Most of the parks we have visited in the last year and a half have only been about half full. We are going to be in 2 more on our way to Indy and when I made the reservations 3 days ago both had between 100-200 spaces available. Should be able to find an exceptable site.

I have been using Tire Minder with replacable batteries in the transmitters. I will be beta testing the next generation transmitters when I leave Sturbridge Ma tomorrow. So far so good.

New Flat Tow Vehicle Needed
desertdeals69 replied to peterp31's topic in Toads-Towed Behind Motorhome
I would recomend getting a vehicle with a standard transmission. The less modifications you have to make the better off you are. Just look at the postings on this forum with all of the unhappy results from misinformation and products. I tow a 99 Silverado 1/2 ton with a 5 speed manual transmission for over 100,000 miles. -
It's true that they are not located in all of the places you want to go. However back in the 70's we traveled to all of the lower 48 states twice so chances are that going back to a state again today, we have been there or close to it. While not located in the "hot spots" we find any area has things to see and do. We spent 3 weeks in Jefferson Oh and are just finishing up 3 weeks in Sturbridge Ma. not far from Boston. As far as initial investment goes we went to a TT presentation some years ago and the buy in was in the $8,000 range. I went to ebay and bought it for $99 plus transfer fee of $750.

The annual fee is $585 for me. The initial cost is dependent on who you buy it from. I have the use of any park in Thousand Trails, Leisure Time Resorts, NACO, Outdoor World and Mid-Atlantic. Just under 90 parks. I can stay in any park for up to 3 weeks and then go to another for 3 weeks and so on. I can make reservations up to 90 days in advance. Up to 5 of family can do the same for a fee of $30/ year.

I have never stayed at a KOA because of cost. I prefer Thousand Trails where we can stay up to 3 weeks at a time and then go to another one, all with no daily costs. We do have an annual fee of $585 but thats the only expense. We are in our third week at Sturbridge Ma and going to Pa Sunday. Not all our campgrounds are where we like but with some planning we stay around 100 nights in the system per year.

Norcold Problems Starting On Propane
desertdeals69 replied to QuiGonJohn's topic in Systems and Appliances
You might verify that you have the correct lp pressure. It should be 11 inches of water column or about 1/4 lb. We usually test at the stove by taking one burner off and hooking a manometer or pressure gauge to it. -
Ford vs. Chevy Engine for Class A Motorhome
desertdeals69 replied to Ralph's topic in Type A motorhomes
I would consider a Cummins. I have a ISB which has more pulling power that most gas engines and an Allison 6 speed. It gets between 10 and 11 mpg towing a Silverado 1/2 ton going coast to coast. -
1978 Apollo 3300 RB w/Dodge 440 Engine Smokes And Smells
desertdeals69 replied to Apollo78's topic in Engines
I have worked on dozens of 440-3 back in the 70's. These engines run hot externally, giving off a lot of heat, about1250 degrees around the manifold. Make sure the exhaust system is not leaking. Exhaust manifold gaskets were subject to leakage, we had better luck with header type thick gaskets. The one modification we did to reduce doghouse temp was to install vents through the side at the rear upper rear corner of the wheel well. We used boat vents about 2 x 5 inches. It would reduce the temp dozens of degrees.- 5 replies

I use a service station type battery type filler for the water. It has a spring loaded spout which when inserted into the battery filler neck fills and then shuts of when at the correct level. You don't have to look into the battery. They are avaiable at auto part stores for about $10 to $15. I built a carrier in the battery compartment for it.

If its a private operation such a Road Ranger the card won't work. It still says on the sign Pilot.

If the connections in the ATS are aluminum and the wire is copper, Nyalox, not sure of the spelling, must be used because of the different metals. This may explain the heat buildup.

We always use the national campgrounds on the outer banks islands. No hook ups but rate is low. Wth a up to date motorhome one should be able to stay a few days without hookups. Been there a number of times over the last 35 years, as recent as last year.

What the problem was the clutch dog, which looks like a syncronizer ring gets slack in it after a few thousand miles and causes play in the driveline which clunks when you accelerate or decelerate. If you can live with that then thats fine. What happens is the road grime gets into the mechanism and causes wear. They may have found a way to seal the area. We had a number of driveshafts out of balance and had to have them rebalanced. Because the shaft is no longer 1 piece but separated with a bearing and any unbalance is amplified.

They must have improved.

We have installed a number of them some years ago in our business. For the most part worked OK but did cause some problems with adjustment of the cable and vibration and noise. Unless they have improved in the last 12 years or so I would be leery of recommending it. I have always maintained that the fewer things that have to be modified to make it towable, the better.

I've been testing a ScanGaugeD and it works very well. Also gives a lot of other data, MPG, MPH, Oil Pressure, engine temp, etc. A lot less expensive than a Road Relay from Cummins.

Where is this Lake George? The Thousand Trails group of campgrounds offer cabins or mobiles at most of their locations.

Good design but harder to access the engine door on a pusher. Thats why I designed the unit as described in my earlier post.

I think we've beat this subject to death. To say that you can't get 50 amps from a pedestal with a 30 amp and a 20 amp gfi is not correct, however if that's what you believe that's fine. For the rest of us we will continue to enjoy using 2 airs when needed.

I was at Colaws last month and they have lots of rv stuff. In the Elkhart area all but one have closed and that one has moved and looks more like a camping world than the salvage yard it use to be. There may be one or two others that I missed. Bontraggers is good.

A number of them are no longer in business.

I would love to but because of legal liability issues I can't. Something that is not very well known is that if you modify any manufactured product you become, in the eyes of the law, legally liable if a problem results in a court case. I was in the RV and marine repair business for over 50 years and that is what was preached at all of the service schools when changing anything on your own that was different than the way it was manufactured. If anyone would like to see it in operation let me know as we are headed towards the Boston area, Sturbridge to be exact.

I know a production cheater box won't work, thats why I had to design a different way of doing it. With a couple of changes it will work with a production coach because electricity is electricity. Its really pretty simple.
