Houston TX to Mobile AL

Howdy everyone.

At the end of October I will be headed from the Houston Texas area to the Mobile Alabama area.  I have heard for year that I-10, I-20, and parts of US-190 through Eastern Texas and much of Louisiana are in bad shape.

Does anyone have an update on that?

Suggested routes?  Does not need to be the quickest or shortest route either.  I am retired so I have the ability to take my time.

We have used that section of 10 the last two winters heading east from Colorado. We picked up 10 in San Antonio and took it all the way to Pensacola, Fla., I can not say that it was all that bad. There was some congestion in Louisiana around the Lake Charles area. I am really at heart like you and have a preference for secondary roads but that east Texas area is not conducive to that kind of travel. Les us know what you come up with

We like 90 from Houston to Beaumont, I-10 to Vidor and take 12 to 190, drop down from 190 to I-10 in Baton Rouge, then I-10 to I-12 to I-10 again....unless you wan't New Orleans.

You can also take hwy 1 before you cross the river and it will take you to 90E in Raceland, LA.

Another is I-49 to hwy 67 to NO.

Lot's of options and do/see in LA.

I was in the middle of typing when the power went off in the house, so I came to the MH to resume, I was going to say that I-20 should not be in your directions, and I-12 as Carl pointed out is a good bypass of NO. Been three years since last time I went that way, was then and probably always be some construction on those roads.

DOC, I personally would run the way Manholt recommended. Reason being the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge (depending on your coach) could be comfortable or white knuckled. We crossed it in 2013 is a gas coach (no air ride) it wasn't much fun, we bounced all the way across and not in a fun way. Bypassing New Orleans isn't a bad thing either and his route doesn't take you much out of the way at all.

As Carl pointed out, 190. I'd take that all the way to Covington and then drop down to I-12.

Doc, since you don't seem to be in a rush and would like to take you time and see a bit. Here is a route you may enjoy.

Hwy 59 north to Livingston. You could make an appointment and have your coach weighted.

On north on Hwy 59 to Lufkin then to Nacogdoches Tour the Foretravel Plant and stop in at Motorhomes of Texas. Who knows you might find a coach you can't live without.

From Nac you can take Hwy 21 and Louisiana 6 Natchitoches, Louisiana.

Take Hwy 84 to Natchez, Mississippi then Hwy 61 to Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Take I-12 out of Baton Rouge to 1-10 on to Biloxi, MS, Pascagoula, MS and into Mobile Alabama.

While you are in Mobile you could also venture over to Pensacola and maybe see the Blue Angles.

Not the most direct but a heck of a lot of great things to see and do.

Great bunch of suggestions thru for us in the WEST thru a congested city landscape when you look at a map. It takes folks like you frequent travelers to aid those of us from another part of the country to find other sightful places to see without the hassle of trial and error.  I wroy the all down for next years travel East.

Want to avoid Houston coming from the west on I-10?  Pick up Hwy 36 to Brenham, then Hwy 105 to Beaumont. Completely miss Houston and Metropolitan Houston traffic.  There are RV Parks along the way on Hwy 105. Nice easy relaxing drive.

To stay off of I-10 pick up Hwy 12 and don't forget to stop in Kinder, LA and the Casino, then pick up 190 for the rest of the trip.
