Gallup, N.M.

We departed Cheyenne, Wyo., and moved to Loveland Colo., where we had a great time visiting the Rocky Mountain National Park. The aspen trees were starting to change colors, as you can see from the pictures I have attached. We spent time during the week touring both the Rockies and the prairie areas that are readily accessible from Loveland. One morning we were on a short day hike in the national park when we came upon a moose having his breakfast in a small lake. Hope you enjoy the picture of

We're Here in Goliad!

Finally we have made it to Goliad State Park, Goliad, Texas! We had quite the adventure coming down here and spent some pretty long days driving. Unfortunately, we had to leave Maine late, so there wasn’t a lot of time to travel down here, and it was 6 days of some pretty hard driving. We just found convenient RV parks to stay at overnight and some weren’t the greatest, to say the least, but we are finally here! It really helps when both of us can share the driving and we usually took 2-hou

One of Those Days

It all started as we prepared to depart from a one-night stay at a campground on Matagorda Bay in Texas. We couldn't resist a morning walk along the seawall in Palacios. When we returned I completed most of the outside work while Louise cooked breakfast. French toast was delicious and welcome on this cool coastal morning. We were just beginning to clean up the kitchen when Louise reached for the refrigerator door to put something away. She pulled the right-hand door on the two-door Norcold 1200

Why Don't He Write?

I know someone must be asking that question. I have asked it myself. I don't have a good answer. The bad answer is that there have been lots of distractions the last few weeks. The first distraction being caused by the need to look after a pup named Nickolas. Diane and I decided to subject him to some pretty extensive surgery that, thank the Lord, appears to be mostly successful. He is missing part of three ribs, some chest wall and a big malignant lump on his side. I have been amazed at how qu

Finally!

Well, due to circumstances beyond our control, we are still sitting in our yard in Maine waiting to migrate south with all the other birds. Finally, we have all of our roadblocks completed and are now free to travel. In the next few days we will start our travels south to Texas and are really excited. We are more than anxious to start our adventure! However, the time we have spent in our motorhome in our yard has had its pluses, as well. I finally was able to track down our mystery water leak

I Got a Round Tuit Today

This is a shout out to Brett Wolfe. We went in for maintenance at Cummins West in Avondale (Phoenix), AZ today. In a post several months ago, Brett had suggested replacing the belts on the engine and saving the usable used belts as back up in case a belt breaks. I asked the service representative to replace the used belts and save them for me. We were having the generator serviced at the same time. In the discussion the service rep asked if I wanted the belt on the generator (7.5 KW Onan) repla

Cheyenne, Wyo.

When we last wrote in this blog, we were en route to the FMCA Convention in Redmond, Ore. We attended the convention and had a good time, mainly because of the fellowship of our neighbors in the parking areas. The convention itself was disappointing. We expected there to be between 3,000 and 4,000 motorhomes attending the convention; instead there were only about 2,000. The seminars we wished to attend were held in some of the smaller rooms, which filled early, leaving a large number of attende

We Have Turkeys

We are currently in the gold hills of California near the town of San Andreas. The abundance of turkeys in this area is amazing! Today we were sitting outside beside the motorhome and I saw a turkey fly by behind Louise, along the main entrance to the park. It landed within view and then circled around the motorhome next to us and back up the road behind me. We went to look and there was a whole flock, more than 20 turkeys. They were just across the road from us. This flock wanders through the

Trees: Love 'em, Hate 'em

I've been up on the roof washing and cleaning for the last few days. The experience brings to the fore one of the conflicts that plagues me. At heart, I'm a big advocate of trees. They are essential to our existence. Trees are beautiful and useful. Trees are also a nuisance. On the good side, trees provide shade and keep our motor home cool. We're in San Andreas, California, and the forecast for the next two days are temperatures in the 100s, so I'll really appreciate the trees around us. I hav

The Rally

When I write a blog entry about a current trip in our coach, I tend to just write it in a matter of fact style, like the following: Well a lot has happened in the last week. Diane and I hosted an FMCA chapter rally at the Deer Creek RV Resort in Galax, Virginia during the last weekend of July. The campground Is located just across the golf course from our home at the Deer Creek Motorcoach resort. Some people call the golf course Derrick's Nine Holes, because I am the person who plays there the

August 8, 2010, Prosser, Washington

We are currently in Prosser, Washington, for the third time this year, this time visiting with a number of old friends who all came to join us for the weekend. We have done some of our usual wine tasting and buying over the course of the past few days. We have also enjoyed reestablishing our long-term friendships. Of course, there has been a lot of great food for sharing, as well as some fine wines to drink. I think when we posted our last entry we were in Great Falls, Mont. We left there and

Walmart Parking /Law Suit

If you appreciate being able to park overnight at Wal-Mart, let them know! A lawsuit has been filed in Utah by a Florida couple who opened thier RV door to an intruder and claims Wal-Mart should be held responsible for their security in their parking lot. We all are aware there are risks we must assume when we boondock. This lawsuit will affect any retailer who allows us to park in their lot. While the couple suffered an unfortunate situation, the retailer should not be held liable. Please join

Time to Leave is Nearly Here!

