  1. The C-T RR crosses the Continental Divide. The grade is steeper on the Chama side, so the steam engine(s) work harder going up. Sometimes they use 2 engines to get up the grade if they have a heavier load of people. So most people prefer to start in Chama. Also, there is a rest/lunch stop in the middle where both east and west trains meet. You have the option of returning to Chama or going onto Antonito. Sorry, don't know anything about campgrounds.
  2. FWIW, we were driving our 2004 Knight ISC on an Interstate when all of a sudden engine and instrument panel died. Fortunately was able to coast to an exit ramp. After much searching and head scratching, I noticed the 2 heavy cables going to the chassis battery disconnect switch were a little loose, Switch looked OK, but took its cover off to check the cable tightness. When I did that, the switch fell apart in my hands! Bolted the 2 heavy cables together, bypassing the disconnect switch, and we were on our way with no further problems. My guess is that the switch was overtightened when initially installed stressing the switch which ultimately caused it to fail..As an aside, I found an exact replacement switch at WalMart online of all places. I installed the new switch carefully to avoid stressing it. It's a marine switch made in New Zealand. Gene M
  3. Try http://www.digikey.com/ . They have all kinds of terminals. BTW, the metal pieces are called terminals and come in both male and female. The plastic pieces are called connectors and come in both male and female. The terminals (after attaching the wires) are inserted into the connectors. . Monaco should be able to tell you who supplied the smart wheel. I would contact them. Also, VIP http://www.vipwheels.com/ makes smart wheels. If you could take a picture of the steering wheel, send it to them and ask if it is theirs. If not theirs, they can probably tell whose it is. Also, Douglas Autotech http://www.douglasautotech.com/ is likely the manufacturer of the steering column, so they may also be of help. Gene M - 2004 Monaco Knight
  4. C, G, & J Inc in Gadsden, AL has patterns for many RV radiators. They can also duplicate your current radiator. Worth giving them a call. 1-800-223-4299 Gene M 04 Monaco Knight
  5. I bought one of those Sears/Aosom/Amazon torque multipliers, Haven't had an occasion to use it yet, but loaned it to a friend who used it on some 22.5" wheels and he said it worked great. As stated above, the ratio is 58 to 1. My only complaint is the plastic box it comes in. It is a total piece of junk. It is really thin plastic and this is a heavy tool. The box arrived broken in several places and continues to break just sitting there. I complained (via Amazon) and Aosom contacted me and offered a new box or a $25 refund. Since the new box would be the same as the one I had, I took the $25 and didn't look back. Gene M 04 Monaco Knight

    Inverter Type

I was at an RV electrical seminar recently and the presenter said that a pure sine wave inverter is not pure, but rather has several more square wave steps to more closely approximate a pure sine wave. Is that correct?
  7. Keep in mind that the diesel engine emission regulations apply to the model year of the ENGINE, not the chassis, not the coach. For instance, you could have a 2009 engine in a 2010 chassis in a 2011 coach and it will not require DEF. DPF's (Diesel Particulate Filters) were required on 2007 model year engines and SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) using DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) was required on 2010 model year ENGINES (except for some Navistar/Maxxforce engines).
  8. You might try Chris Throgmartin at Stone Vos http://stonevoss.com/ .He specializes in premium awning material. His material may be too good for tire covers - ask him. I believe all you are trying to do with tire covers is keep UV rays from the tires. Most anything will work, even large pieces of cardboard (although a bit ugly). Gene M
  9. Kent, The 2007 Country Coach you are looking at - does it have a 2006 engine? If so, it will not have a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter). 2007 engines required a DPF. Note: This applies to the model year of the engine, not the model year of the chassis or coach body. In my view, an engine without a DPF is more desireable.

  11. I lied. There are 3 seals on the door jamb, not 2. There is an innermost all-around wiper seal for the screen door.
  12. I looked at my 2004 Knight door. The jamb has 2 seals, except just 1 at the bottom - an all around bulb seal and a 3 side wiper seal. The door itself has an additional all-around wiper seal. Looks like you can remove trim pieces to replace both wiper seals. Not sure about the bulb seal.
  13. If you have separate stop and turn lights on your coach (3-wire system) and combination stop and turn on your toad (2-wire system), you will need to add a converter to your coach near the trailer socket, such as CURT Tail Light Converter #56146 . There are also 2- to 3-wire converters.
  14. At the Cummins Come-Home rally in Columbus last fall, we took a tour through the new assembly line for the new small V8. We were told at that time that the engine would be exclusive to the Nissan Titan. Maybe that has changed.
  15. "The National Museum of the United States Air Force (formerly the United States Air Force Museum) is the official museum of the United States Air Force located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, 6 miles (9.7 km) northeast of Dayton, Ohio. The NMUSAF has one of the world's largest collections with more than 360 aircraft and missiles on display. The museum draws over 1.3 million visitors each year making it one of the most frequently visited tourist attractions in Ohio". Don't know if that would be of interest to you.

