huffypuff Report post Posted April 10, 2018 3 hours ago, FIVE said: 178th were the Box Cars if my ancient memory is correct. After a ground tour with the 25th ID, I went to flight school, Chinook transition and back to VN, where I spent a year with the 213th ASHC (Black Cats) in Phu Loi, Sep 70 to Sep 71. We had 16 CH 47C models....and one little OH 58. Yes you are correct about that 178th is the Box cars with the double reds dice sixes on the aft. We just got the super C models when I got there with the different being the engine. Those upgraded turned out the be a disastrous cause one to crash. Needless to say they were all grounded until we swapped them out for C model engines. I was suppose to be the next to be a crew on that helicopter that got destroyed. I ask to stay on the PE team after seeing that.
five Report post Posted April 10, 2018 When I got there we had half Super Cs and called the others C minuses. The Super Cs had the L11 engines that kept exploding...we lost one also, when the engine exploded into the aft pylon. After that, they pulled the L11s and made them all standard C models. That is because the L11 had T-Canes made out ceramic for fuel jets. The hole in the middle for fuel and holes around the out side using balancing air to keep the flame away fro the T-Canes. If the air was unbalanced it would case the flame to touch the T-Canes and burn the end right off and dump fuel into the combustion chamber. I have seen them spit N1 and N2 turbine blades out the back of the engine and spin compressor so fast it would stretch the blades and they would touch compress half liners. L13 was the first one that used metal jets but still depended on balancing air to keep the flame away from the jet... Wow what a flash back.... 67n2F VN 68-69 70-71 --- Retired 20 years 16 days but who was counting. Retired as Quality Control Supervisor 67W4F

Flew A-4 Skyhawk in the Reserve. BTW: I still have the "guarantee" given to me by my rigger, that I would get a full refund if my 'chute failed.
