  1. I am trying to figure out how to wire an older Jeep Cherokee (1999 XJ) to a newer 2019 Southwind Motorhome. I have called trailer a couple of times and keep getting different answers. I called Roadmaster and gott an even different answer. part of the issues are: When the Jeep is off and I depress the brake, the brake light will light. Roadmaster says I need Roadmaster Brake-Lite Relay Kit for Towed Vehicles. while e trailer says there is no need for this but I will need Vehicle to Vehicle Tail Light Converter and 2 additional diodes. Roadmaster says this is not needed! Another e trailer representative says none of this is needed and to watch there video. BTW I am planning to install the Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit I am really lost on where to go with this. Also, when towing a car does the license plate need to be illuminated at night. If so will the tail lights automatically turn this light on?
  2. I am towing (for the first time towing anything) a Ford Fusion Hybrid on all 4 behind my RV. I'm using a Roadmaster tow bar and Roadmaster tow base plate on my car. Also using Invisibrake for my braking system. After towing 1400 miles, I feel like my front left bearings are making noise and have a little front end snapping noise when turning ... noises I never had before towing this car. Can towing cause these kinds of problems? Could I have done something wrong? Any suggestions or have you had similar experience?
  3. Can a 2003 Saturn Vue AWD with 6Cyl 5speed automatic transmission be flat towed? The 2003 Saturn owners manual is not available on line.
  4. Howdy all. The jury is in and We will get an enclosed trailer and tow the wife's car. So I need some more advise. Where is the best place to advertise my 2014 Ford F150 4x4 for sale. It is set up with the Blu Ox base plate and other items for flat towing. Are there any advertisers who specialize or focus on RVer's?
  5. Hi all, I have a Nexus 40D on order with an ISB360 and an Allison 3000. Can anyone with a similar sized unit and drivetrain attest to the pulling power for a toad? I’m looking at pulling an suv weighing 5,000 or 6,000 lb. Want to make sure I’m not overloading the drivetrain from a usability standpoint (I know I’m within max parameters). Thanks, Shawn
  6. @hermanmullins, this may be one for you! Preparing my wife’s 2017 Ford Explorer Limited for flat towing behind our gasser motorhome. All weights, capacities and other items have been checked and validated. The chosen towing package includes the Blue Ox baseplate and ReadyBrute Elite towbar. Will be wiring the lights with diodes. Here are my questions: 1. Ford manual says to disconnect the battery negative cable. Does anyone really know why? Please not a guess or heard it somewhere, or just because the manual says so. If it is just to prevent the battery from running down I will install a toad charger. I would rather keep It connected and have the toad brake lights functional when the toad brakes are applied. 2. If I can leave the toad battery connected with a charger, why couldn’t I leave it in the accessory position (accessory mode with keyless ignition) and put the headlamps in parking lights mode. This would provide front and rear marker lights as well as tail lights. At this point all I would need to wire up are the turn signals. 3. Have ordered a full frontal bra cover to protect paint and windshield. Read an article where they did not recommend a vertical mounted tow shield or bra cover that blocked the transmission cooler as the transmission could overheat. What?? Hard to believe a toad transmission would generate much heat being towed. Anyone else experience this issue? Thanks in advance for any wisdom that can be shared. I typed all this on a smartphone so please excuse any typos or spell correct errors.
  7. I have a 2011 Cadillac SRX 3.0 L naturally aspirated. Any additional comments on these instructions toad towing??? Thanks much.I have a small screwdriver that I use just to make it easier to push the button. But yes, it's just a button - slightly recessed. I just keep the screwdriver in the door pocket. Any small pointy object will work. So, the steps exactly:1) Get everything hooked up, then start engine (if not running) and with foot firmly on brake, shift to neutral, pull shift boot up from the back by hooking fingers and pulling up. (There's not enough slack to pull it up when in park, and it won't shift out of drive without the motor running).2) Shift back to park, shut off engine.3) While pressing button (upper right corner under shift boot, pull shifter back to neutral.4) Double-check that you got neutral NOT DRIVE. You won't have a dash light to tell you, so visually double-check. You can tell as if it is in Drive it will move over to the manual shift notch, if in neutral it will not.5) Check again.GO!!!!To reverse the process, just shift it back into drive BEFORE you unhook everything. This resets everything. One other thing: If you use a seat-based brake system (Brake buddy, Patriot), be VERY aware not to trigger the automatic seat movement where it moves the seat based on opening the door or pressing the key fob. That really screws things up. You can either turn off the feature through the menu system of don't press the buttons on the key fob. One really handy thing: You can use the pedal positioning feature to adjust the brake system.OK, I lied - one other little note. To protect the battery, Cadillac shuts off all the 12V plugs 10 minutes after the ignition is shut off - EXCEPT the one back in the cargo bay. So I just ran a 12V extension cord from the back to the front, under the edges of the seats. Problem solved.
  8. We are in Florida and have to set up our new Focus as our Toad. I would like to buy everything off the internet to save a ton on the cost....however......where do you get it all installed? I use Blue Ox equipment and we tried to have the Blue Ox authorized dealer install our own purchased equipment before with very poor results. Basically they tell you...You buy it from us and we will install it or the install price goes through the roof. Does anyone know of a reputable shop that does this type of work in the Tampa/Orlando area? I don't mind paying for an honest days work but to have to pay someone 40 to 60% mark-up on the equipment and then the install is tough to swallow...........Happy New Year and safe travels !!!!!
