Feeling Overwhelmed With All You Have to Know About RVs
obedb replied to tricializ's topic in Type A motorhomes
Two enjoyable answers. One lengthy and as usual, excellent from Tbutler. The second one, though much shorter, says a lot about RVing. We do it because we love it! -
Lifetime member of OOIDA. They publish Landline. They have internet discussions on maintenance and equipment. Few were positive about super singles . The changeover is expensive, the trucking community at large has not embraced them, and they have many negatives. Being a retired trucker, I know who the really big companies are and very few have super singles. Save yourself many $$$. Stay with what you already have.

Feeling Overwhelmed With All You Have to Know About RVs
obedb replied to tricializ's topic in Type A motorhomes
We have a good time convincing each other about what we know about motorhomes. ? Tell us what you have and most will try to help you without confusing you. Things can get complicated sometimes , but not always. Go for it. Where do you enjoy traveling? What are you and your hubby driving? New tires coming up as you said, a working refrigerator , no water system problems, rooftop ac working, proper annual maintenance, no things that seem unusual as you ride down the road. The Wizards of smart will offer simple suggestions. It is still fun to RV.? -
CAT 330, exhaust brake, love mountains, Monarch Pass Colorado11312 ' above, a favorite of ours, absolutely beautiful and legendary, coolant temp stays normal on the pull, coolant temp cools when dropping off the other side with the exhaust brake on but low normal with rpm about 2200. I don't get it folks that is the way it is supposed to be. Jake brake the same results . Now if you have a CAT Brake Saver the oil temp will rise on a descent. Anybody have one? I doubt it. Not on a motorhome. They are expensive.

Every time this topic comes up on any RV website, the guys that are afraid of US550 just have to have their way and the RVer's that have done the trip are completely irresponsible. That oughta stir the negatives up???.

The trip from Durango to Ouray is easier. The drop offs that are most breath taking and without guard rails occur when approaching Ouray, but they are on the south bound side. I made the trip several times in our 34 footer. Two years ago I made the southbound trip in our 40' towing a Subaru Forester. Little more work? with the increased length , but things went well. There are drop offs NB side before you get to Silverton , but the road is wider there. Last fall US 550 was undergoing some repair work on stretch between Silverton and Ouray so I decided on 145. Pretty ride , but I like 550 better. Spend a few hours in Silverton if you can.

It is a beautiful place to vacation in the NE. We had pretty much given up on this part of the country until we discovered Alexandria Bay when we rented a cabin in the early 80's. Goose Bay I think. We were there three times with our 34' footer, and enjoyed all. We stayed at state parks with water and electric and the bigger park west of 81 had some full hooks . They do have rules but my memory says that a 39 footer would probably fit if they let you in. You will need written proof of Rabies Vaccinations for your dogs to get in. We vacationed in September. No kids. Not as crowded.

Montana is the 4th largest state geographically. First three are Alaska, Texas, and California. It is the 48th least dense in population . Alaska is 50th and Wyoming is 49th. Beautiful to look at from the inside of an 18 wheeler's windshield and having traveled many times to and fro, I don't remember a rush hour, but If you have a short time for your vacation, I would buy tires before you leave. Second choice would be to locate the tires that will serve your needs, call the dealer to order them and offer a deposit so they will be there when you arrive. We have about 470,000 people in our county (910 square miles) so buying tires is easy unless you insist on XRVs. Please do not think that I was poking fun at Montana.

So what will it cost Angie and Rick to repair their Beaver and where can it be done?
-
You called Beaver? What do I know? Thought they were long gone? Replacing large windshields on some RVs can be easy. Others I think not. With the apparently less than rigid front end of your coach, maybe it takes someone that really knows the process to install one or both sides. A tech that is more knowledgeable than average? I do feel your pain. Had the driver's side on our 2003 Phaeton replaced and I shelled out around $1200. I paid it. Not State Farm. Recently had a total loss when a tree fell on our Toad. Don't think that I will file a small claim any time soon. Tom Butler had a good idea for the short run. Hook a compressor up to the system if you have power. In my case, it would be in the compartment below the driver's side in front of the steer tire. It would be a time bomb though. You would always wonder, unless you found the installer that knows what to do. You bought a very well thought of coach and you are thinking about selling it. Bummer! Make sure that it is not the glass installers fault before you take the hit. Talk to others in the area or further away that might solve your problem. Good luck to you!

Montana has only one US Congressman and no tire stores? !!! If you are coming from the east look for a store in Billings// Montana's largest city at a little over 104,000. Think about it. Montana is a very large state geographically. Buy before you leave if you can.

