Boston to Gettysburg

Question

Will be traveling from Boston area to Gettysburg and back.  Have been told to avoid NYC and the George Washington Bridge. All trip planner maps show RT 95 , Have motorhome with toad. What are good travel routes to take?

Well they didn't lie to you. You want to stay off the GW. The last time I got caught and went over the GW it was $76.00. Why not look at going down I-84 and pick up 287 South then I-78 to I-81 to I-83 to Harrisburg then State highway 15 into Gettysburg.

When we leave Gettysburg we take US-30 to US-222 on up to I-78 for just a little while and then east of Easton we pick up HWY-33 then US-209 and usually stay in Stroudsburg, PA. We then have to pick up US-80E to US-209 again. We follow US-209 up through the Deleware Water Gap to I-84 and follow that over to Sturbridge, MA.

Reverse that route. Less stressful than all the Interstates and only a little longer and the scenery is nicer.

p.s., done it pulling a 40' 5'er and the 40' motorhome towing a car.

Retired Trucker Here From the Area./. Get on the Mass Pike and head west to the I-84 exit 9. Follow I-84 to the Scranton Pa area and join I-81 south to the Harrisburg. Depending on the time of day you can exit 81 onto I-83 and travel through Harrisburg to Route 581. 83 crosses the Susquehanna River then makes a sharp curve heading south. You go straight onto 581 and the next exit is US15 south to Gettysburg. If the time is later in the day (rush hour) traffic can be heavy. You can either tough it out with a sometimes slow crawl or take I-81 around Harrisburg to exit 59 and follow 581 back to the US-15 exit south to Gettysburg.

If "money is no object" you could run the Mass Pike to the New York Thruway and get on I-81 south in Syracuse.

NEVER CROSS THE GW BRIDGE

Two years ago I was on I-81 north of Harrisburg and construction had it slowed to a one lane traffic jam that took us two hours to clear.  Check to see if there is still construction going on there and get an assessment of possible delays before including that in your trip plans.

The repairs that Tom referred to were along I-81 in Schuylkill County in the Pine Grove PA area. We came through there last September  with very little trouble. Looked like the repairs were close to done. They were finished entirely before the onset of winter.

Another advantage to running the New York Thruway east of Syracuse. Verona exit 33 (30 miles east of Syracuse) sets the Turning Stone Casino with eateries galore, a golf course, and a very nice RV park south of the casino 3 or 4 miles. 24 hour valet service from the park to the casino and back for free. We will stop there again absolutely.

When up in the NY area be careful, I-95 is THE GW bridge! Every GPS on the planet will send you that way. As a rule of thumb in New England and from NJ north for that matter, if you are near ocean you are also in traffic! Unless you are headed to a beach town in New England drive west of the ocean.

I refuse to cross the GW in a car and ONLY do it for work when they send me into the Bronx :(. The recommendations above are spot on. Ill take a nice country drive any day over a city, especially in an RV!