    El Paso, TX

Mission RV Park is OK. It's in an industrial area. I have a 39' diesel pusher and pull a 24' box trailer. We were at our son's house in El Paso for a week this past Xmas. We could fit the MH at my son's house, but not the trailer, so took the trailer to Mission RV. They had lots of room for transients. Felt safe leaving the trailer there. They put me in a regular RV space and charged me the regular RV rate ($$$). I would use them again.
  17. I put a clothespin under the parking brake knob.
  18. You need to determine what brand of step you have. Kwikee and Lippert are common ones. Kwikee's need to be kept lubricated as mentioned, otherwise not many complaints about them. Lippert's, however, are currently involved in a major safety recall. Over 47,000 steps being recalled. Google "Lippert Safety Recall" for more information. Yes, I know Lippert now owns Kwikee, but the steps are different designs.
  19. I agree with everything Brett recommended. Regarding the CAC, make sure it is thoroughly cleaned in & out, and then pressure tested. Check the CAC hoses as well. Then check the air intake system to make sure it is clear and install a new air cleaner element. Another source for radiators is http://www.cgj.com/ in Gadsden, Alabama. A friend has had good luck with them. Be sure to request a 4 row radiator regardless of where you get it. Don't let them talk you into a 3 row. Extending the crankcase breather tube is an excellent idea. Extending it to the rear corner of the coach will keep it from fouling the CAC/Radiator and dirtying your rear mud flap.
  20. I have an I-Pass. The short answer to your question is "I don't know how it works", but it DOES work. I don't pull a car but I do pull a large enclosed trailer. I pull the trailer with both my '39 DP or my large SUV. And the I-Pass works great every time. I list the trailer, DP and SUV plus other daily cars in my I-Pass profile and swap the I-Pass to whichever vehicle I'm using. I can't tell if I'm being charged the correct toll. Hopefully the various toll readers work correctly. When I log on to my I-Pass account, I can see the Date/Time,Toll amount,Toll road name, Toll Plaza name and lane for each toll. However, it does not tell me what vehicle(s) were being used. To me, the convenience of not having to stop to pay a toll easily outweighs any disadvantages. I love it.
  21. I like the Illinois I-Pass. It is fully compatible with EZ-Pass. Everything can be done online, including getting one. You don't have to live in Illinois. They only have 2 different transponders - a blue one for commercial vehicles and a white one for everything else. You list the make, model, state, license plate and type of license plate of all the vehicles you might use it on. You can swap it between vehicles. They don't ask for vehicle type, size, weights, axles, etc. Cost is one time deposit (refundable) of $10 plus $40 of toll funds. When the $40 is used up, they automatically debit your credit card for another $40. You can go online to check usage, update credit card info and update vehicle info. Nothing to mail in or phone calls to make. Try it, you'll like it!
  22. As a rule, a male fitting on your coach is for putting air INTO the coach. A female fitting on your coach is for taking air OUT of the coach. If there is no fitting on an air line which has a shutoff valve, it is an air tank moisture drain.
  23. I recently had the same problem on my 2004 38' Knight. Expansion valve was plugged. They replaced the expansion valve, receiver/dryer, flushed the high pressure line and recharged. Cost was a little over $500. Worked great on a recent trip from Indiana to Florida and back.
  24. From Wiki: "Under MAP-21 (Federal legislation passed in 2012), all ETC (Electronic Tool Collection) facilities in the United States must reach some form of interoperability by October 1, 2016." So we have something to look forward to. Hope it is not delayed. When we had a class C with front overhang, we mounted our I-Pass low/center of the windshield and it worked fine. If you ever want to see if your device is working properly, just head for a manual/cash toll collection lane. Gate should open automatically. Note: I-Pass, EZ-Pass, I-Zoom are all compatible with each other. These devices do have non-replaceable batteries in them and they do die eventually. We had concerns about ours and stopped at an I-Pass service center. They confirmed the battery was dead and quickly replaced it at no charge. The I-Pass is issued by Illinois. We don't live in Illinois but we do have an Illinois I-Pass. It is very user friendly. Everything can be done online, including getting one. They have only 2 types: a white one for cars, non-commercial trucks, RV's, etc., and a blue one for commercial trucks and buses. No classes of vehicles to be concerned with. You can list all your vehicles under one I-Pass - cars, trailers, motorhomes, etc., no matter what the size. We have one I-Pass and move it between vehicles as needed (legal with I-Pass). Once when we were traveling with friends in their vehicle, we listed their vehicle and used our I-Pass without any problem. Hope this helps.
  25. Lazy Days in Tampa and Tucson offer RV driver training. A friend took the Tampa course in his own motorhome and found it very worthwhile (he didn't buy his motorhome from Lazy Days). They also instructed his wife in the basics so she would know how to move the motorhome in an emergency. There are also a number of YouTube videos on RV driving, including some from Lazy Days.
