Eighteen Months, Part One

I have been suffering from a bad case of the blahs, so I have not made a blog entry for some time. You could call it a case of the blags. Today, however, I seem to have a sudden burst of energy. I am looking out my office window at my snow-covered coach and at the 10-inch-thick white blanket that is covering my front yard as well as the rest of the neighborhood and I feel inspired to write something. What, I don't know. I have not done any RVing lately. Nothing except trying to keep my coach w

1/24/10

My wife and I are getting ready to take our coach to Florida for several weeks. I am going to try to keep everyone up to date on our trip. We are planning to stop and take our time. Does anyone have ideas what to see on the way down?

Old Decorations Part Two

There are so many memories washing about in my head. Putting them down "on paper" is not all that easy. Some come out bright and fresh, others faded and worn. All become more comfortable with time. The baked cookie ornaments on our tree were created for a special family Christmas that took place in Martinsburg, West Virginia in 1980. My aunt Hazel invited all of her family and her husband's family to spend the Holidays in a very large two story unheated garage. No one was allowed to bring any

Old Decorations Part One

Diane and I had a pleasant and mostly uneventful Christmas. I was busy trying to cure a large phone system suffering from hiccups for some days leading up to The Big Day. As a result I became a last-minute shopper (I have always believed I work best under pressure) and visited Macy's on Christmas Eve in the late morning. I intended to purchase just the RightSomething for my wife. Apparently many other procrastinating men had the same idea. After carefully shopping I found a Murano blown-glass h

Blogging

BLOG is a contraction of the words weB LOG. Wikipedia says a BLOG is "regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video." According to Wikipedia, "As of December 2007, blog search engine Technorati was tracking more than 112,000,000 blogs." So the idea here is to weave a continuous account of the events or activities of an individual, group or organization. Continuous is the tough part. We all have routine days when nothing seems extraordinary t

A Premonition?

Yesterday morning started out normal, almost. I woke up with the memory of a disturbing dream. I was walking Nickolas, our cocker spaniel, down a long faded green hall. It reminded me of an old high school corridor, or maybe an old office building. It had a polished dirty brown vinyl tile floor. There were exposed fluorescent lights, the long two-lamp kind that flicker and make a lot of ballast noise. At the end of the hall was a metal door with a reinforced glass window in the top half. The bot

The Thankmas Party

The Thankmas Party and the Christmas Bash Well, the weekend of November 20 was another short but nice trip. Diane, Nickolas and I, took off at about three o'clock on a Friday for North River Campground near the southern end of the Dismal Swamp in Currituck, North Carolina. We headed for our annual Good Sam's local chapter combination Christmas and Thanksgiving party; our Thankmas party. It is something we look forward to each year. It was supposed to have happened the weekend before at Camp Hat

Not the Typical Camp Meal

Louise and I were invited to dinner Friday night. The campground owners here at Sandpipers Resort where we have stayed each winter for nine years now invited 14 of us to dinner. It was seven couples who have assisted them in improving the resort in one way or another. Most of them were involved in the construction of a new shower house for the resort this past summer. Louise and I contributed other skills. Louise is writes the publicity materials for the resort and occasionally has articles publ

November 2009

Wednesday, December 02, 2009 We spent the first week of November touring Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the surrounding area. We stayed in a nice campground just off of Interstate 40 and north of the park. The national park is beautiful this time of the year with the leaves in color. At times we thought that the leaves that had fallen from the trees and were lining the forest floor added to the spectacular view. We also had some disappointments in the area. The commercialism of the ar

A lesson from cats

The day after Thanksgiving the moon and stars and busy schedules all aligned and we got to go camping again with our daughter. This was our first time to take her with us since right after her husband's death in July, so we were all looking forward to doing a whole lot of nothing except being a family. Our daughter has a 3-legged cat (long story there) that she loves dearly and did not want to leave behind, so we loaded her cat, along with our 3, into the motor home and headed out for the local

Our Favorite Places - Among the Giant Trees

The giant sequoias and redwoods of California are trees without parallel. To walk in a forest of such magnificent size is a privilege that few people in the world have. There is no way to read about the sequoias and redwoods and truly appreciate them. Our base camp was at Visalia, CA. We hiked numerous trails in Sequoia National Park. To see trees partially burned out and still standing tall and strong was amazing. Realizing that the branches of these trees are the size of the trunks of wh

Mortality, Chapter 2

There is no cure for birth or death, save to enjoy the interval. -- George Santanyana Jonah gave Sarah a sly look. He was about to give her a surprise and I hoped he was not going to let the cat all the way out of the bag. "He is not really my little brother. He is my father." I am sure I gave Jonah the "now look at what you have started" look. Sarah had this somewhat puzzled expression on her face. "You're joking aren't you?" she asked, or maybe it was a statement. "You would have to be a

