  1. I was just plain wrong! Heard some things in my part of PA (mostly Cat people here). Read some things on the net possibly by people with axes to grind, and although it happened many years ago, had a lot of trouble with a brand new big cam 400 Cummins in my first purchased Peterbilt. Left a foul taste, but I need to move on. Hey I am used to being wrong. My DW tells me all of the time. Thanks for the kind words.

    Side Mounted Fans

Just a thought. Could you put a spring loaded interrupt switch in line? If temps are OK you could stop the fan for just a little bit while you are moving in a dusty area. Our rear radiator unit makes quite a cloud in an unpaved area but the fan is always on. My concern is not as much cosmetic as it is mixing with oily residue on the radiator. I can still charge up a hill with very little increase in coolant temp and I want to keep it that way.
  3. I can see that I am on the wrong side of this discussion. I apologize.
  4. I believe I read that earlier models had some problems. Guess that I am just a Detroit and Cat lover, but if I ever get to trade up, a Cummins will be in my future.
  5. Easy enough to do that/ lift the handle into the locked upright position???
  6. IMHO. More valves are there to help the engine builders conform to increasingly onerous EPA regulations. That may be in part why a legendary manufacturer (Caterpillar) chose to leave that part of their business. The more parts added to an engine valve train increases the complexity and possible failure. I don't think adding more moving parts to an engine helps it to be more robust. Just a guess on my part.
  7. Our Dometic has a Low Amnient Temperature switch. If not used, does that use 12vdc to warm the door jams? I thought that it might be hot gas circulating. Bet using 12volts would tire batteries out quickly. We do have an Icemaker in ours.
  8. Another thought would be a ClassC. There are some nice ones on the used market. The power train can be worked on in far more places than a Class A. Especially a diesel pusher. I would probably downsize if I found myself alone. Hope that never happens.
  9. We had a Dometic three way refrigerator in our first class A. We never used the 12 volt heat source. I heard that even while underway the current draw could put a strain on house batteries. If you accidentally chose that mode while dry camping, I am sure you would be out of juice quickly. We used the propane mode while underway or dry camping, and the 120vac when in an RV park.
  10. I love your determination to remain an RV'er. I agree with previous posts. Fix the rough spots done by someone you can trust. Mechanics like that are out there. You will have a home on wheels that you know, and after the repairs you will get away with money saved compared to buying a "new to you" rv. You have True Grit!
  11. My diesel Onan does make a very light clicking sound when preheating the glow plugs. It is more noticeable when you slide the gen out and start it with the onboard starter switch.
  12. I was told by my tire dealer almost one year ago when I had six replaced to bill just the tires on one invoice. Pay for any parts and additional labor on a separate invoice payable there on your card or by check. I was assured that it would save $$$. They knew me because I have dealt with them for some time. From what I have heard, I was well advised.
  13. Actually I thought that my diploma was a free pass on dumb stuff, but I am often called back for refresher courses. Later model Subarus including our Toad have keys with chips in them. You can only reliably buy one from a Subaru dealer and it must be programed for the vehicle that it starts. Our F-150 key has a chip in it. Local True Value sold me one, but it took a few minutes and $75 plus tax to have a spare. Pickup was OK. Have not lost and needed a new key for our latest Subaru. They are $200 or so.
  14. My coach has to go into the shop soon for the state mandated annual inspection. They work on Motorhomes and other RV units as a specialty. I will do some of the preliminary work and pay them to get it out. Might have some resale value that way If it will fit through the door.
  15. I hope he didn't because I have been to that school on other matters. It is not fun. I will be tinkering with my batteries tomorrow. I will heed his advice.
  16. Oh! By the way! Welcome to the forum. There are a lot of smart members here that will be able to help you. I have learned quite a bit from them. My trucking skill has been some help, but Class A RVs, especially DPs are a different thing entirely.
  17. As indicated earlier/ I want to use the space for a cat litter box. When we had only one cat, we left the box in view on the main living area floor. We now have two cats. Might add a third one. Who knows. Could not find a better spot. Some have indicated using the shower. Not for us. We have the Harvest Tub Shower Combo. My wife enjoys a tub bath now and then. We do not want to do laundry as often as the capacity of of this small unit requires. The drying takes even longer than normal. We are happy doing laundry at park facilities. It is sometimes a social event. If we were high rollers with a 45 foot unit equipped with stacked units, I might feel differently, but given our circumstances, I doubt that will happen. Wish it would, but I think probably not.
  18. I checked on the net. Weighs just about 150 lbs. Since most of my friends have retired and moved south, I would probably have to pay someone to help if I want it out in One piece. It appears to be in almost new shape. I may use the "Brett Method." Brad/ I would enjoy the pics that you have . can they be sent by PM or should I send you my off site email address? Everybody's advice is appreciated. At least I know that one way or the other it can be done.
  19. Bought a new gasser in 1988. The chassis was referred to as a John Deere, but quickly became a John Deere/Oshkosh when Oshkosh bought the chassis division. Ours was also four wheel disc brakes that were hydraulic. Suggest a brake fluid flush if one hasn't been done in awhile. Brake fluid is hygroscopic. When the water boils braking force is sometimes all but lost. There was a parking brake on ours between the drive shaft and the tranny that was spring applied and released by vacuum if memory serves. Maybe your transmission is stronger, but the parking pawl was removed in mine. Gotta be a lot of info out there because quite a few were built. Ours was powered by 460 ford with a Holley built (Ford) carburetor. What a noisy beast!
  20. Thanks to both of you. I hoped to get it out by myself, but that probably won't happen. I will find some help.
  21. Surprised that CRT sets were put in a coach in 2007.
  22. Thanks Brett! So it will probably not be quick task. Get out the Dremel!
  23. I am planning the removal of our Washer combo. Is it a relatively easy task? Is it anchored to the floor? We don't use it, and the space would be a good spot for a cat litter box.