I am about 90 busy miles from you. If closer I would volunteer. The dealer should help you.

Makes me happy that my steering wheel is a dumb one. Kinda like me?.

Mtroise46/ A suggestion. Find a copy of the study guide for a class B commercial license. It is not difficult to info to absorb. Rent a truck under 26,000 lbs for a few hours to practice. Preferably with air brakes. When you are comfortable with everything go for the exam by yourself when you can schedule with Penndot? As long as you are under 26,000 lbs you don't need anything special to drive it. You can go by yourself. I know people that drive straight trucks with air brakes that keep the truck licensed for under 26,000 lbs just to avoid the test ( because they are lazy ). If Joe can help you I am sure that he will. My MSN email address is on my profile. Remember you are dealing with Penndot. Oddly, the folks at Penndot Harrisburg (the home office) are very nice. Never had a problem with big truck registrations or auto issues.

US160 from South Fork to Wolf creek pass is certainly not four lane until you get closer to the pass. South Fork is 8209 ft elevation. The pass is 10,857 feet. Stop at the top and read the info on the Forest Service Display. The descent is steeper and somewhat scary to flat landers. It does wind some but when you have a clear view of the valley on a clear day it is striking. When the Aspen color, usually in late September or into October depending on temps it is gorgeous, but you will miss that based on the date you have described. The approach to Wolf Creek from South Fork is curvy and narrow at times until you get closer to the top/ then things open up. The descent is trickier because you drop over 3500 to the valley on your way to Pagosa Springs and it winds more on the way down. Wolf Creek Run ($$) sets right along the highway (noisy) all concrete roads and sites. Looks gorgeous if it were further away from civilization. We prefer Pagosa Riverside Campground ( they have a website ) . Been using them for decades. Good Sam now and previously a KOA . Much quieter. Suggest reservations for a site right on the river. Good rates and they stay open into November.

From the standpoint of an iPad user, I hoped that the upgrade would make my tablet more functional. In my case, just a little bit and I do mean little! I own a Lenovo laptop and an HP desktop, but I almost never use them since buying the iPad. Based on Bill308's comments, I will leave them mothballed.

I have seen saddle tanks on 18 wheelers in the winter throwing almost a fog out when you remove the fuel caps for refueling. The tanks actually felt warm when you put your hand on the tank below the fuel level. The 3406 E Cat model was the most noticeable, but then motorhomes don't have saddle tanks?. Must be my old brain mystifying things. I had twin 150's. The injectors were cooled by the circulating fuel or so I was told. Maybe it was just a CAT thing?.

Teknor Apex is a brand name. Homedepot has Teknor products on their site. Why would a reputable company offer junk to the public? I am going to try a 25 footer. That seems to be all of the reach that I need. I will keep another old style 25 footer in the bay. Not leaving until early July heading west. Maybe I will try it around home. Will let everyone know my opinion.

Still more expensive than filling a container at a fuel island and adding it to the onboard def tank later. Plus you do both things automatically. Prevents the OH S****. I forgot the DEF at Walmart, Costco, etc. Landfills are full of plastic containers, and landfills are becoming eyesores. Nothing environmentally friendly about a DP getting an often exaggerated 8 or 9 miles per gallon. Some claim more, but when you head into a stiff head wind or into hilly or mountainous territory, I am sure those numbers change. Never confuse me with a tree hugger, but I do what I can. I love RVing . My fuel mileage with an 18 wheeler was a low at 5 but usually between 6 or short of 7. But I often grossed 80,000 lbs. Had permits to legally gross 90,000 lbs hauling ocean containers in PA and MD. It was freight/ not oak cabinets and leather seats. I would reuse containers for DEF if I had a newer RV.

When you run anything diesel powered out of fuel, you will know what not to do in the future?.

This time of the year double back from Arco on routes 22/33 and take 22 when it splits off and heads to route 28 north to Salmon Idaho and rejoin US93 north to Missoula. All truck routes. You will be fine unless there is a spring snow storm. Can happen up there. Check weather before you go to be sure. I have not run Arco to Salmon on US93. Have run North from the Rexburg area on route 28 to US 93 and on to Missoula. Maybe 300 or so miles going that way from Arco. If you are only comfortable on Interstate Highways, head to Rexburg and north on I-15 to I-90 then on to Missoula. Another 40 or 50 miles or so. Maybe a bit more. This time of the year it is still all about the weather in that area.
