Yosemite National Park - Where to park

Question

Wife and I are planning our "dream trip" this Spring. We have most of the trip planned, but we have no idea where to stay near Yosemite. We, of course, want to visit the park, but also want to see some of the surrounding areas. We will be towing a Jeep. Can someone recommend a couple of nice campgrounds that are convenient and some things that we do not want to miss.

If it helps, we will be coming from San Diego and we will continue north ... heading to northern Calif., Oregon, and Yellowstone. Any help would be appreciated.

Check out http://www.rvparkreviews.com/.

There are several places inside the park to stay and a lot of places just outside of the park. Sometimes in the summer it is difficult finding places where there is electricity or water, but in the spring things should not be so crowded. Remember, even in the summer it gets cool at night in the park, so pack blankets.

Good luck.

Allan,

Welcome to the Forum. If you can make your trip in June you could catch the FMCA Family Reunion Rally in Gillette, Wyoming. The dates are June 19-20-21-22, 2013.

There are a couple of places that I started looking into for a May trip. One is Yosemite Pines in Groveland, Ca. It has 118 full hook-up sites. Claims to be minutes from the park and is on HiWay 120.

Just outside of Groveland is Yosemite Lakes RV Park. It's Thousand Trails, but they have public spaces too, I hear. It's very close to the Valley.

High Serra RV Park in Oakhurst, CA. It's a little further from the Valley, but closer to Mariposa Grove. It only has 24 Full hook-up sites. It's on HiWay 41. It's about 280 miles from LA.

Good luck and enjoy the wonders of Yosemite National Park.

We stayed at the Grizzly CG five minutes from the west entrance in June 2012.very nice CG.

Would you be referring to Grizzly CG in West Yellowstone, Montana? Yosemite is in California, last time I looked.

Not sure of your route or vehicle but if your not going up the So.Cal coast and instead looking at hwy 99 north .......we often use 395 north for the views etc. Have many times driven over state hwy 120 / Tioga Pass into the park.. Great campground at Saddlebag Lake area 10,000ft. no full hookups and its for RV's under 35ft as I recall. Good Mtn two lane road you just need to be familiar with mountain driving in RV.( Big Bear, Southern Utah, Colorado etc.) Diesel motor pulls the hill better if your driving east to west into Yosemite from 395. Road is open normally middle to end of may buy sometimes may not open until first week or so in June. Saddlebag camground opens in June.Often that upper part of Yosemite (Tuolumne Meadows) is less crowded so you can find camp areas where the Valley and west end seem always to be booked up.
