rfsod48 Report post Posted February 16, 2018 What is the typical weather in Padre Island/ South Padre Island towards the end of March? Will the area still be flooded with winter Texans?
0 manholt Report post Posted February 16, 2018 Hi Roland. In a word, YES! Some start drifting North around the end of March, but the "Great Migration" don't happen until first/second week of April. Where are you at now?
0 rfsod48 Report post Posted February 17, 2018 Phoenix until the 15th of March, then we plan on winding our way down towards Padre. Want to check out area for possible next year.
0 wildebill308 Report post Posted February 17, 2018 Try this, Call Texas Trails RV Resort, in Pharr (I would call now) and see if they have a spot. it is fairley centralized to the area and would make a good home base to check out the area. 0 michaelhillhouse Report post Posted February 17, 2018 Whatever you do Don't go to Mustang Island across from Port Aransas . It cost me over 3000.00 for the windshield on another motorhome because the sites are so close I clipped it trying to leave > Believe me the RV Parks are bad down there MIchael
0 wildebill308 Report post Posted February 17, 2018 Mustang Island State Park is way up the coast and wouldn't be a candidate for spending the winter. Well at least I don't think so. But I did spend October on the golf coast 3 years a go. Bill

0 manholt Report post Posted February 17, 2018 Wayne. You don't shoot anything or body, in golf... X over/under par! WBill. Mustang Island/Corpus has a lot of winter Texans...We even have them on Galveston Island. The only thing now is, how long will it take to re build the infrastructure, after Hurricane Harvey! Pioneer RV Park at Aransas Pass is operational again and they are playing golf again next door. Escapee Chapter 11, will be there in April. Rockport is still hurting, but have friends that are going to the "Oyster Festival", first week of March, in their RV's!
0 manholt Report post Posted February 17, 2018 Wayne. I re read WBill...forget my comment about golf. He might really be out there shooting something!
0 wayne77590 Report post Posted February 17, 2018 Uh huh! What'd you shoot today? That was from my golfing friends - when I was golfing.
0 manholt Report post Posted February 18, 2018 You don't like golf anymore or it don't like you? Roland, is trying to find a RV park, golf and good restaurants, within a reasonable distance of each other, for next winter! Lower Rio Grand Valley, has all of that, in the tri angle, between Harlingen, Brownsville and Edinburg! They also got wall to wall people....I can't handle that part. I need room to roam, that's why I don't have any use for Sub divisions where you hear the folks next door burp!
0 manholt Report post Posted February 18, 2018 It's a nice place! Played there in Feb of 1990...lot less people.
0 wildebill308 Report post Posted February 18, 2018 Carl, I was 10 under on the front 9 till the beer cart came buy. See I do know golf lingo. I am glad Rockport is getting back in shape. I liked that area but it is not far above sea level. Bill
0 wayne77590 Report post Posted February 18, 2018 Carl, I know how you can improve your golf game. Take a two week vacation from golf. Then quit playing.
0 manholt Report post Posted February 19, 2018 Wayne. I have played twice in the last 14 month's. Right now, my game is puuurfect par! Linda has played once in 20 years, that was in October 2017...5 over! I need a lot of practice, we are playing 2 day's with the Cruising Cajun's, starting March 11. We where invited to their rally! 0 wildebill308 Report post Posted February 20, 2018 Carl, be carful and don't get into any wagers those Cajun's are looking for you. Bill
0 rfsod48 Report post Posted February 20, 2018 My biggest handicap is me! As I have aged I can’t hit the ball as far and it is hard to reprogram the brain. Are most of the courses in the RGV country clubs or or their some public play courses? With my current game anything over $75-80 is not worth it. Hope to get back in groove this summer when we are back in Michigan.
0 wayne77590 Report post Posted February 20, 2018 Carl, sit back, relax and let your age catch up with you! p.s., when I was playing it was 5 or 6 times a week. Handicap, besides playing golf, never got below 10. Still made a lot of money in the skins game.
0 manholt Report post Posted February 20, 2018 Roland. It's Texas! We got a lot of public golf and most are in the $25/$35 range! Not many in the $$$ range your talking about, unless it's semi private! Even then it's mostly $50/70. My handicap is between my ears! Wayne. Same, I got to a 12. Now it's probably a 24+! Linda had a 3...in October she was 1 under after 9 and that was playing with a old set of Pings that I have...For Christmas, she got fitted to a new set of Taylor made (men's), her drives average 240+, swing speed is 97.3mph! WBill. Have spent a lot of my life around Cajun's, I never gamble with them! We are spending 3 day's with a best friend, before the rally, in Kaplan, LA. He's now doing 96 acres of crawfish in his retirement from Chevron! Can I OD on Mudbugs? NO!! I love them.

It would make a good topic for many here on the Forum. Thanks Herman
0 tbutler Report post Posted February 20, 2018 Here is a link to the Golf Courses in the Rio Grande Valley. Most of these are public courses. There is a map so you can see the distribution of courses throughout the RGV and there is also a link to each of the courses so you can check their rates. If you come to spend the winter, you will find some courses that offer a winter season membership which will reduce your cost considerably. I'm certain there are also other RV parks throughout the RGV that have golf groups that get discounts for playing at a certain course regularly. Regarding golf and the weather in March, you can count on warm (80's daytime) windy (15 to 20 regularly) weather. Most of our spring weather is rain free and largely cloud free as well. The south Texas winds can be a challenge for any golfer. Yesterday we were on the Los Lagos course, an Edinburg city course. We play that course every Monday in a group from our park. The group rate is $32 with a cart, $21 if you walk the 18 hole course. We have also played a number of other parks in the area. Temperatures yesterday were 73 degrees at our 8:00 tee time and were in the mid 80's by the time we completed our round of golf. Winds yesterday were 20 to 25 with gusts to 35. I had to put my hat in the golf bag. It was that or lose it in a lake! Being used to the wind, my game got better as the day got windier! I play for the fun of chasing the ball around the course and for the exercise that results. Our golf courses are also populated with a variety of interesting and beautiful birds seen up close many times. American White Pelicans, Spoonbills, Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets, Great Blue Herons, Black Necked Stilts, Black Bellied Whistling Ducks, Long-billed Curlews and an assortment of ducks can be seen on the courses in the RGV. We do learn to watch out for fire ant mounds. Standing on one of them will definitely ruin your day. Some courses are better about controlling them than others. There actually are RV's headed north right now. That will accelerate as we get closer to Easter. By early April at least 50% of the Winter Texans will be on their way north. I can assure you that almost any park in the RGV has a place for you to stay right now. The area is busy with a population of over 1 million in the the RGV area. South Padre Island will have a booming population around Easter and spring break for Texas schools. Spring break activities (concerts, parties, etc.) are scheduled March 7 to 21 and Easter this year is April 1. I'd plan to be somewhere other than South Padre Island during that period of time. Stay elsewhere in the RGV and visit SPI once the spring break crowd has dispersed.
