  1. Or, run two wires into the cabin, put a 30 amp switch and a 30 amp inline fuse and the other blade ends of the wires in the fuse box where the ignition fuse goes. Then, in the case of our 2006 Saturn Vue AWD, let the vehicle idle in neutral for 3 minutes, toggle the 30 amp switch to the off position, and you are ready to go for 600 miles (this is for our Vue--not sure what requirements are for your towed).
  2. Smart man David. Now do the research on the coach you are considering. Check all the pros and cons, the QC issues, the construction, and inquire of anyone else that already owns the model you are seeking.
  3. My opinion is:" If you are willing to let a stranger use your toothbrush, then go ahead and let someone rent your coach". Personally---NEVER--Not my toothbrush or my coach!!
  4. Not everyone has to be wearing a mask & carrying a gun to rob you!!
  5. After you get your new sensor/detector installed and turned on, check it for operation by pointing an UNLITE matchstick at the unit. Pull the "trigger", blow out the flame, and point. The butane fumes will trip the alarm if everything is done correctly. As an aside, I recommend that everyone perform a periodic check of their detector, just to be on the safe side.
  6. On the Foreforum Website I recommended that everyone, at least once a year, fill each of their holding tanks up until their monitor reads "FULL". Doing this could prevent an unpleasant surprise when the tank overflows and still read 1/2. Verify your sensors are working and no surprises will blindside you.
  7. I installed a new detector two years ago. It stated right on the package that it had a finite life of five years and would "chirp" when time was up. Possibly yours is the same way. I think ours also had a statement on the back repeating the information on the package. Try checking the front & back of your detector for any information. You might go online for additional info for your specific model also.
  8. Maybe that is the model "Dolphin" and they wanted to see if it could live up to its name.
  9. Can't seem to edit first post. We turn off water, set water heater on vacation mode, program furnace thermostat to 58 degrees, notify police to check on property, set three, sometimes four timers to activate LED lights at different intervals in different areas of the house, forward mail or hold until we know mailing address, pay to have driveway shoveled (no sidewalks), notify neighbors & friends when we are leaving and ask them to keep an eye on the house for any unusual activity. We do make a point of telling them we are NOT and will NOT be selling unless they see us & our coach in the driveway. Take enough of your meds along for your trip or let your physician know that you will need refill prescriptions done at Target or Sam's Club. Any chain that can verify your prescriptions. Last, and not least, make darn sure your homeowner's insurance policy is paid & up to date. Take pics of everything in every room. Take valuable papers & put them in a safe deposit box in a bank. A small safe at home is easy to carry off and break open at leisure.
  10. Mike, go to Fleet farm in Appleton (on Wisconsin Ave) and purchase a monitoring system. It is usually back where the thermostats are. It monitors the temperature in the house, along with a moisture lead that lays on the floor. If temp drops below your set point or senses water it will then call three different numbers that you input. Then that designated party can call you after checking the problem. (by the way, former Neenah resident--NHS class of 1960)
  11. Barkley, put a spot of Shoe Goo on each side, then tape the light cover in place until the Shoe Goo cures (about 4 hours). It cures clear and will not soften & let go in the heat like adhesives. Yet you can "roll" it off if you need to. It will stretch and come off cleanly under most circumstances. Available at Walmart for $4.99 in the shoe department.
  12. Our 1989 Foretravel had the original old Winegard antenna that would not accommodate the Wingman attachment. We were only getting seven (7) channels while the coach was sitting in our driveway and the antennae was not raised. I installed the JACK antennae head and, under same conditions (not raised), went up to 17 channels! BEST $49 I've spent in a long time. While camped at Boulder Lake Nat'l Park we were the only ones that could get the Green Bay Packer game in the deep woods.
  13. I asked my Michelin/Hankook/many other brands tire dealer if a rumour I heard last week about ALL trailer tires now being made in China and his reply was a disgusted: YES!
  14. Double check, heck, triple check the ground in the coach receiver plug and then the ground from the towed front plug to your light bar. I had similar problem when I made a light bar for our 1996 Geo Tracker. I ended up running a wire from the coach ground in that plug, to the ground wire on the light bar. PROBLEM SOLVED!!
