The Great Lakes Roadtreking Shoreline Tour

We’re about to set off on a 3,500-mile trip that will take us farther than if we drove across country, from the Atlantic to the Pacific. And although we till visit eight states, we will never really leave the Midwest. We’ll be driving much of the U.S. shorelines that touches the five Great Lakes. I’ve wanted to do this trip for years. ow, thanks to Verizon Wireless and in partnership with Pure Michigan, we’re about to set off, starting from the Lake Ontario shoreline near Otswego, NY, and the

Melvin visits relatives in Berwick NS

6-11-14 Another beautiful day in Nova Scotia, so we took a drive to Berwick about 90 miles from our campsite to see Dorothy and Jimmy Sheriffs. About four generation back, her grandfather Hussey is the same as Ruth's. James Hussey settled in Aylesford less than 10 miles away. It was very interesting to learn about the area and hear about the farm James owned. After a few hours at Dorothy's home we took them to lunch at a nearby restaurant. When our visit ended, we took off for Morden on the Bay

New Caledonia

By evening on Wednesday the seas had calmed somewhat and the ride to our next stop is much gentler than the previous days ride. Our route took us further west and south. The day was cool with light winds. The captain informed us that we were cruising at a relaxed 7 knots, down from the 12 knots of previous days. We had plenty of time to reach our next island paradise, Lifou, part of the Loyalty Island group. On Lifou, we toured a botanical garden and vanilla farm. The botanical garden t

Cape Cod: Where All of America is Behind You

I confess to being a bit of a snob about the east. My journalist days often took me up and down the eastern seaboard, mostly to big cities where crime, decay, overcrowded neighborhoods and a general malaise of discontent seemed to be the chief characteristic of the people and places. Such is the danger of journalism. Seeing bad news makes you skeptical. Seeing too much bad news makes you a cynic. And being cynical is not a good way to live. So it’s good to visit the east now in an RV, where we

Melvin visits Spring Garden

6-10-14 Our morning began with French toast on the stove and bacon from the grill. Both were delicious! After a bit of tidy up in the coach, and putting away some laundry (imagine a washer/drier in the coach), we headed Lucy back to Halifax. First stop was the Spring Garden. Ruth and I took a 45 minute stroll and loved every part of it. I added some pics if the WiFi lets them through. Melvin posed for a few selfies. In the afternoon we visited the Nova Scotia archives to do some research. Fou

The Making of a Roadtrek: The Movie

If any of you have been to the Roadtrek factory in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada for a tour, you would have an idea of what it takes to build a Roadtrek, how busy the manufacturing floor is and how passionate everyone there is about the product. For those who have not been able to make the trip (and we highly recommend that you do), we are happy to present a video tour for you on what it takes to build the #1 selling Class B Motorhome in North America. Jennifer and I spent two weeks in Kitch

Melvin see's maritime museum and attends Mass at St Mary's Basilica.

6-9-14 Staying at a KOA near Halifax. Free WiFi, you get what you pay for. It's slower than a modem and works when it feels like it. I see last nights blog never uploaded. Here it is again. Today started off with another blue sky. Later in the day it got a bit cloudy, but no rain. After our Blueberry muffin breakfast we. Headed for Halifax. After driving by St. Mary's, to get the times for Mass, we headed for the Maritime Museum. Many displays of Canada's naval history, the story of the 191

RV Destination: New York’s Letchworth State Park

One of the nicest state parks we’ve found anywhere in the country is the 14,000 acre Letchworth State Park, 35 miles southwest of Rochester and about 60 miles south of Buffalo. Often dubbed as “the Grand Canyon of the East,” Letchworth offers easily accessible and spectacular views of a deep, 600-foot gorge carved out of the limestone and sandstone shale by the Genesee River. Suggested to us as we were making our way from Michigan to Cape Cod by Roadtreking regular W. Dan Hulchanski, Jennifer a

Melvin joins the RCMP

Woke up to blue sky today. After a review of points of interest on Garmin we decided to head for the water front. Melvin has been good, so we took him along in Lucy. The pier was bustling with activity. Musicians, brake dancers, and vendors in the beautiful 70 degree weather with a gentle breeze. When we stopped to enjoy a solo bag piper,Melvin had a spiritual moment. As amazing grace was played, he decided to join the RCMP. IN NO TIME AT ALL HE WAS IN FULL UNIFORM! To celebrate the occasion we

Melvin breaks wind on way to Halifax

6-7-14 Today started off by wakeing up to partly cloudy skies. Ruth and I had breakfast and set about securing everything for our next leg to Halifax. I learned you can't put the front side in if one of they storage doors are open. 5 minutes of panic before I figured it out. Hooked up Lucy and off we went. Today's driving lessen was all about strong cross winds and very bumpy roads. I did a bit of zigzagging before I got use to it. Ruth however had a tough time. Her brake peddle did not work a