Finally! We are done with dealing with our "stuff." We sold, donated or just plain dumped everything we had in the house -- except for a few items we couldn’t part with, or items we have stored in the house that our son and family are going to rent. Whew! What a relief! It really is surprising how much stuff you really do not need to live happily ever after. Mostly what we stored are pictures taken over a lifetime that I just haven’t had the time to digitize. We have found out that living

The Last Inning: Giants and Phillies Part Two

It was an amazingly (is that a word?) fun thing to watch that ball zoom over the fence, but I, we, still have a game to win. The Last Inning (The Giants and the Phillies-Part Two) Once again, I have to corral all my players back into the dugout. They are still whooping and hollering and Chris is really pleased with himself. "Did you see that coach, did you see that? Blam! Right over the fence. Sorry I hit your van, coach." I hadn't noticed that the ball bounced off MY car! "Hey, that's ok

The Giants and the Phillies

One of the things that is on my Motor Coach Bucket List is to travel to as many Major League baseball parks as I can. I love the game of baseball. Like motor coaching, baseball has many metaphors for life. I have loved the game much, much longer than I have loved the rving lifestyle. I have been to a number of major league games. My first one was a weekday night game in late spring of 1989. It was the first home game of the Cincinnati Reds after the Pete Rose Scandal hit the news. There was an

Friends, Family and Fun

I've enjoyed reading a number of recent BLOGs from fellow travelers. It is good to see so many continuing stories. We each have different stories that illustrate the joy of traveling in a motor home. For our part, we have been "stuck" in one spot for two months now with just a short trip for a break. Stuck really isn't the proper word. We are at my daughter's home in Foristell, in eastern Missouri. We have attended my son's wedding, tended my mother after a fall in her home, returned to Texas fo

Great Falls, MT

We are a little late in composing our journals this month if for no other reason than we have been busy. We departed Prosser, Wash., and traveled to Lakewood Wash., for two weeks in our old hometown. During that stay we attended the high school graduation of our oldest granddaughter, Alyssa, and also took care of all of our medical and dental annual requirements. We also took some time to visit some of our old neighbors. Frank’s mom was with us the entire time and enjoyed visiting with our fri

We all had fun at Stone Mountain park Ga. We got there Thursday and stayed til Monday. The park was at capacity(60,00) at 5:30 on Sunday. If you have not been in years or never been it should be put on your todo list. Laser show and fireworks are awesome.

Shakedown Cruise and Finishing Touches

We had some preventive maintenance completed on our motorhome by Freightliner in Westbrook, Maine, and they did an outstanding job. Maintenance included replacing all the Cat engine belts, replacing the upper fuel filter, and changing the oil and all filters on the generator. We also had the ABS system checked out as the light came on and found out it was a loose sensor on the rear right. Just one more major PM to complete -- the Allison transmission needs to have its fluid and filters changed -

An Introduction to Big Blue and our Family

Big Blue is what we affectinately call our 42-foot Fleetwood Excursion, which my husband had to have because of the beautiful Pacific Blue coloring scheme. It doesn't hurt that we are also avid Penn State fans and that my husband comments that he "bleeds blue and white." Every fall you can find us up at the Bellefonte KOA (a wonderful place) for the whole football season. Never want to be any place else! The rest of the year, our address happens to be wherever we decide to park Big Blue for the

Enjoying the History Channel on This Holiday Weekend

We've enjoyed the History Channel the last few days as they do their annual replay of US history. As we watch the programs it occurs to me that our experience traveling in the motor home for the last 9 years has given us a much closer connection to so many of the places that are mentioned on these programs. Our understanding of any idea or concept is easier and more complete if we've had some personal experience with some part of the background or context of the idea. When it comes to history,

The Weather Takes One Last Swipe at Our New Home

There must be a message here. Perhaps we should not be setting up household but should continue to stay full time on the road! We have had no end of weather delays this spring while trying to get our manufactured home on site and ready for occupancy. Each of three stages of concrete pour had to be delayed, some several times, due to heavy rain. Once we had concrete we had to wait several weeks for the ground to dry enough to bring in the manufactured home. Construction of an addition also h

Part II - Getting Closer to Departure

Getting all our worldly stuff sorted out -- what to take, to leave, to give away, to sell, or to just trash -- is not an easy task. But that is only part of the battle. Where to store everything is the second part of the stuff battle, but we found that was easier than the first part and we are just about finished. Hooray! Now there are only tons of other things to get accomplished before the big day to shove off to see this Great Country of ours! Getting all of our bills and banking fixed so it
