Another Toad. 2016 Grand Cherokee or 2016 F-150?
five replied to blakeloke's topic in Toads-Towed Behind Motorhome
You might want to check out the "Death Wobble" with Grand Cherokees. I just binged it and this is the first article that came up: http://www.allpar.com/SUVs/jeep/death-wobble.html -
We went to an RV show a number of years ago and one particular company had really good looking tires. I asked what he used and he said, "don't tell anybody because it is bad for your tires, but the stuff that makes 'em look the best is brake fluid."
-
Nope. Never heard anything really bad about any brand. Just get them from a reputable dealer and be sure they are not old. Also, don't forget to adjust and set your charger for AGMs.
-
A final clarification. Most AC coaches like mine have two inverter/chargers and two banks of four 6 v batteries each. They are wired totally separately with one inv/battery bank dedicated solely for the residential refer, the other inv/battery bank for all other 12 v requirements. My set up is only one inverter charger but eight 6 v batteries to run everything. I do not know why the original owner wanted eight batteries and only one inverter, but that's what I have. These residential refers draw so little power, four 6 v batteries would have been plenty. In fact, one of the guys in our club just went from four 6 v batteries to two 12 v batteries.

The bottom line is that if you are seriously concerned about annual costs (or any other costs) you are in the wrong hobby.

14 MPG is down hill with a tail wind.

Journalist Responds To Gerber's RV Death Spiral Series
five replied to RodgerS's topic in Buying an RV
Get out your calculator, Carl. 404,800 X 13% = 52,600, which represents the percentage of RVs that are MHs. The 87% represents all the other RVs. -
Journalist Responds To Gerber's RV Death Spiral Series

There is a short article on RV sales on page 43 of the August issue of the FMCA magazine, entitled "RV Shipments Continue Upward Trend." Briefly, it states 2016 will show an increase of 6% over 2015. That 6% equates to 396,400 units, with the forecast for 2017 at 404,800 units. This will be eight straight years of growth. MH units will be 50,900 and 52,500 for 2016 and 2017 respectively. Those numbers equal 13% of all sales for MHs...the best performance in a decade. -
We are on our second CRV, great toads. We abide by the 65 mph rule...don't tow much faster than 60 anyway. MPG is bad enough at 60, really heads south faster than that.

My ISL 400 in a previous coach ran right around 200.

AGMs are the way to go. They are literally put them in and forget about them.
-
As we read about quality issues from the numerous coach makers, I wonder if you go out and pay $1.2 m to $2m for a Prevost or a Newell if those owners have the same problems we do.
-
The link I saw said it was nearly 42'...with a 340 hp ISB. That's a small engine for that big a coach.
-
Not yet. There are two new ones, one in OR and one in Alvarado, TX. They also purchased some property out west, NV or W CA I think, for a new one.
-
Carl, have you called the AC tech line? They are usually up on all the weird stuff that happens to these beasts.
-
You are correct. The factory charges a fee, but it should be added on to a price that would be considerably less than if purchased from a dealer. That's how it should work...does it...who knows, I'm sure all factories are different.

Close Carl, it is REV.

Towing Package Design For 2009 Honda Civic
five replied to sundance44's topic in Toads-Towed Behind Motorhome
If you are a Honda guy, a 14 or earlier CRV is hard to beat, we are on our second. Honda, in their infinite wisdom, put the new trans in it, so model years 15 and later can't be towed four down . -
Same with Honda. They went from one of the most popular toads in the country to can't be towed four down with the '15 model and it's new transmission. I called and complained and sent them a snail mail letter...to which they sent me a number to call. I called, but I don't think the guy on the other end grasped what I was trying to tell him. It seems they are trying to squeeze out another mpg to meet the gubmint's requirements.

This thread reminds me of the definition of a motor home owner: "A person or persons with a $500k MH looking for a free place to camp."

Some general comments, Joe: - Why not leave the 295s on the front? My last coach had a 14.6k front axle and plenty of reserve carrying capacity with 295s. However, as you noted, they are hard to find. We had a RF blowout last year and sat on I 55, south of Chicago for five and a half hours while GS Road Service found one. But at 15 months old, they are virtually new. This coach has a 17k front axle and 315s. - The feds just recently gave approval for increasing the rear axle GW above 20k...are you sure yours is 23k? I like to do things the easy way, so if you want to change the rears, I'd put on 295s. Then you are back to all OEM, no adustments for speed, mpg, trans shift points, etc. As noted above, the biggest disadvantage is finding one if you have a failure.

greenbarn1, you don't mention the year/make/model of your coach...that would help with our input. So this might not pertain...anyway...our last coach was a new AC Allegiance. We had trouble with the forward thermistor, no matter what we did it would not work correctly. An AC dealer finally solved the problem. All ACs are wired for all possible options and appliances. Our Allegiance had two ACs, but was wired for three. It seems one of their highly skilled workers wired the #1 thermistor to the non existent #2 (mid) AC unit.

The problem with being a ''walk in" for maintenance work is that the REV center in Decatur is very backed up. They have an order for service that is very specific. Don't know how they would change that without angering the folks with appointments.
