VPN for RV'ers, Anybody?
BillAdams replied to punxsyjumper's topic in RV Internet to Go/Staying in Touch
Please don't take offense by this, but if you don't know what HTTP and HTTPS is you might be a bit over your head if you have plans to setup a VPN. Every time you go on the internet you will be visiting a site whose address begins with http://www. or https://www. The S at the end (https) means that you are connected to a secure site like your bank and everything that takes place after that site opens is completely secure. You don't need a VPN or any other form of security. If you go to a known site and it's an HTTPS site (you will also usually see a locked padlock icon vs the unlocked padlock icon) then you can feel comfortable make any necessary transactions. As an example, the reason you can feel safe while shopping at Amazon is the HTTPS address and look for the padlock to the left when you visit. https://www.amazon.com/- 14 replies

VPN for RV'ers, Anybody?
BillAdams replied to punxsyjumper's topic in RV Internet to Go/Staying in Touch
Even campground WiFi is totally secure if you are using an HTTPS (S is the critical part) connection. So I do banking any most anything else using campground WiFi. You just want to make sure you don't enter any personal information on any standard HTTP website.- 14 replies

AT&T Unlimited Internet Service
BillAdams replied to BillAdams's topic in RV Internet to Go/Staying in Touch
Did you call this phone number? 866-595-1222 That is the Connected Car department and they should know what you have, the correct $20/month unlimited plan and the expertise to get it all setup. A few folks have reported that they had to get a new SIM card at an AT&T store but it's pretty rare. -
FMCA & Verizon Offers Specifics?

Now there are a couple of valid answers. Many thanks! -
FMCA & Verizon Offers Specifics?
BillAdams replied to smitty777's topic in RV Internet to Go/Staying in Touch
There's the problem. I am back out on the road in my RV and I NEED internet service. If this was something that was prematurely leaked I wish "someone" has simply given that explanation and stated that details would be forthcoming rather than make it sound like some kind of a secret. Maybe MH needs to take a break himself. I tire very quickly of folks telling me what I should or should not be doing when I am doing nothing wrong. -
Cross Country Trip, Reservations Yes/No
BillAdams replied to Bob26894's question in Destinations/Attractions
If you are planning to visit any National Parks or similar popular destinations while the schools are out for the Summer I would make reservations. For lesser popular destinations I don't make reservations but instead call the campground when I am certain I am on the way. Yesterday we arrived in Raton, NM looking for an overnight spot where we did not need to disconnect the tow. We called after lunch, made a reservation and got in around 4pm. Good choice as all the pull-throughs were booked by the time we got there. -
FMCA & Verizon Offers Specifics?
BillAdams replied to smitty777's topic in RV Internet to Go/Staying in Touch
If a discount plan exists there is simply no excuse that information on the plan is not posted here and on the FMCA website for all to see. There are so many details that it's unlikely everyone would even know all of the questions to ask. Sounds like a plan put together for the FMCA regionals and office personnel and been kept hidden from the public. Not good. -
FMCA & Verizon Offers Specifics?
BillAdams replied to smitty777's topic in RV Internet to Go/Staying in Touch
Herman, That is not helpful to anyone. Tell us what the program is, where we can find the information and how (not a phone call) to find out what the program involves. You make it sound like it's a secret benefit that can only be given to those in the know. I am hopeful that this is not the case and if it's not, there should be public information available somewhere on this site. Your post says " As I said, call for Noah at FMCA". As you said "where"? Do I need to know a secret handshake or something? -
FMCA & Verizon Offers Specifics?
BillAdams replied to smitty777's topic in RV Internet to Go/Staying in Touch
Where did you see this plan. I have not heard of a similar offer. -
Verizon has the best Nationwide service and this has nothing to do with iPhone or Android hardware. The 2nd best is AT&T followed by Sprint. There are also providers like T-Mobile and whatever that Wal-Mart service is called (googled Straight Talk) that can provide reasonable service prices for many users. You really cannot beat the AT&T Mobley deal from any provider at this time.
-
WiFi would be a service provided by the campground where you park. Do NOT make this your plan. What you need is your own data service and that will need to be provided by Verizon (best), AT&T (2nd) or Sprint (3rd but still OK). Most folks either use your existing smart phone as a hotspot (wifi to the other devices in your coach but service provided by you!) or they buy a separate MiFi device that allows you to be on the phone or leave with the phone and the RV will still have internet service. Do a search for MiFi and then take a look at the topic here about AT&T unlimited service and the Mobley MiFi. $20/month!

Road Closure: I 35 North Of Ft Worth
BillAdams replied to wildebill308's topic in General Discussion
Wow, I am going that route tomorrow but will be there long before 9 PM tomorrow. Whew! Thanks for the information. -
So it is interesting to see that there is an FMCA Amazon portal which takes a percentage of any Amazon sales entered through this portal. There is also a Wounded Warrior Portal called smile.amazon.com This is going to be difficult for me as I really like the Wounded Warrior campaign but I think I will continue to use the smile portal. Sorry guys!

