  1. Have a travel trailer premiered for a Furrion router/ internet provider. The hardware is good but the internet side is poor. Data pricing is triple that of most service providers and support is an endless run around of we are not taking calls and sitting on a chat for hours. If you are not a computer geek I suggest simply using a hot spot instead. The router is nice but over priced and difficult to set up and change every time you move and re connect
  2. We moved from Las Vegas to South Florida. Living in a campground with very poor WiFi. We have 3 lines on unlimited AT&T cell service. I am looking for reliable internet plan for firestick that won’t break me. We stream tv and movies and don’t have hot spot available on cell phones. I am hoping someone can guide me through plans and equipment needed for the least expensive route. Thank you in advance.
  3. All, I purchased a RV with ~10+yr old electronics and entertainment systems and am now planning an upgrade to the system. My initial thinking is there are 3 critical and core elements, Internet mobile access, Internet/digital streaming TV and the switching system. The current installation allows the possibility to upgrade the internet mobile access and front lounge TV, utilizing the current amplifier/switching to continue using the speaker system and CD player. (I am old enough to have CDs to put in this player.) The plan and upgrade steps look like, eliminate the plasma TV and replace with a current internet-enabled, digital streaming capable TV, ~$350. Eliminate the satellite hook-up, now inactive, and replace with an Inseego MiFi 2100 5G capable mobile hotspot. Since I'm already a Verizon customer, it will be easier/simpler to add this device and service to my existing account. And even though 5G service is currently limited, this device will default to 4G, and capture 5G whenever/wherever available. Also, the Inseego will allow any mobile phone/tablet to connect to it providing internet access to any/all devices coming onto the RV. The TV is just another device "paired" to the hotspot, wired or wireless. ~$60/month for service and ~$400 device cost. Utilize the existing amplifier and switching device to bring the audio signal into the existing Bose speaker system and continuing use of the CD player. For folks having done some/all of this type of upgrade before, do I have this about correct? Am I missing major items/issues, and if so what? Any suggestions/recommendations, possible problems, etc. are greatly appreciated. And I'm able to write this all up, step-by-step, if folks believe others can reuse/apply the template. Thank you. --- Jon
  4. I'm in Memphis, using my FMCA Mifi through Sprint, and service has really degraded. Is this because of the switch over to T-Mobile? Is FMCA working on a replacement program?
  5. All, I'm evaluating Internet connection options to support basic internet browsing, email and TV/audio streaming services. I've noticed there appears to be 2 primary options to make the Internet connection and acquire quality services. I'm interested in folks taking either of these approaches and their experience installing, setting up and getting quality services. The 2 approaches I've investigated are: 1. Use a major mobile phone service provider, e.g. AT&T, Verizon and install their hotspot device. The Verizon options are the Jetpack MiFI 8800L or MiFi M2100 5G UW. Both are installed inside the RV and provide inside WiFI services for TVs, tablets, smartphones, etc. 2. Use a major rooftop antenna supplier with connection to the respective mobile data/phone service providers, e.g. AT&T, Verizon. The Winegard 360+ or Connection 2.0 are the examples here. These involve installing a rooftop antenna, similar to satellite TV, and then wiring into the RV. I believe either Winegard product requires a respective mobile service SIM card to make the connection into their network. Option #1 appears simpler/easier, the question is quality of connection/service. Please advise anyone current installation approaches and setup/operational experiences. Thank you.
  6. For years I have been using a NetGear WN2000RPTv2 network extender as my internal private Wi-Fi network and internet connector. It has finally failed and gone to electronics heaven or is that the cloud! Does anyone have any suggestions on what a good product is to replace it with? What it was doing for me was giving me the ability to... connect to an Access Point for internet connectivity, create my own private Wi-Fi, give me router functionality connect my Western Digital MyCloud device to it distribute my entertainment (movies, music, pictures etc.) throughout the coach.
  7. Has anyone used this? We just bought a class a to drive between Texas and Alaska and have some connectivity issues (cell plan thru AT&T). Any advice would be appreciated.
