  1. Your wife is correct. However, some folks like the "belt and suspender" approach which is to flip the breaker at the power pole and then start the generator. Personally, I don't do that and I have suffered no ill effects. The intended function of your transfer switch is to handle this exact situation. You start the generator and nothing happens until the generator is provider the proper 120V service at which time a nearly instantaneous transfer of power takes place. What I would do differently is turn OFF the A/C units when you want to do a power transfer. Let the transfer take place and then turn the A/C units back on 1 at a time.
  2. I suggest that you also put a oven thermometer in your convection oven for the best results. My unit is way off on the temp it is set for and the of the oven when it says "ready". We did a full 10# turkey and all the fixing for Thanksgiving and it did an excellent job!
  3. Look at the BF Goodrich option (a Michelin product) to save yourself hundreds of dollars on replacement tires. Both are available using the FMCA tire program.
  4. Knowing nothing about Continental tires on RV's I am not sure where they would fit in other than possibly offering a lower cost product. When it comes to my tires, low cost is not the #1 thing I am looking for. When BF Goodrich and Michelin are made by the same company I look to low price. When it's choice between Two Coins, Goodyear or BF Goodrich/Michelin I am more likely to go with the top of the line choice.
  5. Interesting to see you quoting a post from 2009! Many MiFi options are available today in addition to the use of your own smartphones hot spot option.
  6. My Michelins are 6.5 years old and everyone who saw them said the cracks scared the **** out of them. That includes the RV manufacturer and a local tire company. We full time and we don't cover our tires at any time. I am very disappointed with this result. I did replace the steer tires to ensure my safety but the drive tires are still in place in hopes that I can wait another 6 months or so before I have to spend a whole bunch more to replace those 4. In the past I have had Michelins that were 10 years old on the coach and in much better shape. I am concerned that Michelin is reducing quality to improve profitability. My next tires will likely be BF Goodrich (a Michelin product) for the hundreds of dollars in savings involved. These tires are also included in the FMCA Michelin tire program.
  7. You can also just leave the mounting hardware of the old antenna in place inside and out. You remove the antenna, arm and LNB and just leave the round base in place and the interior crank where it is. Now install the Trav'ler beside base or anywhere on the roof that's convenient. I have done it both ways (as Brett describes as well) depending upon the customers desires. As an addition to what Brett said, you can also cover the hole on the inside with a smoke detector. Double duty!
  8. Check the measurements of the opening the current microwave uses. If it is the same size as a household over the oven convection/mircowave then you are good to go. We have had a couple (or several reasons) starting with a Sharp an Advantium (did not like) and now a GE Profile which is excellent. Some RV's that install microwave units only are a little smaller than the household so make careful measurements.
  9. Also take a look at the Universal Battery brand. They are about 1/2 the price of the Lifelines and I have had mine for about 5 years now. The Lifelines are great as well. My first set lasted 10 years so that helps compensate for the beating you take on the purchase price.
  10. Really? Easier to use CAPS? You still have to hit the exact same keys with your crippled up hands whether you push or don't push the CAPS key. If you said you were nearly blind and using CAPS helped you read what you were posting that might make some sense but since your keys don't get any bigger or easier to use, posting in all CAPS just makes it hard to read and there's no reason not to just push and release the CAPS button to make a post that will be welcome by all.
  11. If you are thinking September and the Albquerque Ballon Fiesta is in early October, you MUST include this in your plans. Janet and I simply cannot by-pass this event any time we are anywhere in the area. You need to make reservations early for the best sites but you can also dry camp at the Sandia Casino (yes, you are very welcome) if you don't have any other options (we almost always stayed at the casino except for the one year we paid to be on the grounds). I mentioned earlier that you should give us some details about your travel plans (places and time available) so we could make some additional suggestions.
  12. The best time is before the kids get out of school or after they have returned to school. Summer vacation times make all the major visitors area more of a chore and less of an attraction. The best thing to see at Mt. Rushmore is Mount Rushmore. Nearby is what was to be the Crazy Horse monument but it will never be anything more than it is today and you can drive by and see it from the road saving the $14 per person admission fee. You can mail me $10 for saving you the cost of admission to help compensate me for the $28 I had to pay! Not too far away is Devil's Tower which I love and the town of Deadwood which is a casino/tourist town. You won't win any money but I still like the place. Now, how much time do you have? It's 1900 mile trip so you are going to burn up a lot of time in travel in both directions. If you have enough time there is also a lot to do along your travels. Let us know if you have time to make some stops along the way.
  13. Must just be the pics. The detail work is amazing. That's why we went to Ernie!
  14. After a 400 mile drive today we are settled in our RV park in Houston. Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Sure hope the turkey will be properly thawed by tomorrow evening!
  15. Of course you have to own an RV whose manufacturer put a ladder back there to take "advantage" of the Kiley mold. Mine does not have that option and I am NOT going to silicone or otherwise attach that thing to my bus.
  16. Ernie, I love the work you did for us with our new carpet but does that wood floor coloring work with the existing wood cabinetry? It sure doesn't look right in the pictures posted.
  17. I recommend not installing them. Why would I join a club who would have me as a member!? (Groucho, sort of) Seriously, why do folks do this. Does the complete member listing still come out each January so we can stalk each other? Does my 192xxx number make me better than the 400xxx member but less worthy than the 3xxx member? This whole goose egg thing escapes me.
  18. Not sure what this has to do with Christmas but if you insist......Happy Thanksgiving!
  19. For me, it was moving the **** out of Florida! Those little ******** were everywhere and there wasn't a **** thing you could do other than stay indoors to avoid them. Hate that State! A couple of times per year you forget how bad the mosquitoes were when you had to deal with those fricking Love Bugs!
  20. Are you expecting any of the mountains to have gotten taller or shorter?
  21. If your coach does not have diesel heat (Webasto, AquaHot) built in you would not want to try to make a conversion (it that's even possible). However, once you have had the comfy cozy warmth generated by a good baseboard heating system such as these there is not any chance in heck that you would ever go back.
  22. I check my tire pressure from time to time (not every day) and that works very well for me. I travel in and out of various temperature ranges frequently. I do "thump" my tires every day and I usually "thump" my tires any time I stop along the way. Do I do it every time? No, but I try to! I like the idea of TPMS but in the last 17 years can't remember a single time where they would have told me anything of any value in advance of a problem. If I was going to add any accessory to my tires it would be a cross-fire system on the dual just to keep the temp/pressure difference on the inside/outside tires the same. I am not convinced that even this is of any proven value but I think I might be able to mentally justified this expense.
  23. My paint job is 22 years old and it's likely because I used good quality waxes on a regular basis. UV protection is important to me (me and me alone) and likely has something to do with my paint job having survived this long. 2 coats of clear is considered a standard (poor by Prevost standards) on most RV's. I suspect that my clear coat failed because the folks that did the repaint in 1994 only did 2 clear coats. If you want a good quality paint job there will be at least 3 clear coats and on many Prevost's 4-6 coats. It just depends upon your willingness to pay $30,000 for the paint job.
  24. I don't see anything about any kind of UV protection with that product so I (me and me alone!) would make another choice. YMMV!
