manholt Report post Posted November 25, 2019 Getting rid off all Fossil fuel, refineries & Chemical plants...is several centuries away! Thousands of everyday things are made by petroleum, good luck with that.

richard5933 Report post Posted November 25, 2019 This is a fun topic to sit back and watch. How'd we go from charging EVs to the end of petroleum use? There's no denying the fact that EVs are coming onto the scene, and it's for many reasons. The growth is exponential, and I only see the technology getting better and more affordable every day. hammer55 Report post Posted November 26, 2019 mainly because that is why they are pushing electric vehicles, to be so called carbon free, why else, and affordable is neither here nor there, some companies said they will be totally electric by a certain date, with the controlling party telling them this is the rule, no matter how affordable they are, you will never see them made totally without oil, either in manufacturing or usage,
richard5933 Report post Posted November 26, 2019 No one is talking about being totally oil-free. That's an extreme argument which only serves as a distraction. I agree that combustion engines won't disappear soon, but they will have a smaller and and smaller market share, especially for local drivers and commuters. Even if fossil fuel is used to produce the electricity to charge EVs, the efficiency factor is still there. Having one high-efficiency power plant (augmented by wind and/or solar) is certainly more efficient than having thousands of gasoline engines on the road. manholt Report post Posted November 26, 2019 What drives trains, OTR 18+ wheeler's, all military vehicles, Jets, heavy duty mining equipment & rockets? Other than OTR's, their all EPA exempt. Then there are every floating boat out there...even sail boats have engines, type determined by size! No EPA that I know off.
richard5933 Report post Posted November 26, 2019 There are a growing number of sail boats on the water right now which have converted from a diesel engine to all-electric. They rely on solar and wind for battery charging.

They rely on solar and wind for battery charging. Electric power would work OK for a sailboat getting in and out of a marina, but for a cruising sailboat-- next to useless. There is a very limited amount of power that could be effectively stored in a sailboat battery pack and pretty limited area for solar panels (basically the bimini area). Certainly not enough to motor hour after hour in the ICW. Picturing our many, many sailboat trips from Galveston Bay to the Bahamas with sun up to sun down motoring (prevailing wind is from the E/SE). On the way east you are into the wind most all the way from Texas to Florida.
manholt Report post Posted November 26, 2019 Brett. Tacking East bound would get old quickly & your 700+/- miles could easily double or triple! The Trans Atlantic crossing is also based on the prevailing wind...from North at end of Summer & from way South after Christmas from Spain to Barbados, via Verde Islands.
