  1. The Cummins failures so far have been between the "rail" and injectors. This video explains how some Cummins systems operate.
  2. It looks like 3-4 years is as far back for this issue.... in general. The Detroit that failed yesterday was a 2018 unit with 4200 miles on it. Other issues began when the EPA shoved the emissions systems down everyone's throat. I have had injection pumps fail from the casting not being able to handle the PSI and it boaring a hole in them on a 2012 Cummins ISL and a 2007CAT C7S. With that kind of pressure spraying around an engine compartment you can do some serious bodily harm, its like a water jet CNC machine.
  3. No, the lines that are failing are metal. I have seen them crack, almost as if the metal composition was wrong for the application i.e. hardened to the point that it shatters or cracks like glass. Given the amount of PSI in todays diesel engines (some into 40,000 psi) running through them, the lines are stressed beyond what their metal can handle, toss some vibration into that and they fail, we wont get into what country they were probably sourced from also doesn't help matters......

    Fuel Injectors

Most common, clogged or plugged on the oil side. Reason; motor oil is not often designed to be utilized as hydraulic oil, when pressurized to over 3000 psi to actuate the injectors on a HEUI engine it sludge's up, usually within the injector. There are products out there to clear the crud created but often it can be too late. This situation is often amplified on an engine that idles excessively, as the extreme oil pressure entering can help blast the crud out, at idle it just stacks it on. I have had some success in disassembling the CAT injector, cleaning out the oil side, replacing the poppet valve seal and reassembling/reinstalling in the engine. Here is an explanation on how yours work. FYI the 7.3L powerstroke ford and CAT 3126 series use the same injectors (appearance) just some internal stuff is different. http://www.trucktrend.com/how-to/expert-advice/1304dp-heui-how-high-pressure-oil-injection-systems-work/
  5. This seems to be a problem with other engine manufactures also. I just had a freightliner Tractor yesterday with a Detroit engine do the same thing, it was shooting fuel onto the turbocharger, no fire just a bunch of smoke from the fuel burning off.
  6. Rick, snap some photos of with explanations and post them, pictures would be a huge help in assisting you with the project.
  7. hmmm...never thought of it that way before you are right
  8. We looked at one at a CG last year, Easter weekend I believe. It had Aqua Hot with a dedicated diesel tank, Pulled by a Volvo sleeper tractor. The guy was nice it was made by Newmar, he was contemplating trading up to a DP, driving the tractor around was a huge pain for him, plus the usual issues trailers experience. This thing was so big it had dual wheels on two axles, first for me...
  9. Roland...when you say "Fifth wheel unit" you referring to the trailer or the hitch? Assuming the trailer itself, cant imagine why anyone would spend $100,000 on a Fifth wheel. What's a FIVER? Sounds like something a shot of penicillin would cure .
  10. He must have a short bed pickup, you mean like this? http://www.turnoverball.com/products/single-point-attachment/companion-slider-5th-wheel-hitch
  11. Another one; Fifth Wheels Discuss all topics specifically r/t Fifth Wheels. Wouldn't the hitch related stuff belong with towing? According to the Webster dictionary; Definition of fifth wheel 1 a : a horizontal wheel or segment of a wheel that consists of two parts rotating on each other above the fore axle of a carriage and that forms support to prevent tipping b : a similar coupling between tractor and trailer of a semitrailer 2 : one that is superfluous, unnecessary, or burdensome
  12. By fiver I guess you mean the trailer? I purchase many Fifth wheels for work. We prefer this brand, I'm betting its too big for this light duty application. http://www.safholland.us/us/en/products/fifth-wheels/holland-fw35-series/holland-fw35
  13. Monk, you bypassed the fuel filter? So perform a careful inspection of the line connections, remove the filter and inspect the O-rings. Either way replace the filter, lube the o-rings and seals prior to installing.
  14. Not an issue with how it works, its an issue of "is it safe to be driven". In a car you step on the pedal, if it doesn't go to the floor you're good. Complex air brake system with such a large vehicle, completely different animal.
  15. I will admit, I was disappointed how laxed they are with motorhomes in PA. They let you go over and over until you get the pretrip right. I don't agree with this, you should have it memorized especially if you have been operating an air brake vehicle for any period of time, it just shows how many people are operating these that shouldn't be when you have no idea how to make sure your sure brakes are safe to drive. I'm betting most will take the test and forget about it. They were a bit more picky on the roadtest which made me feel better. In PA part of the pretrip is walking through the interior making sure items in the interior are secured also.
  16. gfitz302 two times I have done this for people in PA, both times it was in Reading PA and both times they could care less that I was with them and had a CDL. Two different examiners told us since it was a non-commercial it wasn't necessary. When you ask the question on the phone or on paperwork you get the CDL answer. Its tough to call most DMV's and get the right answer, I'm guessing this occurs in most states.
  17. Guys with the multiple failures, do you have an inline water filter? Just trying to wrap my head around it.... RSBILL, the next time you camp near us, if you decide to Skinny shower up please let us know, we gone shopping that morning
