-efficiency power plant (augmented by wind and/or solar) is certainly more efficient than having thousands of gasoline engines on the road. manholt Report post Posted November 26, 2019 What drives trains, OTR 18+ wheeler's, all military vehicles, Jets, heavy duty mining equipment & rockets? Other than OTR's, their all EPA exempt. They rely on solar and wind for battery charging. Electric power would work OK for a sailboat getting in and out of a marina, but for a cruising sailboat-- next to useless. There is a very limited amount of power that could be effectively stored in a sailboat battery pack and pretty limited area for solar panels (basically the bimini area). Certainly not enough to motor hour after hour in the ICW. Picturing our many, many sailboat trips from Galveston Bay to the Bahamas with sun up to sun down motoring (prevailing wind is from the E/SE). The Trans Atlantic crossing is also based on the prevailing wind...from North at end of Summer & from way South after Christmas from Spain to Barbados, via Verde Islands.
