Update on the update. Heading west on Sept 13. Still planning on going to SD for residency. Was going to go to Rapid City and hook up with Americas Mailbos for our mail forwarding but it was such a hassle trying to get answers to our questions so we gave up on them and went with Dakota Post. So, we will be going to Sioux Falls. I'm still dealing with this Remco disconnect issue so it looks like a stop at Des Moines IA is in order. Really getting crappy service from Remco.

The plan was to go to SD, get our tags and such and head on to CA. In order to get our gun permits we have to be there for 30 days so that is going to make it a bit late for us to go to Oregon. So after our 30 days are up we will be heading south to OK to visit Sweetie Pie's cousin and then on to Houston area. The west to Lubbock for a few days and on to NM, AZ and finally Pahrump NV.

Hope to meet as many good folks as we can

Looks like we will be bypassing Houston

You might look at the RGV this year.

    Bill

Glad the RGV wasn't hit. We were mainly going to Houston to visit friends and then on to Lubbock. Looks like we will be bypassing Houston and going right to Lubbock from Tulsa. I'm sure we will get to RGV at some point but this winter will be down thru NM, AZ then NV.

My strong advice right now is "DO NOT GO TO SOUTH TEXAS AT THIS TIME."

They need every rv space, hotel and motel rooms for the folks from down. And yes the Association has asked every park that has sites to open to every one.

The Great State has been hard hit but the citizens will pull together and be back on their feet, never fear we are rezliiant and strong.

    Herman

I agree. We were going to be in Houston around the first of November but we might take a pass this year and give it more time.

Beware of KOA Cedar City, Utah. I tried to stay at the KOA in Cedar City, Utah 1 year ago and had issues with power pedestal to my Motorhome in site B13.  The park manager said he would have an electrician check the pedestal and contact me with the findings.  He indicated that there was nothing wrong with the pedestal and that the park would not accept responsibility for the damage to my auto transformer or transfer switch in my Motorhome.  I again went to the same campground on July 18th in site B12 and had the same issue again. They told me it was my RV that was the problem.  I knew better because I was using my RV for the last year without an issue.  I left the campground and move 1 mile down the street to another campground and had no issues during my entire weeks stay.

Our friends also had a reservation at the KOA in Cedar City, Utah and they stayed at the park in site B14.  Someone else parked in site B13 and they were having power issues as well.  Again the park told him it was his rig.  I regret that I will not be staying at this KOA in the future as long as the campground is under the current management.

We stayed at this very same CG on our way north to ID from NV. I did have problems with the cable and was told the entire campground was due to be "rewired", including the electric. In fact when we were there, they (not CG staff) were walking around testing all the pedastals. I'm guessing it was to give the CG a quote on the cost. I never had a problem with the electric but yes, I always plug my protector in first and if all the lights are good, I then plug the coach into that.  We were there in early March on A-3. They were taking out a few big old dead trees too. It snowed on us there but it wasn't bad. My biggest complaint is the dip between the park and the road. Very bad and while there we watched coach after coach drag butt on the way out. Most were going left towards I-15 and that seemed to be the worst way to exit. So, we exited up by the laundromat and went right instead and at an angle. Had a pretty good side to side wobble but didn't drag anything.

Looks like whoever they had "rewire" it, didn't do a very good job. Good luck.

Hello all. This is our first post and hope someone might have some thoughts or recommendations for us.

We're located in Western Canada and recently purchased a beautiful, 2000 43' foot Holiday Rambler motorhome. Until such time as we officially retire and spend our winters in the southwestern US, we are considering the option of driving the coach down south (somewhere to be determined), leaving it there and then flying down a few times during the winter for a few weeks at a time. Our thought is we either find a nice campground (not super expensive) and either leave it in a site and pay the rates for the whole winter, or move it to and from a storage facility for the times we come down.

Any information or advice FMCA members might have would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks
Kevin and Cindy Brookwell, Calgary AB

We winter in Pahrump, NV. Nevada Treasure RV Park is very nice and they do have a storage area on site. Only an hour west of Vegas. Maybe we'll see you there. Safe journey.

Our hearts go out to all who are caught in the midst of this disaster.  The pictures are horrible and the personal pain is unimaginable.  Be well, and carry on.

I just saw a thread where the Texas CG owners assoc is opening up the parks to evacuees. Could cause it to be a little crowded down there. Folks headed that way might want to lock in their reservations. What say you Sir?

    Jim,

    Thank you for your service.

Was at Benning 2 years ago a got a personal tour of the Parachute Loft . Man has it changed since packed chutes 54 years ago. 8 years as a Navy Parachute Rigger. Did my training at Lakehurst, NJ.

    Herman

Very cool. During basic at Dix, a few of us went to Lakehurst for some kind of detail that I'm sure I didn't volunteer for. Got to see the Hindenburg monument and the other zeppelin hangers. I forget what we did there but we had lunch inside those hangers. They were huge.

