Who, What, When, Where or Just Lets Talk

Hear is something interesting.  A new way to look at and buy the newest RV's with out being mobbed at one of the "supper shows". This is aimed at  serious buyers only. Some of the RV's this will be the first chance to see the new model.

With all the stories over a lot of forums about folks buying new- and the resultant extended stay for warranty repairs at the dealer- Why would anyone buy new?

I am just thankful that there are people out there who do buy new or I wouldn't have one.

What kind of surprised me was how many buy new every 3-4 years.

I also never knew how messed up the warranty process is. You have to ask (to pick a make) Newmar for permission to troubleshoot a problem. Then if you find something bad (say a water pump) you have to order it from Newmar, who will order it from the maker. It is shipped to Newmar then to the dealer.

Brett Davis is working to improve the process. He has gotten it where they can stock some common items and Got Newmar to have a person qualified to make decisions at each dealership to speed up the process.

I took my time and pulled out my basement heat pump. That involved buying a new hydraulic lift table from Harbor Freight ($299) to support the unit and move it some for better working access.  Hired a mobile RV tech to help me pull it and do the heavy work.

Then I replaced the PC board and compressor relays and all 6 capacitors. Removed the indoor fan and outdoor fan, oiled the motor bushings, then checked for  wear/play and oiled the pillow-block bushing. Put everything back together and IDFM would not run, just hummed, that turned out to be my fault, mis-wired a cap.

Started it up successfully yesterday, and it runs better than I've ever noticed, even pull 2A less after running for 30 minutes than it did before I did the work. Total expense was near $1,000,($600 to RV tech) but if it lasts another 23 years I'll not be around to know. FWIW, a new replacement RVP 6515 heat pump costs $4,500- $5,000 today.

Best part_ I still don't have to listen to noisy roof-top units, I can't hear the basement unit running unless nothing else is running, and that only in the bedroom.

Ray, does your cool air come from ceiling ducts or floor registers?

Ceiling ductwork. It is an RVP (ColemanMach) 24,000btu basement unit. Inside, the only sound was chilled air exiting the ceiling ductwork and my genset running.  RVP now makes and sells a universal unit to fit where their old 5 models were used, the universal unit is a 46515 model. Then if needed they sell the adaptive ducting to match the coach OEM ductwork.

I had a basement air in my 2008. Ran it for 9 years without a problem.  Good system in my opinion, and quiet.

AC  had a rally at The Ridge in May.  Very nice park, but at $75 a bit steep, plus when coming south off I 40 you have to go through town.

66 down from I-40 is a good road most is 6 lane. I didn't find it a problem.

With the  Customer Appreciation Rally as with a AIM rally your site is included in the cost of the event. It is $595.00 for the  Customer Appreciation Rally.

I checked the Ridge reservations website last night, price was $108/night for pull-thru.

Yes many places have discounts for rallies. If you were going to the Customer Appreciation Rally it is included so you don't have to pay extra to stay there.

Yes I think prices have gone up at RV parks especially those in prime locations.

My pet peeve with CGs is that now some charge the full amount when you make the reservation.  Plus, if you want to be able to cancel, at any time, there is a  higher rate, other wise you can't cancel at all.  I made a reservation at Catherine's Landing, a very nice CG in Hot Springs, AR, for mid October.  My CC was charged the full amount, nearly $500, when I made the reservation.  I recently made a trip out west in the toad and made several motel/hotel reservations.  I could cancel all if I called 24 hours prior to the day of check in.

Catherine's Landing is a nice place we stayed there in April. Yes campgrounds besides being more expensive have added some new wrinkles. You better ask before you make a reservation. The latest one is a add on fee to make a reservation.

We stayed at CL July 6-9. Yes, a very nice campground. When we called to make reservations they said they had a back-in site. We needed to visit friends so we accepted. Then they said that the price would be $300+ for the 3 nights. When I asked why the price was so high for just 3 days it was because it was he 4th of July week.

When we arrived I asked if they had a pull through cancellation. The gave me a pull through with no additional cost. The campground was about 25% full with many many open spaces for our entire 3 day stay.

I think greed got the better of the corporation for charging as much as they did trying to make up for empty sites.

Would I go back there, yes, but definitely not during a holiday weekend or week.

I just read their reservation page, quote: "Best Available Rate If your vacation plans are firm, lock in the best-priced rate available when you book your reservation for your desired accommodation type within a specific timeframe. The entire stay must be prepaid with a credit card when the reservation is made and will be non-refundable.

Peace of Mind Rate Our Peace of Mind rate is fully refundable less a 10% cancellation fee except during holiday periods. You may make ONE date change or cancel the reservation but this change must be made by 3:00 pm CST, 72-hours prior to arrival. "
