  1. I'm surprised there hasn't been one post, that I've seen, regarding the Perry convention. Did anybody on the forum other than Herman go? Was the turn out bigger than ever since allowing towable? Report in attendees and let us know what we missed.
  2. We're leaving in the morning. Today being the Sabbath is going to be a day of rest, we've been going hard all week.
  3. Roland, Carl's idea of driving the motorhome through the park is another good option. You would not be able to drive the motorhome up to the Chisos Basin however due to length restrictions with all the switchbacks. I think they recommend max of 34ft on motorhomes. Most of the walkways are not paved and have steps because of the mountainous terrain. The Sotol Vista Overlook on the Ross Maxwell Scenic Dr gives one of the better panoramic views and is motorhome accessible and the sidewalks are paved. Casa Elena Canyon overlook is good also. There may be others and if you start at the ranger station at Panther Junction, they can tell you exactly the best places for you to go. Before you leave the area, drive out to the Terlingua Ghost Town and if you have a hankering to meet some of the locals, have a set on the porch and have a visit. It's truly an experience not to be missed. Be forewarned, I'm pretty sure some of these eccentrics are in the witness protection program. If you decide to come in the Jeep, the drive between Study Butte and Presidio, Hwy 170, is a nice scenic drive. The highway follows the Rio Grande River with several scenic overlooks. I don't recommend driving the motorhome unless necessary. We are under red flag wind warnings today so hang on to your bonnet.
  4. You definitely don't want to go to the state park. That's a 2.5 hour drive to the park headquarters from Study Butte. Something like 30-40 miles on a washboard rock road. Take the Ross Maxwell Scenic drive to Santa Elena Canyon, drive up to the Chisos Basin and if you have time drive to Bouquillas Canyon.
  5. Roland, I'm in Big Bend now. If you're planning to drive from Alpine to Big Bend to do a Jeep thing, you need to leave by 6am to have any time to spend in the park. From Alpine to Panther Junction (information center for BB) is a two hour plus drive. The speed limit in the park is 45 and if you plan on any off road type adventure the speed is only limited to your physical endurance. It took us 6 hours to do a 50 mile adventure yesterday. Remember, this is a huge park. We drove 159 miles today and 90% of that was in the park. My recommendation is to move to a cg in Study Butte and tour Big Bend from there. We always bring lunch as there is only one place to eat inside the park and it's pretty much inside the park kind of food. Bring lots and lots of water. My wife and I leave in the morning with a bottle each and take 4 more for each of us. We drink 5 bottles each during the day. If you get down near the river, the temperature will be 10-15 degrees warmer than up in the basin. Plan accordingly. Hat and sunscreen is a good idea. Save your empty water bottles and you can refill at Panther Junction should you run out. Welcome to the desert. Enjoy you time however you choose to use it.
  6. Take note Skyking, the new JL uses the same electric power steering that is giving the Cherokee owners problems.
  7. Herman, you can get a 2 wheel drive Wrangler and a right hand steering Wrangler. Mail carriers use both. I've towed either my 2005 or 2016 Wranglers, both automatics, for several hundred miles without ever starting either. I'm not sure where you heard that but you heard wrong.

    New Guy

Billy, welcome to Family RVing and the forum. Looking forward to your posts.
  9. Dang it,Carl. Haven't you learned anything in the last few years? When leadership wants something to come to pass, it will happen by whatever means necessary.
  10. Like Bill recommended, stay on the west side. I'm not much on KOA's but the one on the west side is really nice. You need to make reservations today, tomorrow at the latest. If your going in June, just make sure the road going to the sun is open from the winter snowfall. Get to the summit as early as possible because the rather small parking lot fills quickly.

  12. Thanks, Herman. Conversations that start with I've heard, I was told, I have a friend, blah blah blah always bother me.
  13. What is happening? How do you know you're not in a high traffic area?
  14. What do you mean the rear tires still spin? They have to roll or you would be dragging them. BTW....posting 5 times doesn't get you 5 times the answers.
  15. I know what you mean. Two days ago it was 90, a front came through yesterday and dropped the temperature to a bone chilling 66 degrees. Hopefully it will get up in the 70's today.
  16. My ISB did this twice and Freightliner was never able to find the problem because it never happened again. The two times it happened Freightliner had me pulling relays, fuses, etc and it would never shut down. I finally pulled the negative chassis battery cable to kill it.
  17. I understand, my wife is also like that.
  18. Just a reminder, just because you increase your tire rating doesn't mean anything if your axle rating is near capacity. It is like a person that replaced their 5000# hitch with a10000# hitch thinking that would solve their issue of hauling a 9000# trailer. That didn't work out so well for them.👎🙄
  19. I must have looked at one last August that made it off the assembly line with no inspections. Did you drive it? The rattles were so bad I only made it to the first turn before I could get back to the dealer. According to the salesman, the dash rattle you just learn to live with because they haven't been able to fix it on any previous units sold. He said it's a design problem that Fleetwood has not figured out how to repair. My wife commented how badly the fit and finish was so like said, this one was missed by the inspection department. I'm really surprised Fleetwood is using a 12400 front axle on a 41 foot unit.

Sorry to tell you but the build quality between a Phaeton and Discovery is huge.
  21. Wow....huge difference in an American Coach and the Discovery. How did you decide to narrow it down to those two?
  22. The 2017 Jeep Compass with manual tranny, Patriot, Wrangler along with the Cherokees are flat towable according to the FMCA Towable Guide. The 2017 Wrangler and Cherokee are both flat towable.
  23. Really need to be aware of any overhang, rear or otherwise.
  24. Shirler you need to Stop calling me Wayne.
