TimeTraveler Report post Posted June 10, 2018 Another story on the net about a woman who got bit by a tick and is paralyzed from it recently. Many of the campgrounds we prefer are near woods, lakes, and fields. We live in the woods at home and field. We put out cat food at home for a cat that has adopted us. The Opossums get to it first most of the time at night. They always rattle the stainless bow. We trapped and carried off two but won't any more. They eat ticks, up to 90%of the ticks in their area. They also eat those little scorpions, and roaches and other creepy crawlies that come out of the woods. They leave their little long droppings around the garage patio area every night. They don't bother anything, except, they got two chickens before we fixed the pen. So leave a bit of food for them...but wash that bowl every day and of course if you have a barn and food you don't want them around it, as some of them can make the livestock sick. Anything that will help reduce the tick population and cost nothing is welcome, including all the crows, and tiny rough earth snakes. And at the campground don't be alarmed by them. When I go fishing I wear old fatigues with tops in my boots and sometimes a bit of bug spray.
hermanmullins Report post Posted June 11, 2018 TT, I have found that if I am in tall grass or the woods one thing that will wart off Chiggers and Ticks is Sulfur. I keep a sock with Sulfur in it in a zip lock bag. when needed I just dust my shoe, ankles and trouser with it. Works for me, haven't had a Tick or Chiggers in a very long time. manholt Report post Posted June 11, 2018 I got one chigger bite this year...last year, it was more bites on me, than me!
wildebill308 Report post Posted June 12, 2018 Carl, use a good repellant or like Herman said use some sulphur or you could couple small Opossums in your pockets. Bill
manholt Report post Posted June 12, 2018 Linda told me to dust, so I did...after that one bite!
wayne77590 Report post Posted June 12, 2018 Earlene asked me to vacuum once. When she saw me pulling on the cord to start it she told me to stop. I don't have to vacuum anymore. We worry about the pet, Miya The Dog. When we start our summer trip I use FrontLine as an added supplement to her oral medicines. So far so good.
manholt Report post Posted June 12, 2018 Wayne, we do the same to our two! But, still do visual inspection!!!
kaypsmith Report post Posted June 12, 2018 Garlic concentrate is also a great tick and mosquito repellent, especially if you like the smell.
jleamont Report post Posted June 12, 2018 I was going to give this a try; Tick Repellent. A tick repellent can be made for both animals and humans using tea tree oil as an active ingredient. Start with a 2:1 mixture of your favorite base oil, such as almond or jojoaba, and water. Combine this into a spray bottle with 2 oz. of tea tree oil. kaypsmith Report post Posted June 12, 2018 Joe that's good to know, the garlic concentrate is mixed with water, then sprayed in a given area to eradicate the ticks and mosquitos in that area. I will try your remedy while working under the bus, I am in the process of replacing the drive axel air bags, fun, fun, fun.
hermanmullins Report post Posted June 12, 2018 Kay, I know you aware of it but Jacks for Safety. Would hate to see a picture of your feet coming out from under the Bus. Herman

UGH . I think I have a shock or two up front in need of replacing, DW said next year and front air bags . I figured the Tea oil would smell better, watch you might have bees chasing you now . Garlic will keep Sue inside also while you are out side working, that's great unless she is handing you tools
obedb Report post Posted June 12, 2018 A Lyme Disease Specialist and MD that I used recommended Repel as a deterrent to ticks. It is only to be used on clothing and will last up to two weeks on boots, and clothing. Treat skin with the milder repellents. REPEL( Blue Cap) is available at Walmart. We live in the woods therefore I use it regularly.
obedb Report post Posted June 12, 2018 Oh! Meant to respond to the Opossum comments. We have them here. They sometimes squabble with raccoons over outside cat food. Did not know they help control ticks. I am now glad that they are here.
manholt Report post Posted June 13, 2018 I would rather have a family of Opossum, than Coons any day! Oil & water, don't mix...Garlic extract and water does. Don't use it around DW, unless she does, or you'll sleep alone (probably outside)!!!
jleamont Report post Posted June 13, 2018 So is an O'possum an Irish lad. This was the first time I had ever heard of a Possum with a O in front of it. Good thing for Google...