  15. Maybe I can help. Our coach is a 1989 Foretravel 36' diesel pusher with the Oshkosh chassis. It has leaf springs all around, with shocks. Our engine is a Detroit Diesel turbo-charged 8.2 Liter V8 with a four speed Allison transmission. Does this sound like your chassis (except for the engine?). The brakes are hydraulic, with an electric assist pump mounted under the floorboard on the side of the master cylinder. It uses standard brake fluid (DOT 3) . Our chassis number is V-817-2. Oshkosh sold the frame design to Freightliner back in the 1990's so find your chassis number and you might get lucky with them. Otherwise, send me a PM and I will try to answer any relevant questions and hopefully my answers would apply to your chassis also. Just saw Brett's post. Go for it!! Take what he says as gospel. I know!!
  16. We purchased some pet screening (it is supposedly pet proof) some 1/4" shock/bungee cord (about 20') eight aluminum pitons, eight eyebolts, and made a stone guard that mounts on the back bumper of our coach and the front bumper of our Saturn Vue. We originally made it to fit on our '97 Geo Tracker but it fits the Vue as well. The shock cord slides into sewn tubes around the periphery of the screen and the pitons go on the corners and on the vehicles narrower points inboard of the corner pitons. This allows the cord to stretch and/or slide when going around corners. Not a nick or dent since we made it!! Sorry, no pictures. The coach is in storage 19 miles away and the owner is in Texas.
  17. Don't feel that you have been singled out, Ray. I went so far as to suggest a solution, on irv2, to a Newmar owner having an electrical problem. What I didn't know, in my ignorance, was that ordinary rules regarding electricity do not apply to Newmar coaches!! I received a PM from a Newmar club member pretty much cutting me a "new one" and telling me I didn't know s*** so because I am not a Newmar owner. Sure left a bad taste!! And I used to think all Newmar owners were such nice people.
  18. Huffypuff, sounds a lot like Wisconsin except 8 months of winter and 4 months of construction.
  19. We are planning our next winter trip south so I checked them out. Not very good reviews. Not much "bang for the buck" in my opinion. Charge by the foot? Ridiculous! No amenities, park on grass, rough roads. Definitely better places around.
  20. Another piece of luck: Drove from Zapata to Crane's Mill CG on Canyon Lake. Went to open the 18' patio awning (Zip Dee brand) and the pin on the front axle fell out just as I got the awning all the way out. It was a #10-32 bolt and came apart. I replaced it with one of the clip pins that are like those used on our tow bar.
  21. Actually had another VERY LUCKY moment. We were coming north thru the hills, heading towards Syracuse, Nebraska. Came around a curve after the top of a hill. As we got around the curve we saw a whole line of vehicles backed up in both directions. A semi had run off the road and rolled over in a ravine at the bottom of the hills. Wreckers with cables out, EMTs, cops, etc down there. I just managed to get our coach & towed stopped with about 2' clearance from the car in front of us. I looked in the rear view mirrors and saw a logging truck with a full load come barreling around the curve behind me. He hit the brakes, smoke billowing out from all the tires, and slid to a stop on my right side on the shoulder, almost with bumpers even!! We matched wiping our brows when we looked at each other.
  22. We were on our way home to Wisconsin from Zapata, TX. Going around Laredo at 45 MPH on the beltline we were coming up to a three way intersection when the lights changed to red. I stepped on the brakes---and NOTHING!!. Brake pedal went right to the floor!. There was no one stopped in the right turn lane so I downshifted the Allison transmission and took a right--at 45 MPH. I think the coach and the Geo Tracker went up on the left side wheels while going around the corner. Luckily no one was coming out from the side street so we were able to slow down enough to turn into the Academy Sporting Goods parking lot and coast to a stop. Crawled around under the coach and found the master cylinder rod off from the pedal!!
  23. A lot of sites are too short or too small, or rules restrict putting the tow dolly on the grass. So where to put the dolly becomes an issue.