  8. For many years prior to retiring, selling my house and traveling/living full-time in my motorhome beginning in March 2017, I had a FAX machine in my home. Although FAX is an old technology and my machine did not get heavy use, it was an especially convenient way to quickly and securely communicate with those who were unwilling or unable to use email. On vacating my house I lost that convenience and particularly missed it when, during my travels, I had to use an office supply store or mailing/shipping facility to send/receive FAX messages. Even wireless printers and FAX machines need a conventional phone line to send and receive FAX transmissions which, until recently, was unavailable to me as a full-time RV traveler. There are, of course, Web-based services that will convert email messages into FAX messages and vice versa, but their monthly charges usually range from about $8 to $17. Free FAX services severely restrict the number of pages and quantity of FAX messages that can be sent or received. Here is the way I was able to recently obtain a conventional phone line that operates wirelessly. An OBi200 1-Port VoIP Phone Adapter with Google Voice and Fax Support for Home and SOHO Phone Service can be connected to an Internet router with a standard CAT-5 cable. After it has been configured with Google Voice, unlimited phone and FAX calls can be made via the OBi200 using VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) anywhere in North America without any monthly or calling fees. Recently I was introduced to the Obihai Technology OBIWIFI5G 2.4/5GHz Wireless 802.11AC Adapter for the OBi200 which allows me to use my cellular hotspot for the VoIP Internet connection. Like most RV owners, I don’t have an Internet router in my coach. Those who do will not need the wireless adapter. Amazon, Newegg and other on-line sellers sell the OBi200 for about $50 and the OBIWIFI5G adapter for about $25, making the total investment for having a conventional phone line in my coach with unlimited calling and FAXing for less than a year’s cost of the cheapest Internet FAX service. Here is a word of caution; VoIP does of course consume data. My data plan with Verizon is unlimited but if yours has limits you’ll need to take VoIP data consumption into account when considering costs. My campground’s office kindly allowed me to use one of their hard-wired Internet connections to configure my OBi200 and wireless adapter, but once that was done their connection was no longer needed. For my needs I used the FAX tool already available in my Windows computer and a modem connection to the phone line. If I’m sending a document from paper, I use my portable scanner, which I already owned. Otherwise I can FAX documents that already on my computer as easily as I can print them. Received FAX messages pop up on my screen which I can view, save and/or print as needed. Conventional FAX machines can now be bought for as little as $25 on-line. Since my installation, I’ve been able to FAX documents thousands of miles across North America and locally as reliably as I could with the land-line that I had in my home. Frequent boondockers can run the OBi200 directly on 12-volts DC or with its included 120/240 volt AC adapter.
  9. Today I was posting information and trying to include links for the users convenience. In the past I have typed the title of the link and highlighted it, then copied the desired internet address. Once done, I have selected the link icon and simply pasted the internet address where required. The caption for the link comes from the previously highlighted text. When completed I select insert into Post and the process was done. Today, the link was not attaching to the highlighted text but instead was now inserting the link with the highlighted post text in a new location, at the top of the text in the post. This required the additional step of dragging the link to the desired location in the text. In the past, it would be where the highlighted text was, not requiring any dragging and dropping. It is a small but aggravating change in how inserting links works.
  10. We are about to become full timers but we have an Internet issue. My Wife is not yet retired and wuld like to continue working remotely. The problem is she has to have a hard wired DSL connection. She is not allowed to use Wireless or Satalite. Are there Campgrounds that would have the capabilty to have wired Internet at the site? We are looking to be down South for Winters and Maine for the Summer. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank You Bill & Barb
  11. Has anyone tried Walmart's Straight Talk hot Spot, From what I understand it uses Verizon towers It seems to have service everywhere I need it to. I would very much like to get input as I am IN NO WAY tech savvy and my cell phone, is pay as you go, Boost Phone I think it's by sprint. Yes I know What you are thinking but that's what my wife wanted because a friend has one. ok I'm rambling on, any info on the Walmart straight talk hot spot would be appreciated. Getting ready for the Spring.
