Verizion Pulls Out of FMCA Agreement !!!
BillAdams replied to Boundertom's topic in General Discussion
Since FMCA never has and never will check if someone applying for membership actually owns the RV they claim to own, this thing is about to go ballistic. The likelihood is that Verizon will pull the plug when 5000 folks a month (assuming that's the limit) sign up month after month after month. FMCA should have been able to see the future with this plan but since it appears not to have been given any consideration the only 2 choices now are to offer this plan to members who pre-date the announcement or require a potential member to provide a copy of vehicle registration before being allowed to join this close knit family.- 100 replies

AT&T Unlimited Internet Service
BillAdams replied to BillAdams's topic in RV Internet to Go/Staying in Touch
I could be mistaken but I think he plans to use 2 Mobley's with 2 lines of AT&T service (44GB for $40) plus the Verizon MiFi on the FMCA plan for an additional 25GB for $44. -
Verizion Pulls Out of FMCA Agreement !!!
BillAdams replied to Boundertom's topic in General Discussion
I can assure you that they did not check. How could they? Run down DMV records? That's not going to happen. I have been a member since 1994 and no one responsible for membership at FMCA actually knows whether I own an RV or not (or care).- 100 replies

Did FMCA check to see if YOU actually had an RV? You write anything you like in the blank boxes and you are a member. Everyone in the Country is about to become a brand new RVer!- 100 replies

My Surge Guard has a 2 minute and 16 second delay (136 seconds but maybe it's 137!) Something else is wrong somewhere if you plug your coach into a power power without the autoformer and the breaker trips before your Surge Guard comes to life. Your coach would be drawing nearly ZERO amps. I would suspect a short/break in the power cord, faulty Surge Guard or something of that nature. If yours is like mine, you have 2 "line lights" that should light when you plug in and if everything is OK you will have a 3rd blinking light. This indicates good working power on line 1 and line 2 and the blinking will stop in 137 seconds when you hear a loud "thunk" allowing power to pass. In case you are interested, the delay is there to protect A/C units in the case of a momentary loss of power. This keeps the A/C compressors from kicking back in before they have time to relieve the pressure and have a normal start.

Verizion Pulls Out of FMCA Agreement !!!
BillAdams replied to Boundertom's topic in General Discussion
I suspect the FMCA just wants more members so whether they own a motorhome (or any RV of any kind for that matter) is not really their top concern.- 100 replies

Verizion Pulls Out of FMCA Agreement !!!
BillAdams replied to Boundertom's topic in General Discussion
I rarely defend FMCA (or anyone for that matter) but let's get real here. FMCA did what was meant to be a test market with an offer send to 5000 FMCA members (should have been me as well but then I already mentioned I don't often defend FMCA) to test the waters. Just like the posts awhile back that "leaked" info about this plan, someone in the test group sent the info to Technomadia and they published it for all the World to see. This was never the plan and FMCA screwed up by not ensuring that the folks who signed up also knew that this was a test and the information should not be disseminated to the public. Having failed to do so, someone let the cat out of the bag and things went down hill FAST from there. The future of this plan still remains in jeopardy as everyone who wants this kind of a plan is going to join FMCA (a good thing) whether they own an RV or not (a bad thing). Just look back at the OmniLynx plan and you will be able to see how a plan designed to serve a specific group that expands to a plan that serves anyone, anywhere for any reason is bound to fail. It there were any other rules, Verizon would simply offer this exact plan to all of their customers.- 100 replies

Applying Dinghy/Towed Vehicle Brakes
BillAdams replied to grnordstrom's topic in Toads-Towed Behind Motorhome
Yes. The best (in my opinion) is the M&G braking system but it's not available for all toads. The next best (same opinion) is the Air Force 1 system. If you want something that you have to put in and take out every time you tow or stop towing then there are a number of units available that plug into your cigarette lighter and use centrifugal force to determine how much braking is necessary. -
FMCA & Verizon Offers Specifics?
BillAdams replied to smitty777's topic in RV Internet to Go/Staying in Touch
Don't be disappointed. Just call in and get signed up for the service. So you go a couple of extra days without the device. I don't think this is going to kill anyone. If you prefer you can pout that someone got the service before you did but the latest posters are reporting sign ups today will be shipped within a week. If you don't want to wait a week you can pay more for less service and just spend the rest of your life grumbling. -
Allowing Towables Vote At Indianapolis In July
BillAdams replied to jeff753's topic in FMCA Feedback
While I am not a fan of siding with FMCA, a Class A, Class B or Class C RV has always been considered a self-contained motor homes in the FMCA family. I have never seen any discrimination between these various models (not classes as the title might imply) on the FMCA platform. However, there is such a huge gap between the motorized RV and the trailered RV that it is hard to imagine how you integrate the 2 without becoming "just another Good Sam" group. There are separate groups that are Class A only but that's a bunch of snobs that very few people (who don't own a class A) want to be dissociated with, -
Allowing Towables Vote At Indianapolis In July
BillAdams replied to jeff753's topic in FMCA Feedback
I don't know. With this new Verizon wireless plan I might have to stay even if half of the organization is worthless to me. This might be the FMCA saving grace as a whole bunch of RVers are feed up with campground wifi and sketchy service from AT&T and Sprint. Hopefully, FMCA will get a nice taste from each subscriber plus the yearly dues required to maintain the plan. Good job guys. I just cancelled Sprint and will sign up for this plan shortly. -
AT&T Unlimited Internet Service
BillAdams replied to BillAdams's topic in RV Internet to Go/Staying in Touch
In preparation for buying the Verizon plan I just cancelled my nearly worthless unlimited Sprint plan. It was almost $50/month with fees and I will have to pay an $80 cancellation fee but that's better than paying for such crappy service for the next 8 months. I am doing just fine with my Mobley so there's no rush to pick up the Verizon plan. I am also a Verizon phone customer so I wonder if this can be rolled into my existing Verizon account somehow. Since it's billed through FMCA I am guessing not, but it's worth looking into. Thanks for all your hard work FMCA. If this plan doesn't get blown out like some of the past RV plans have this should be an excellent option for RVers. -
Sounds like they had the coach unplugged and the inverter running. If it was powering a lot of stuff for a long time it could easily burn up, especially if there was not good ventilation. You will never be able to prove anything so this might be a good time to buy a better inverter. That's complete speculation as I know nothing about the Magnum brand.