A Work of Fiction: Mortality Chapter 1

As a kid I enjoyed serial stories in magazines. Works of fiction published one chapter at time. I read them and couldn't wait for the next installment. The next chapter. The number one thing that all good fiction writers say is common about writing is that writing should be about something that you know about. I know about communications, photography, history, RVing, and I know about myself and my family. I have also read that you should write about something that you love. I love all the abov

Our 2009 Summer

We are members of the Bounders of America, chapter Mid America Bounders. Our chapter meets monthly from May to October. This year we started in Bean Blossom, Indiana. So in May we headed to Bean Blossom and stayed at the Bill Monroe campground. It was only a short trip as we live in Indiana. But it rained and rained and, I might add, it rained more. Campground folks said we had 9 inches of rain in 2 days. Yes ,we got stuck. Coach-Net sent a tow truck to our rescue. While in Bean Blossom we

A Quick Weekend

This past weekend, Diane and I took the coach, the dog (can't leave home without him!) and the grandboys to Virginia Beach, Va. We stayed in the premier sites at the Holiday Travel Campground. The premier sites are a bit larger pull-thrus than the rest of the sites. The campground is about 40 minutes from our home. We left about 2:45 in the afternoon and arrived about 3:30 or so. We didn't do much the first night except grill some burgers while the boys explored the playground next to us. Later

Our Favorite Places - In Love With Deserts - Part 3

The previous two adventures occurred in our first year of full-timing in the motor home. By 2005 we had been in our new motor home for several years and were in our fifth winter in south Texas. We were getting a little stir crazy sitting in one place for four months, so in early March we decided to take a couple of weeks and head out west to Big Bend National Park. We would arrive during the peak season at Big Bend, spring break for colleges. Big Bend lies at a road to the end of the world! It i

A motel on wheels

One of the reasons I don't post any more often than I do is that I still work full-time. Getting away in our SeeYa is usually a real treat for us - one that happens all too seldom. Often, when we get away, it's like last week. I had to go to Hendersonville, N.C., for a convention. An enjoyable place (even with the rain) and an enjoyable "have to." Still, it was work, not pleasure, that dominated the entire trip. As usual my wife, Donna, and I took our motorhome and that became our motel on whee

October Travels

In October we covered most of three states: Kentucky, Indiana and Tennessee. We moved from Sparta Il., to Fort Knox, Ky., and stayed there for 10 days. During this time we toured a good part of Northern Kentucky, enjoying the sites and tastes of this area. There are a great number of adventures to take part in in this part of the country. We visited a bourbon distillery, wineries, Mammoth Cave National Park, and a number of Kentucky towns with their wonderful old homes and buildings. Many of the

A Different Perspective

Woof! The last two entries of this blog have been kind of serious and sad. Too much for me, to tell you the truth. I think we should go back to having some fun. Gramps' rules for owning a motor coach, especially number four, are just that. So, in order to lighten things back up, I have decided to hijack this blog and post one entry for myself. I don't think Gramps (I know him as Dad, but he really is my person) will mind all that much. This entry is about Motor Coaching, but from a different p

Our Favorite Places - In Love With Deserts - Part 2

Immediately after leaving Joshua Tree National Park we turned north to Death Valley. Our base of operations was just inside the Nevada state line at the Longstreet Casino in the Amargosa Valley. We arrived and parked at our very nice campsite, which was flooded in just an hour or so as the sprinklers came on at the golf course. We moved to a different site. It turned out that the Casino was celebrating their seventh anniversary and we would enjoy their celebration. They had scheduled David John

25 Years Ago, Part 2

I wrote the story about Wayne two or three years ago, maybe longer. I don't really remember when I wrote it to tell you the truth. I wrote it in response to a young lady who was a member of a Medal of Honor online gaming clan who posted a request for prayer on our clan forums. Her fiance had just been killed in a car accident and she was devastated. The story was originally addressed to her. Shannon was her name. For the most part that was the end of it until two days ago. That was when I got th

25 Years Ago, This Month

This blog entry doesn't have anything to do with the motor coaching lifestyle. Not directly, anyway. But the event does have a lot to do with how much I appreciate the friends that RVing has provided to my wife and I. Friends who have helped me get through the loss that I wrote about in The Course of Dreams. That story was about the second time I lost a close friend. This story is about the first. WAYNE In the summer of 1984 I moved my start-up small business out of my home into a small off