Is this a plug you can unplug? Did you do so an inspect the interior as well as the pins? If it is removable and it looks pretty clean and shiny I doubt your issue is here but you should be able to trace that wire back at least a bit to see if there might be some critter damage or a bare wire due to something rubbing. Trace as far as you can and then see if you can determine where it enters the coach. You may be able to find access to it inside as well. You should also be able to remove the remote panel or find access to the back so you can check for issues there as well.

AT&T Unlimited Internet Service

So far so good! Even if it goes bad somewhere down the line no one will have spent much money. I think I am on my 4th month now so it's well paid for! -
AT&T Unlimited Internet Service
BillAdams replied to BillAdams's topic in RV Internet to Go/Staying in Touch
There is no contract. The Mobley cost $99 at Best Buy. They are getting a bit hard to find but they are still out there. Here's a link to the ZTE website and the module. https://www.zteusa.com/mobley You then buy (or make) a 120V adapter that you plug the Mobley into and change the software so it never times out (like you would want it to do if it were in your car) and you sign up for the Connected Car service from AT&T. $20/month plus a couple of bucks in taxes. There is also a $25 activation fee but they waived that for me when I asked. There is a detailed thread (a couple) in the Technology Topic on RV.net -
I doubt most readers will understand what you said which is why I did not respond. What I am not sure about is what service OnStar uses. Maybe they have agreements with all providers to ensure coverage and why it is so expensive. If so, this would explain the improved service but has nothing at all to do with the # of bars shown.

Which Outlet To Use For Residential Refrigerator
BillAdams replied to OLDMARINE's topic in Modifications
No RR is going to draw too many amps for a 2000W inverter (16.6 amps). Most microwave/convection oven setups are 1000W or less (8.3 amps). If there is too much draw going on on your inverted circuits it's going to be the microwave plus something other than the fridge kicking in at the same time. A running fridge uses less than 2 amps and the startup amperage (4-6 amps) has to be compared to the inverter startup wattage of 4000W (33.2 amps). I used a 2000W MSW inverter for many, many years without any issues related to my RR fridge. What I don't recommend is using ANY microwave/convection oven with a MSW inverter but they work quite well with a TSW inverter assuming you have enough battery storage to handle the huge draw. -
Love you guys! Hang in there and don't put up with any ship from the huddled masses. You know your rights and you absolutely need to stand up for them. Both FMCA and Good Sam have folks that can help you (in some cases) when local regulations allow RV's but local ignoramus try to stop it. Hang in there and don't punch out your neighbor no matter how stupid or uninformed he might be.

Yes, Ernie still does this. He does carpet or hardwood flooring only. He is located in Weatherford, TX.

AT&T Unlimited Internet Service
BillAdams replied to BillAdams's topic in RV Internet to Go/Staying in Touch
Yes, you can use the phone as a hotspot but the amount of data you can use is highly limited in this mode and depending upon your plan you may not be able to tether at all. There is software designed to overcome this limitation and you can look that up as I don't remember what it's called at the moment (FoxFi?). For $20/month you get a stand-alone hotspot that will allow you to connect up to 5 devices and gives excellent 4G service (assuming you are in a good service area). You can use up to 22GB per month with no restrictions and after that you will stay connected but can be subject to network optimization which only means if the tower you are on is crowded other requests will hit the internet before yours. Thus far no one has reported any noticeable slowdowns. -
Against The Law To Idle, Gas Or Diesel
BillAdams replied to rlbarkleyii's topic in Type A motorhomes
Actually, that's likely not correct. If you were driving 65 MPH and you suddenly had to stop for traffic 5 minutes might not be enough time. However, for most of us we slow down for the exit, drive at a substantially slower speed to where we plan to stop or fuel or whatever and during that time the engine has had more than ample time to cool down. By the time to get where you actually plan to shut down the engine everything is plenty cool enough to shut down. -
If it's yellow, let it mellow. If it's brown, flush it down. I don't think this needs any additional explanation.

Allowing Towables Vote At Indianapolis In July
BillAdams replied to jeff753's topic in FMCA Feedback
I don't believe that input from the membership makes any difference at all to the FMCA operations just like the stock holder votes don't make any difference when the stockholders do not have controlling interest. FMCA will do what they believe to be necessary to continue to be able to pay the bills and pay the employees (owners). This is not a bad thing as many businesses have been forced to re-invent themselves to survive. If FMCA believe that the only way to survive is to completely re-invent themselves then that will be the vote when it's time to make the vote no matter what the membership believes. Again, not to be a negative statement but rather a reasonable expectation of any business trying to keep from going the way of the Dodo bird.