The Cruise Begins

This is the cruise that started the whole trip to New Zealand and Australia. We signed on for the cruise and later decided to make it part of a longer trip. Now with our exploration of New Zealand and Australia behind us we are exploring another part of the world. Our cruise started in Fiji on Saturday, May 31 in Lautoka, Fiji. Leaving Lautoka at sunset we sail for a day and a half to the island nation of Vanuatu. Once known as the New Hebrides Islands, this group of many islands is sparsel

Aerial Hopscotch

May 29, Thursday, we bid farewell to Australia. After three months our Australian adventure comes to a close. A van to the airport, check in with the airlines and proceed through security and we’re on our way. Of course it just doesn’t happen that quickly. We awoke at 5:00 a.m. to catch a shuttle at 5:30 to the airport. By the time we’ve checked our baggage, it is 6:30. We’re given an exit card to complete to clear customs and immigration as we leave Australia. We stopped for breakfast an

Melvin takes a powder

6-6-14 Woke up to another day of rain and news they caught the cop killer. Moncton is open for business again. Ruthie and I were getting cabin fever, so we left Melvin on the sofa as I unhitched Lucy and we took off for Alma NB ... Sweet little fishing village...about 80 miles away. Many wonderful views and vistas of the bay of fundy along the way. At the end of Rt 114 (the road to our home has the same #) we had lunch at the Parkland Village Inn, Ruth had a lobstah roll and a bowl of seafoo

Melvin makes it past Canadian customs

6-4-14 Up early and watch the news while I set up new GPS. Sorry Jenn I took the one from the burb. Use Waze on your phone. After coffee and a raisin bagel we went for a walk about. Then I mounted our plates "Castle3". Kind of a dreary day, so we'll watch a movie after lunch. First cooked meal in the Castle was spaghetti, yum yum. 6-5-14 No WiFi in Maine and cell service was intermittent so my version hot spot only worked for one up date. Today we got underway at 11 AM after a fillup of pro

Sydney Harbor

By Tuesday we had accomplished all our first priority activities for our stay in Sydney. The forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday was a chance of rain but the rain never materialized. We left the hotel and took a city bus downtown to Circular Key, the heart of the transportation hub in Sydney. The bus route terminates near the ferry terminal and the commuter train station. We went to the ferry terminal and located the Manly Fast Ferry, a ferry service for people traveling to and from destinati

Melvin's first ride

6-3-14 Down the driveway and parked to hookup Lucy @ 11AM. 2 hours behind schedule. The first leg took us to campers world in Chichester. Dropped a few hundred on had to haves and a bit more on want to's. Next leg took us to a rest stop near Wells ME. Had an nice sandwich from the fridge and stretched our legs. Also picked up a slew of travel flyers. Best selection I've ever seen. Now it gets interesting! Rush hour traffic and everyone wanted our space. Got past exits every 2 miles and all o

Finding Free Places to Overnight in Your RV

There’s a real battle going on out there in the RV world and it pits some powerful interests against those who resent paying for services they don’t need and only want to take advantage of the generous offers of places like Wal-Mart, Cabella’s, Cracker Barrel and other businesses that not only allow but welcome brief overnight stays by traveling RVers. But for more than a decade now, campground owners and their national association have quietly been working behind the scenes to convince local g

Melvin gets tires & inspection

After many frantic phone calls this AM we did find an inspection place. All is well. No problems found and new sticker on windshield. Also got two new front tires. Old ones had 12 years on them and still looked great. Even the inside was inspected very closely. Oh we'll, peace on mind as we take off for Canada.

Note to self about inspection

I scheduled 2weeks ago for inspection. Found out this AM they can't do rigs with air brakes. Guess I need to be very specific when I ask if they can do trucks and motor homes. Now I'm calling all over central nh and everyone is booked this week. Looks like our trip will be delayed and shortened by a week as I need to be back by June 30.

The Big Climb

Our third day in Sydney, Monday, May 26, is a big day. We start out with a second ride on the tour bus. We purchased a two-day ticket. There are two routes for the scenic drives, this one takes us south of the city to Bondi Beach and then back to the city. We remained in the urban area the whole trip but are away from the large buildings of city center. This trip was interesting as we traveled through many older parts of the city. Bondi Beach itself is a gorgeous wide beach with a nice sur

The Quest for a REAL CUP OF COFFEE

Downsizing from a 1400 sf townhouse to a 34 ft 7 inch Motorhome was pretty easy. We gave away just about everything - without much hesitation. Unless you count the 10x15 storage unit....... It is full of books and Christmas decor. But no coffee makers reside there. Pot 1: Cuisinart Grind and Brew coffee maker It was too big for the counter. It pulled too much electricity. Did we really need a 10 cup coffee maker for just the two of us? So it found a new home with our son. We can lovingly us