  9. we will be traveling in our 40 ft Tradition , pulling a Spark on a dolly , starting Dec 3 , Dec in Portland , Dec 6 in redwoods , Dec 9 in Monterey
  10. In looking at the owner's manual for the 2017 Acadia (newly downsized from the 2016)) the manual states that it can be towed and all that has to be done is do 'depress' the little button on the shift level under the boot. No longer have to disconnect batteries OR fuses? Well, at least according to the manual. We are looking at buying a new 2017 Acadia - Not the 2017 Acadia limited which is on the old body style. Has anybody else bought one and had it set up for towing - and if so what did you use? I already have the Roadmaster tow bar but like the looks of the 'tabs' on the blue ox much better. Have been towing a 2000 Blazer using Roadmaster towbar with blue ox base plate and a Roadmaster evenbrake for supplemental braking. Would plan on using a battery charge line kit as many a time have a dead battery in Blazer is of 'limited' fun. Open to any works of wisdom and what other people are using. Thanks, Lee Baldwin
  11. The rear tires on our 2011 Honda CRV all wheel drive have had cupping problems, resulting in rough handling and lots of road noise. Have replaced tires twice. Never had this problem on our 2002 CRV. Any ideas? 2006 Itasca Meridian 36g 2011 Honda CRV toad
  12. Hi folks, I am single living on my SSD and now a new full-timer in my '97 Discover R36, although I've been RVing for 4+ years, and lived on my sail boat for 20+ years before that! Actually I like the small space where everything has its place and a place for everything. My issue is that now I am full time I don't think the 2005 Mini Cooper S Convertible I am currently towing is the best vehicle for the job. I need something that I can replace it with that is more functional, better mileage, cheaper to repair. Selling the Mimi should not be a problem, I hope! But what to buy? I checked into Jeeps (Wrangler, Cherokee), but they are expensive and get low mileage. I know my budget is smaller than most, but I think it is doable and when all is said and done that's it... $4K for the car $1k for any repairs (there's always something that needs fixing) $1k for Blue-Ox base plate (parts & labor). Searching for a used car is not much of a problem... but researching if it can be flat towed IS a long process. Can anyone suggest a car that can be flat-towed (Blue-Ox) for about $4k? Thanks in advance to everyone for the assistance.
  13. A search of the Subaru website for the word "towing" on Oct 5, 2016 http://www.subaru.com/customer-support.html Found the following Q&A: Q "What recommendations does Subaru have about towing my vehicle behind a motor home?" A "Please follow the recommendations outlined in the Owner's Manual if there is a need to tow a Subaru vehicle. The best way to transport your vehicle is a flatbed tow truck with ALL wheels off the ground. Always follow the precautions and recommendations outlined in the Owner's Manual if flat towing with all wheels on the ground is unavoidable in an emergency situation." We have been flat towing our 2003 Subaru Forester (5 speed manual trans) with four wheels on the ground since 2004 behind three different Class A RVs (one gas, two diesel) for many thousand miles with no problems or incidents. Falcon Roadmaster # 5250 towbar.
  14. We have to sell because of my wife health as she can't handle RV life anymore. El Nino sure didn't help in Desert Hot Springs as it brought unseasonable wind and rain in the area. Even though I have low miles and many upgrades I like to find a way to get out from under the loan. I will call today for balance vs value today. My wife don't like to make payments on a coach that not going to be used often. I also wonder if Bank of The West will allow take over the load. Lucky for me there is no issues I know that needs to be fix and service is up to date but it will need a good cleaning and polish. That will be hard for the outside with the NW many days of rain. I thought about selling with the toad and all towing equipment to bring more value to the coach as the setup works perfect together. I wonder if the FMCA membership is transferable to the new owners as I will be out of it or do I have to remove the goose eggs and let my membership expire?
  15. Does anyone know if a 2005 Chevy Colorado can be towed four down (automatic transmission and two wheel drive)?
  16. We are looking to buy a toad. We have had our gas class A for almost a year and rented cars last year, it worked, but was very troublesome. Because our tow capacity isn't that of a pusher I am concerned that our car or choice (we are looking at Wranglers) would be too much for what we can do. So, I guess I have 2 questions, the first has anybody flat towed a wrangler or wrangler unlimited behind a v10 class A? The second, any leads on where to look to buy a jeep already set up to tow?
  17. I just bought a motor home. It came with the Blue Ox tow bar and a Brake Buddy. Now I need to get a base plate for my car (2009 Scion xB, 5 speed manual). I checked with an RV dealer and they quoted me just a few bucks shy of $2000 for the base plate, electrical kit, and toad battery charger wiring kit, and 10 hours of labor. Does this sound about right? I am in SW Florida. Am I better ordering parts myself and does anyone know someone in SW FL they would recommend to do the work? How hard is it to do myself (the kit says the from fascia of the car has to come off, and it has to be cut for the tow bar attachments. I am not all that crafty other than turning a wrench and following easy directions--I don't think I have the skills to figure out exactly where to measure and cut the holes in the front end bumper fascia, and a mistake would be costly. Appreciate anyone's input on any of the above ... Chief
  18. Can a 4x4 Ford Ranger with an electronic transfer case be towed with 4 wheels on the ground?? It depends on who you ask as to the answer you get, I'm hoping my FMCA family can tell me...you would know best...
  19. Just putting this out as an FYI. Our toad is an 05 Jeep Liberty and it has an intermittent but frequent problem of the passenger side brake light bulb burning out. After much electrical troubleshooting to no avail, while replacing the bulb for the umpteenth time today I discovered the cause. Inside the brake/turn/tail light assembly each bulb sits in its own little chamber and in the chamber there are reflector/refractor lenses that clip into place between the bulbs and the light assembly. The refector/refractor lens for the brake light has come loose and can be bumped into a position allowing it to make contact with the bulb which causes the bulb to overheat and crack. I had suspected rain was entering the light assembly and causing the bulbs to crack but today I noticed a small melt point on the loose lens. I have now glued the lens in place with Gorilla glue and should not have a repeat of this problem. Just thought others may have a similar issue...I hope this helps others.