  8. Kind of late getting in here but better late than never.

    1) Jim Wicker

    2) Army

    3) 4 years DEC77 - DEC81

    4) Went in as an E-nothing, 20 months later made Corporal and got out as an E-5 squad leader

    5) 11B1P  Airborne grunt and got the bad back that goes with it.

    6) Basic at Dix, AIT at Benning and jump school also. Went to Bragg with the 82nd ABN during the Zaire call out and was there during the hostage situation wondering why we were just sitting there. In spring of '80 got levied for Korea and volunteered for JSA up on the "Zee. After the tree cutting incident, they started pulling guys out of the eighty duece and slapped MP arm bands on us. People don't realize that in '53 a peace treaty was never signed. They only did a cease fire and I'm here to tell ya, that ain't workin' either. We were shooting at them and they were shooting at us but we're not supposed to talk about that. Spring of '81 went back to Bragg and after a bad night jump, screwed my back up. I went in for the full 20 years but after being jerked around because of my injury, I told 'em to shove it and went back to work at US Steel, bad back and all.

My thanks goes to all who stepped up to the plate.

So much for FamCamps, Linda and I both carry at all times, one reason we have not been back to Canada of late.  Linda is working on that, as we want to go back to Alaska....she has a Federal carry permit (another life).  Do appreciate the heads up!

I hope your powder is still dry after your visit from Harvey.

Another reason we like Pahrump is because that is the location for Frontsite. Free tours and great training for Sweetie Pie and myself.

Can you send me a contact number as we will very likely be through Pahrump or at least 95 heading South. I have a 356 Porsche to deliver sometime in Dec in Reno. I will ship it and then meet it for delivery. I need to have it completed before heading to AZ. Dropping to P gets me away from Vegas and a bresak point and I do not know that I have been south that way to boot. On top of that we will have friends from Eastern Oregon that travel south using 95 as well if weather does not get them like last year.

I too am a Navy Vet though not career. I have not used the services as of yet. I am very healthy for my age group (72) but have a real case of Arthritis the will  be the big problem in the next ten years. Janet is healthy as can be and a few years younger than me. I expect to sell the property I/we own in Colorado in the near future and then will determine rhe residency issue. Currently only plated in Montana.

What did you find from the forum on Bike covers? Thought of that when I bought a rack for my bike yesterday.

Are you familiar with the Military Campgrounds web site?

Whenever we can we stay at the military FAM camps and there are a good number of them. Some are adequate and some are great with a few in-between but the price is usually very good compared to the surrounding civilian campgrounds. Nevada has two, Desert Eagle in Las Vegas and Fallon in/near Reno.

Don't carry firearms if you plan on staying at military family camps.

That will def be a problem then. I was told they all have different policies on weapons. Some are ok, some want to know about them and some want you to store them in their armory till you leave.

  14. On a side note, on our first time out as snowbirds, we did run into a lot of crappy campgrounds. I blame it mainly on our inexperience and lack of knowledge. We weren't FMCA members then either. Didn't get my F# till Chandler this year. Anyway, when we finally did find Nevada Treasure in Pahrump, it was like a breath of fresh air. We would have been there longer than the 2 months if it hadn't of been for the permanents next to us and their yapping mutts. It really is a good RV park with many things going for it and we never got bored at all. We will def be back there this winter because we liked it so much.

That being said, we are definitely going to be considering moving around more often and seeing more things. Thanks again Folks.

  15. Guilty as charged. Some very good points here and I guess we never thought about it. Still new to the whole thing and always learning as we go. That's why I come in here, to learn from you Folks. Took our first snowbird trip last fall and wound up in Pahrump NV. Stayed there for only 2 months though. Liked it so much, we came back to PA, tied up a few loose ends and getting ready to head back west next month. Going full time. We are planning to go back to Pahrump for the season. Even though we are going to be there for 5 or 6 months, I plan on hoisting anchor once a month for a weekend trip mainly to get the coaches juices flowing.

Now you guys have me thinking about moving around more. Like I said, still grasping the idea of all the bennies of full time RV'ing. We were just so happy to be away from western PA in the winter time, haha. Thanks. I owe you all a beer. Stay sharp.

You can save a boatload of money by using FL as your State of residency.  SD and TX tags are VERY expensive by comparison and health insurance can be totally unavailable in SD and TX is very expensive.  Just be sure you look at all the costs before you pick your home.

Thanks Bill, yeh we looked around. Considered a lot of options and SD works for us. 100% DAV so the wife and I both have military ID and can use the VA system. Mostly as just an emergency plan as we work on staying healthy and not needing it. Can get on any post for all the perks as well as fam-camps. Hope to see you out west sometime.

Pedal power bikes or motor?  I have used a sail (sailboats) making shop in Clear Lake, Texas for years.  I give them the dimensions and they make me canvas covers for anything.  BBQ Pit to Bikes and Motor cycles!  Very cost effective and water proof ! :D

Pedal power. That sounds like a good idea. Would you message me their contact info? Thanks