AT&T Unlimited Internet Service
BillAdams replied to BillAdams's topic in RV Internet to Go/Staying in Touch
Wow, you give up? You didn't try very hard. You do need to find a Mobley as they are having problems keeping them in stock at most locations including AT&T. Once you get one, the rest is not too difficult but it's worth it. Have you also looked into the new FMCA unlimited plan through Verizon. While it's twice as much it might still be a good choice as the National coverage for Verizon tends to be better than AT&T. I have all 3 and here in Thornton, CO (Denver suburb) the AT&T is best. Verizon is pretty slow, in fact and Sprint is nearly unusable. -
I-40 Across Arkansas and Eastern Oklahoma
BillAdams replied to obedb's question in Destinations/Attractions
You don't really think the "New Government" that has been in place for less than 6 months is responsible for the years worth of work that went into improving I-45S do you? If you want to thank someone, thank Mr. Obama. -
Having done hundreds of these kinds of repairs I sure would like to hear what you find. I can assure you that if this is a factory installation you CANNOT use the coax as a pull wire. It's all assembled in a jig at the factory and wire tied together.
-
If it's a factory installation then all the wiring is wire tied together and you will not be able to use it as a pull wire. However, you might be able to access the cable or something nearby. See if you can estimate where the coax enters the roof and relate that to where on the inside the cable came through the roof. Is that near anything that is removable or accessible? The coax runs to the wall plate with the power supply and OTA/Cable on/off button (switch). You can follow that cable from the wall plate back toward the roof as well. If you have no way to find a connection between point A and point B you will just need to drop a new cable in a new small hole in the roof and seal it all up with Dicor and a Winegard cable plate.

What is the DOT date stamp for the tires (not what the owner says)? I don't think a Chinese tire is bad by default so I would look at age and appearance before I looked at the name brand. It's not going to be sold in this Country without DOT approval or some branch of Government.

Chandler? Are you talking about West of Pecos, AZ to Chandler, AZ or somewhere not even close to Baton Rouge? -
I-40 Across Arkansas and Eastern Oklahoma

Baton Rouge West I-10 is just fine but E. of Baton Rouge is really crappy for many, many miles. I almost prefer 40 over that section of I-10. -
Remco Drive Shaft Disconnect
BillAdams replied to punxsyjumper's topic in Toads-Towed Behind Motorhome
I forgot to add the best part of the story. Since we had left AZ and were headed into CA we bought 6 cases of 1.75L bottles of Jim Beam as they cost $18.00 in AZ and $30 in CA. Not 1 bottle was lost!- 41 replies

Better than it used to be but still a bit rough in places. I would not avoid it these days. I-10 through LA is still much worse. -
Remco Drive Shaft Disconnect
BillAdams replied to punxsyjumper's topic in Toads-Towed Behind Motorhome
I was really bad timing. I had just shut down my business and gotten hired by Winegard to train all the Western US RV techs on the Winegard product. I think I had been working for them for about 3 months when this happened. I called my boss and said I would need to take some unpaid time off and explained what had happened. He said that I should take whatever amount of time necessary to put my life back together again and I would continue to be paid until I was all setup to work again. Wait, What? We got it all done and had a new van setup to tow again in about 3 weeks and hit the road again never having missed a paycheck. Says a lot about the Winegard Company. A few months later I attended an annual sales rep. meeting at the factory and the opening slide put up was my van with the caption "Some people will do anything to get the Winegard name in the news!" It did make the local news there in Redding, CA. Another funny part of this story was that Redding police showed up and I greeted them. They had gotten dispatch that a van had crashed into the building and the owner ran away when it was actually a run away van crashed into the building. The cop and I laughed and he left saying a tow truck was on the way.- 41 replies

Navigation Apps -- Which are Best?
BillAdams replied to fagnaml's question in Destinations/Attractions
In an RV you have to be careful about using WAZE. If there is any amount of traffic ahead it will route you through neighborhoods or anywhere on any road without concern for the size of your rig. I use Google Maps predominately but turn to WAZE from time to time just to see if there is to get around. I already know where I want to go so I don't need an out-of-date GPS system to tell me how to get there. I just need something to remind me that I have a turn coming and help me get into the right lane(s) to stay on track. Once I get close to my destination, I rely on Google to get me to the front gate.
