Would You Let Your Teenager Drive Your Motorhome?

Carl, no way would I subject myself to that stress. DW has her class B CDL now and she doesn't want anything to do with the coach. -
Would You Let Your Teenager Drive Your Motorhome?

Depending on your Motorhome you might need a special license. Don't forget to check the laws. -
Great advice. Thank you

Ok, but what's different on the lift pump on the ISB vs the others. Supposedly they all share the same lift pump. Please enlighten us.

Backing Up The Coach With The Toad Attached

Obedb, you got lucky you could keep driving and circle back. -
What did they have for hookups (jetty park)? Their website is pretty poor on information.

The DD13 would be the same in those years, that engine has not been altered since its introduction with respect to the filter locations. large cap is the fuel filter, the small on toward the rear is the screen. The hand pump is between both.
-
Five, heads up you have that screen on your DD13. The filters in the photo above are from a 2015 DD13. Just in case you want to concur that on your own. The filter on the left is the factory fuel filter, the screen is right next to that (all are next to the cartridge oil filter) and the one labeled Detroit Diesel is a Davco, which I doubt you have but possible.

Bill, it is usually sold to fleets and the military. I was told there is a distributor in Salem NJ, but not given any contact info. I have a meeting with them on Tuesday, If I don't hear back from them I will ask at the meeting for a distributor list.

Diesel Motorhome MPG-- Honest Answers Please
jleamont replied to luckydog1949's topic in Type A motorhomes
Bill, is it the same HP and torque in the truck. Usually an ISB in a truck is not likely to be over 275hp and the torque is lower than the RV engine. I had read somewhere that the head gasket was thinner on the RV for more compression. -
Byron, Welcome to the FMCA Forum! Sorry I couldn't resist . I was unaware you posted something and didn't get a response.
-
I wonder what is down stream that they are trying to protect from debris, one way check valve, in-line mechanical regulator, that is only on the ISB and not the ISC or ISL?
-
Rich, is that a screen for large particles, like in the top center of the photo?

Diesel Motorhome MPG-- Honest Answers Please
jleamont replied to luckydog1949's topic in Type A motorhomes
Five, don't get any ideas, at 2300 yours will throw a fault code at 2600 worry, at 2750 duck . You shouldn't be able to reach that unless the Allison downs shifts during engine braking, if it does achieve that speed step on the brake pedal to get it under control. I am in the middle of a mess now at work with the same engine as you that the transmission over revved during engine braking . To make things worse I have 15 of them all doing the same. Watching the finger pointing is entertaining but aggravating. This will stir the pot...these tractor trailers are getting 7.4 MPG Aerodynamics and gearing do a lot -
Diesel Motorhome MPG-- Honest Answers Please

Carl, I agree, you wouldn't get into RV'ing of any sort to save money on fuel to travel. Its all about the journey, destination and comfort ultimately a way of life. I feel our coach is great on fuel, I have had it as low as 7.2 (I think was the lowest...its been a while) and as high as 10.05, depending on the wind, weight and terrain. I stopped clocking MPG this summer, I told my wife if I have to look at that we shouldn't have bought an RV, she agreed. My MPG went up compared to our last coach, when we stepped up to a DP I told her I was curious as to what it would do but as long as its the same or better I will take it. The only time I would consider rechecking MPG is if it seems to be noticeably worse i.e. something is wrong. I have also learned to drive it differently which seems to be an improvement. I use to jump in and press economy and step on the accelerator and go. Since I stopped doing that and started to watch my boost gauge, RPM's and now exhaust temp I find myself downshifting it and really has maximized its performance which has improved MPG's enough you can see it. -
Herman, I use this product (link below) after it fixed a problem we had at a trucking terminal where the fuel looked like Italian Wedding Soup . We added this and a bio clean from the same company and were shocked at the results. I have been testing it since May and I had a fleet of Volvos in south Jersey that were clogging filters every three weeks. Since this was being added daily our MPG went up .6 and the filters are now lasting three months. I bought a case for myself when I had picked up bad fuel at a Love's memorial day weekend, it cleared up my mess and the coach had a noticeable different in performance. I keep two bottles under the coach now and add it just before each fill up. https://diesel-mate.com/fuel-quality-assurance.html Its expensive but it does work.
-
Rich, there are additives that will attack the garbage in the new fuel, break it down and bring the Cetane back. With the Bio fuel the amount of time it sits is also a huge problem. While there is a minimum requirement of 45 at the pump, good luck finding any pump with more than 40, most that I have had tested are in the low 30's. I will NEVER put fuel in my coach again without an additive, lessons learned.....the hard way unfortunately .

I have considered buying another GPS, the one I have now sours me to the point of total frustration since its useless and I just cant bring myself to do it again. The Apps are great as long as you have cell service, which isn't often. I now plan our routes and google earth when I leave an interstate to see what lies ahead, not my preference but works.
-
From experience, use the apps on your phone. Some of the GPS devices out there like the Good Sam and Rand McNally are expensive wheel chocks, that's about all they are good for. Just don't want to see anyone waste their hard earned money on a GPS thinking its going to save the day.

Check on the website for the tunnel, it will have the restrictions listed. I know there is a maximum propane storage limit allowed. Most likely you are close or over that amount. I have never run the GSParkway in NJ before, if headed north I will run I-287 to 87 to 84 to avoid those ridiculous tolls and congestion. Plus it's a nice scenic ride. A favorite stop at Orange County Choppers is a must since it's at I-87 and I-84 anyway

Backing Up The Coach With The Toad Attached
jleamont replied to CarlAda's topic in Toads-Towed Behind Motorhome
Bill good point, but think about the person that has no toad brakes, now the bar is taking similar stress everytime you stop. -
Take a look at each wire closely, on our Monaco product they are labeled what circuit the belong to and I mean they spell It out on the actual wire, not codes or abbreviated.
-
bikeryder, the electrical connection in the photo, is it fully seated and making connection? From the photo it appears its partially unplugged.

Don and Carol, you might want to explore as you get father away from potential bad weather. If it were us I would drive straight to any state south of I-40 then start to explore, and that could be a bit cold there also. That late in November the weather is too unpredictable to chance in a motorhome. A few places that come to mind; Savannah Georgia, Tennessee, New Orleans, Destin FL (on the pan handle), St, Augustine FL. depending on what you are looking for i.e beach front, history, shopping etc.
