  1. With both of those campgrounds you need to start trying to get reservations a long time in advance. Now you can't drive your POV into the canyon at Zion, you have to use the shuttle busses. The same at the Grand Canyon you can't drive your POV west past the El Tovar hotel. The busses are great and run about every 15 min. Bill
  2. How many people do you know that really understand how to drive a diesel? Especially newbies. I think a good EGT gage is required to properly drive a diesel. I have heard that old wives tale about you can't get high EGT temps in a unmodified engine before and it is easy to disprove, just install a good EGT gage. Bill
  3. You can have high EGT on a totally stock engine. If you don't have a EGT gauge you can be doing damage and not knowing it. The important thing is to know so you can take measures to reduce it either backing off on the throttle or dropping a gear to reduce load. Bill
  4. Tom is absolutely right. I have ben in 9 National parks this summer and You will have a much better experience not trying to drive your coach into any park. The only place where I thought you might be able to do it was at the Painted Desert, but don't be surprised when all the parking is full at any given stop. The only place I have stayed in a National park was at Trailer village at the Grand Canyon. Bill
  5. Good idea to give the alternator extra cooling. There have been several times on long slow grades when using the cruse control the computer will be adjusting boost and fuelling to maintain speed. This can drive the EGT past acceptable levels. Best option is to drop one or two gears to reduce load and that will control your EGT's. Bill
  6. Anyone who wears the hat you do is going to get looked at funny. I found at least two pump nozzles at different truck stops that were 100% on or nothing. No trickling in to top off there. Bill
  7. I think EGT temps is one of the most important bits of information you need to monitor on a turbo charged diesel. I have a Banks IQ and have it set up to monitor EGT, boost, transmission temp and GPS corrected speed. I am not sure I want to see the instant MPG This last trip west I spent a lot of time climbing (does yours show negative numbers) and I know the mileage was down. Bill
  8. I would add a good Exhaust Temperature Gage and a boost gage if the scan gage does not monitor boost. Bill
  9. Welcome to the forum Lem & Diane Chance. Yes fixing your vent lines will help when pumping at a truck stop. I have found that sometimes you have to use the lowest delivery rate with the high volume pumps. Be careful as the foam can come back out and make a mess. I would only use one pump at a time and only open one filler at a time as you have a higher risk of a fuel spill. I don't know what you are saying/meaning about the pump shutting off and you have to restart it. I am kind of in the middle here. I will use a smaller station or sams ect. but if the prices are in line at Pilot I will use them. I have noticed in many locations Pilot is higher priced. I think that may have something to do with them losing a legal battle and having to pay a big settlement. I think they are trying to recoup the money they lost. Before they were usually the cheapest truck stop. Bill
  10. I agree but I am to lazy now. Someone showed me the app " Where am I" and It claims to be accurate within 50'. rfsod48 posted saying it was down by Mansfield. I just re checked and it does come pretty close. Ok I may have to borrow a sextant and make my own observation and compare it to a USGS topo map Bill
  11. Well according to my app "Where am I " that is the coordinates for North Richland hills, mid cities area. I haden't checked how accurate this app is SO hear is the Google coordinates. N32°50'51.5" W -97°12'19.9". a little different. It shows that it is a good idea to have more than one source. Bill
  12. Just as clarification, when you turn the key do you wait for the "wait to start" light to go out or do you go right to the start position? Have you checked with a meter that your start batteries are at full charge? Bill
  13. Are you geting the dash lights and warning buzzers? Have you tried to use the switch to tie the batteries together when you try to start? How old are your start battery's? Bill
  14. That is exactly why I like my portable Surge Guard. I can test the power before getting the coach set up. several time I have had to find a different site because the power wasn't right in the first spot. Much easier to carry the Surge Gard to the new site rather than moving the coach. So I do infact have a portable tester that won't pass power to the coach unless everything is right. I hear people saying they don't need a Surge Gard because they test the power before they plug in. This is a false sense of security a it only gives you a snapshot of what the power is right now. Power supplies can fluctuate greatly in campgrounds. Bill
  15. Gee that is nice, but it only works /gives you a status when plugged in. My Surgeguard does that and protects all the time, not just when I am watching and protects against hi and low events automatically. Bill
  16. That is understandable. Once you get some miles and experience under your belt you will be able to relax. I had a bad air hose and after it was fixed it took several days travel before I felt comfortable again. Bill
  17. I just have to ask why. I get weather alerts on my phone. I don't need to know what the weather is at my location, I need to know what is coming. I can get all the weather from the national weather service. The important thing is to use something like Google Maps to see where you are when they transmit severe weather alerts, so you know if it is coming toward you or away from your location. Bill
  18. I drove that route last month and you're looking at a long day. I stopped in Countryside RV Park, 30 Sawmill Rd, Dillon, MT 59725, csrvmt.com, (406) 683-9860. Interesting place to visit is Golden Spike Utah, Brigham City, UT. This is the historic site where the first transcontinental railroad met. They bring out vintage steam engins and re enact the meeting. Bill

  20. I heare you as I started Before slides. One person had to sit down so the other could get past. I wouldn't be looking at less than 38'- 40'. We bought the current coach because it had opposing slides in the front and felt more open. I hear people saying they need a small coach to get in tight spots and I ask why do you think you need to stay in tight spots. We just got back from a trip where we were in 31 different campgrounds. yes some were a little cramped but I didn't find any that you couldn't park a 40' coach. Bill
  21. Yes it can be tedious but better to do your do diligence and get the right coach and be happy with it than being un happy with the wrong coach. Be shure your wife is happy with the kitchen and the floor plan. Bill
  22. Ok Herman, Get your dividers out and your parallel ruel and tell me where I am tonight. N32 Degrees 50.828 W97 Degrees 12.222. I can't remember how to find the degree symbol . I use CoPilot as you can download the maps ahead of time over wifi and you don't use data. I use RV Parkey to find places to stay in the areas I am interested in. I use RV Park reviews to see how the places I am looking at are rated. I use Google maps to calculate distance. Bill