  12. We purchased MaxxFi for our coach and its the best internet service we've had. We stream Netflix on 3 tvs at the same time as using the WiFi for the normal stuff without issue. They're a little more expensive to initially purchase the hardware compared to something like a mifi, but it is a lot faster and I get the luxury of it being hard wired in so I never worry about batteries or losing it. We have the external antenna and are on the unlimited plan they offer. The service was a little slower when we came through Colorado but we were still able to stream the netflix movies while using other devices without any issues. No biggie, especially since that's the only hiccup we've noticed. Here's their website if you want to check them out www.MaxxFi.com
  13. On the road, I occasionally camp at a site with poor or limited cell reception. Since i get on the internet via my laptop using my smart phone and PDAnet, this is important. I am interested in what brands others are using to boost their cell signal. I am on Verizon.
  14. We have been on the road for over a month now accessing the Internet with the Verizon MiFi boosted by a Wilson Sleek and an antenna on our RV's roof. In campgrounds near Lone Pine, CA, Truckee, CA, and Bend, OR we experienced great connections to the Internet with the available 4G or 3G service with no dropped connections. This was to be expected. The real test came when we moved to a campground on the shore of Paulina Lake in the Newberry National Volcanic Monument near La Pine, OR. There was no useable cellphone service because we were below the caldera rim in every direction with no line of sight to any cell tower. We could get an inbound call ring on our iPhones, but could not talk when we answered, and we could not do any outbound calling. The good news is that with the MiFi using the Sleek we could get 3G access to the Internet and send and receive email, download news services, access Google apps, and use online database query apps. Yes, it was slow and from time to time the connection had to be reset. But that was our experience last year in many places without the Sleek. In addition, we were able to make calls with our iPhones using the Sleek. This is in contrast to a ranger I met in the park, who had to drive five miles over the caldera rim and back every day to complete his daily MiFi access to the Internet as part of his research project. All around the Wilson Sleek is doing what we wanted.
  15. My wife and I are about to embark on our third summer on the road visiting mainly U.S. and state campgrounds. We have been using the Verizon MiFi for two years both on the road and at home. Our travels take us to Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Washington, Oregon and Northern California. We selected the MiFi because the Verizon network coverage map at the time was the best for the areas we were visiting. We both travel with laptops and use them everyday to e-mail, run my business, blog, and surf the net. Generally, we do not use Wi-Fi. But if we did, we would access it directly from our laptop's wireless port. The first year, 2011, we were very pleased with our ability to get online and do our thing. Our expectations were not very high, because we were going to remote areas with many mountains and canyons, both not good for cell service. However, we were surprised to find that the MiFi's 3G performance was actually OK and in some cases better than the cell phone service in the same location. For sure there were many areas with no service at all. So far so good! The summer of 2012 was different. Our expectations were higher, while the service in several places we returned to was not as good. For example, in one of the campgrounds in Grand Teton National Park in the exact same site, we had virtually no Internet access even though we had acceptable 3G access the prior year. It appears that with increased Internet usage and the network build out not keeping up, we were left to going into town every other day to do our networking. After these poor experiences, we needed to do something to enhance our MiFi's performance and to hopefully get 4G from time to time. So we went in search of a solution. Note by the way, our home is on the edge of the 4G coverage area. During these two years our MiFi's performance at home was also not up to our expectation. While the service was good when it worked, it fell out of service every hour or so. Yes, we use the net throughout the day and evening. After many sessions with Technical Support, they finally said to set the MiFi to 3G only. This helped but did not really solve the problem. Our solution had to also address the home usage problem.
  16. Hello everyone! We are Tim and Alisa Sheets. We live in Nevada and are in our late 40's/early 50's with grown children and 12 grandbabies & one on the way . We've recently bought a 1987 Bounder and will begin full-timing at the end of April. It's both exciting and scary . We're going to Washington to do a gate attendant job for 5 months up by Spirit Lake. We're looking forward to it; it sounds really pretty there but I'm kind of worried about not having any electricity. We are walking away from our home & selling practically everything we own. Deciding what to put in the motor home is pretty daunting. I don't even know where to start. We don't want to have to rent a storage shed for anything. Any tips for downsizing? Also, I'm used to having a well stocked refrigerator. How do y'all shop and store food with those small fridges? I know that people are able to have TV and internet when they are RVing.... how do you do that? Sorry, lot's of questions. I'll be browsing this site to see if I can find answers. Any hints/tips/advice will be greatly appreciated. ~Alisa
