From the Northwest I enjoy US95 in Oregon and Nevada as a way to "get south" on my way to Phoenix , but I-84 can be a handful in winter from Hermiston OR to Payette Idaho. Not always good for a motorhome. I carried chains ( law in Washington) in my 18 wheeler. From Spokane in January in a motorhome, I would head south on 395 to the Tri-Cities, cross the Snake into Oregon, head west on I-84 , head south on I-205 around Portland, to join I-5. As has been mentioned, there are some potential trouble spots in both Oregon and California. Pay attention to the weather. I would stay away from the LA area, but that is my preference. In California, I leave I-5 at exit 278, head east on CA 46 to south on CA 99. In Bakersfield take CA 58 to Barstow, joining I-15 at the end. North on 15 about 4 or 5 miles, head east I-40 to Needles. Head south on US-95 to I-10 in the Blythe area. Of course east to Phoenix. Following my directions will keep you well away from the traffic and congestion often happening in the LA area and following I-10 east through town after town. You will also miss the Grapevine on I-5 that can get very messy in the winter. US 95 from Payette Idaho south will take a traveler all of the way to I-10 on the way to Phoenix. Been there, done that, in the winter even.

Quick Overnnight Stops: I-40 OKC To Nashville
obedb replied to wesgiv's question in Destinations/Attractions
Don't know Loretta Lynn? You don't know Country?. My old brain reminds that a truckstop is between her and the interstate. -
I have a 3/4" torque wrench from my trucking days. Expensive but it was a business write off. Now it serves me well as the owner of an old class A. Maybe eBay for a used one or good buy on new?

Could not log on this afternoon and evening for several hours. Could log onto any other website I chose. Message was too many redirects. It seems to me that the FMCA website is not rocket science at it's best. I have more trouble here than anywhere else logging onto a site. Did hard resets ( iPad ). Cold restarts. To no avail. I belong to FMCA for one benefit. The ability to exchange helpful ideas and chat with participating members. The magazine is marginal compared to years ago FMCA 105607. Been there. I need no other benefits. Just the website. Am I asking for too much? A website that is dependable?

Gorm50 lives in Michigan. Will winterize ours this week. I add Diesel Kleen every time I fuel. I believe in the stuff. For winter around here Howes is a favorite. Available at Walmart and all truckstops. I had first hand experience with the additive on a very cold morning after the release of Ultra Low Sulphur Fuel. Two tanker drivers that parked overnight at the same farm I rented space to park, had quite the experience. They bought their fuel at the rack in Harrisburg that they hauled from. No additives at all but very cheap for them to use. My truck started that morning, but ran very rough. I noticed the owner of the shop I used parked next to the two tankers. He offered me a look. Both rigs looked like they had paraffin in their tanks. The tractors had to be hauled inside a building with heat because both fuel systems were a mess. I checked mine (saddle tanks) and I could see wax crystals forming in my tanks. Was offered a large bottle of Howes that I split between the two tanks, idled for about half an hour, and the rough running stopped. Diesels stop running long before the fuel gels. Wax crystals forming in tanks quickly plug up filters.

#1 used to a kerosene equivalent widely available in bitter winter states. ND as an example. Very low cloud point. Lower fuel mileage. Probably no Bio ( just a guess). Should be good way to winterize

Our Phaeton '03 is a mess to drive after dark also. So, I just don't anymore. Did some of my best distance work after dark back in the day. Oh well!

Have noticed adds from attorneys in the classifieds of either FMCA magazine or Motorhome magazine.

Am I missing something or am I the only one that read the last paragraph of Old Beavers original post?

If the hose snakes up out of sight wouldn't it be better to measure from the compressor forward and mount it in a different fashion than factory? Just a thought. Sympathize with you on crawling around on gravel. Ours is stored 8 miles away and all they offer is gravel. I run all tires onto blocks of wood for storage, and use pegboard to slide around under the coach.

The DD 500 is a very new engine, engineered after Benz bought the Detroit name from maybe Penske? As Joe has pointed it is a new rascal. The Series 60 12.7 liter has been around since the late 80's. Very reliable and just got better and better. Had a Pac Brake on my last engine after the Jacobs patents finally ran out. Awesome braking power. If I was shopping for a used Prevost or Bluebird I would only buy a Series 60. The ads show that they are widely available. Joe Leamont knows a lot about the newer DD engines. His employer uses them. Won't divulge the name, but they are well respected company.

How Do You Know You Are Clear To Pull In After Passing?
obedb replied to kaelalynn's topic in Type A motorhomes
Never really thought about it. After all of these years it is instinctive. I have never liked to come quickly back in front of a vehicle that I passed except on two lane roads and even then, only when necessary. When you do that, you have forced the rig that you just passed into tailgating. On interstates there are knuckle heads that make you want to get on the brakes because they came back in too quickly. As Herman has noted, the rear view camera is a big help and I use it regularly now. 18 wheelers don't have them. But never forget your side mirrors. They do not work any where near as well as mirrors on a big truck, but give them a look anyway. -

Had a Series 60 Detroit in my last truck. Knew several owner operators that also owned them. Not a complaint one.

Joe/ the product you mentioned in last post/ how is it used? Clean contacts on male/female connections and spray the plug after hooking it back up? If so, the stuff should be used in RV assembly!

Have towed our 2012 Forester 4down for three seasons. Tires are wearing perfectly. Drives as well as our previous 6 Subies. No major wear and tear I guess.

Our first coach had a Ford C6. Had a rep for being a tough one to kill. Had a fitting come loose on the line going to the cooler and suddenly no go. The fitting was easy to get to and tighten, but did not have any spare fluid. A Kansas Deputy Sheriff happened by, called his dispatcher on the radio, found a source for fluid on a Friday night 30 miles away, hauled me over there in his cruiser for the fluid, and then took me back to the RV. I like people from Kansas?. Filled the tranny up and away we went. As Bill mentioned maybe it could just be low. Good luck. Let us know how you make out.

Tag Axle and Ride Comfort on Different Motorhome Lengths
obedb replied to manholt's topic in Type A motorhomes
Talked with the owner of a tag equipped Newmar Dutch Star 40' last fall in Limon CO. He was very happy with it. Brand new and he and his wife were in their late 70's. Loads of RVing experience also. -
What transmission do you have?

Really sharp. What did that cost? Just kidding. Gorgeous!

My goodness. Is this the Tiffin RV Site? I gave up on them some time back when it took 52 posts to settle some fellow blowing a steer tire and saying that it was probably his fault. I think that poor dealer service could be at fault. They are glad to sell them, but don't want to work on them?? Everybody head to Red Bay.

Could it be build up from new filters finally showing up in your system? A guess. Don't use them.

If I am lyin/ I am dying. Run my tires a little above 110 and have not had to add any air to keep them there for over a year. Check them daily. Don't run in the winter. Stems are whatever the dealer put on 2 1/2 years ago. Michelin XZEs mounted by a well known truck tire dealer. Centramatic balancers. Maybe it is the Equal, although a very popular item with truckers in my area. Good luck.

Our EMS-PT50C showed a code indicating the surge suppressor part of the unit needed to replaced. The unit is also a circuit analyzer. Emailed their support site, and was given an address to send the unit to very quickly. UPS ground last Thursday afternoon. Received a replacement unit this AM by Fedex. Shows as a refurbished unit, but it looks too good and there are some apparent changes to the face. I think that it is a new unit replacing our damaged one ( thunderstorm ). Great service! Lists for over $400. Not a grumble from the company.

Didn't this happen not that long ago? Oh well?
