  1. No worries, I am not coming! It's just not for me. When someone says you only have to drive 30 miles to get to the next town......I have usually already shut down. I did not mean to impugn anything about the RGV, I was just saying it's not for me.
  2. Do your engine batteries get charged when you are parked? Mine do not so I have a charger I keep connected to these when parked for more than a couple of weeks.
  3. Houston, TX is plenty S. for us. FL has many great locations from Orlando South and Arizona is beautiful in most all of there southern areas. You can even travel to the mountains of AZ if you want to see snow for Christmas! I have never been to the RGV and I doubt I ever will. I prefer having city type services and entertainment so RVG is pretty much out for me. Even Austin and San Antonio are going to have very pleasant Winters. So what if you have a week or 2 of cool days and cold nights? You? If you do, you are REALLY going to have to go very South.
  4. I am not sure there is a lot of ambiguity out there. Here is a chart showing what each State and Canadian providence requires. http://www.brakebuddy.com/towing-laws If you follow the guide lines for supplemental braking required by your State (where you are licensed) this "should" CYA. The scary part about the information you have from your insurance company is when they say " I can stop in a safe distance ". If you rear end someone and you don't have supplemental braking my guess would be that they would claim you were not able to stop in a safe distance.

    Tire Pressures?

What you are missing is the weight of each tire. Your steer axle might be 7,000 on the right and 8,640 on the left. If so, you have to adjust both tires to the 8,640 rating. You can make a WAG at the tire pressure requirements by dividing by 2 but it is just that, a guess. It appears your drive axle is already over loaded and some adjustment to the tag axle (under loaded) may be necessary to take some weight of the drives. You can't really be sure where you stand until you can find someone to do a 4 point weighing.
  6. Yes, but you are not going to want to! That antenna can be used to receive the DirecTV SD programming (no HD content) or 1 of the 3 Dish Network satellites at a time. Most of the Dish HD programming is on the 129 satellite so you can get much of the Dish programming but not all (by far). You can remove everything that's there now, seal up the hole as described earlier and place the Trav'ler over that hole adding addition protection from the weather but that roof seal is not completely weather proof so you can't JUST put the Trav'ler over the whole and be done with it. The inside part remains the same. You will also still need to run a new control cable line which will require a new hole in the roof (no big deal!) and you may want to run a 2nd coax into the coach so you can get HD on more than 1 TV by utilizing a 2nd receiver. The Trav'ler is an awesome antenna and just about the only way to get satellite TV (Dish or DirecTV) in your RV with just about zero effort. I used to work for Winegard so if you have more questions just fire away. I, or someone else, will be along to help.
  7. Your wife is correct. However, some folks like the "belt and suspender" approach which is to flip the breaker at the power pole and then start the generator. Personally, I don't do that and I have suffered no ill effects. The intended function of your transfer switch is to handle this exact situation. You start the generator and nothing happens until the generator is provider the proper 120V service at which time a nearly instantaneous transfer of power takes place. What I would do differently is turn OFF the A/C units when you want to do a power transfer. Let the transfer take place and then turn the A/C units back on 1 at a time.
  8. I suggest that you also put a oven thermometer in your convection oven for the best results. My unit is way off on the temp it is set for and the of the oven when it says "ready". We did a full 10# turkey and all the fixing for Thanksgiving and it did an excellent job!
  9. Look at the BF Goodrich option (a Michelin product) to save yourself hundreds of dollars on replacement tires. Both are available using the FMCA tire program.
  10. Knowing nothing about Continental tires on RV's I am not sure where they would fit in other than possibly offering a lower cost product. When it comes to my tires, low cost is not the #1 thing I am looking for. When BF Goodrich and Michelin are made by the same company I look to low price. When it's choice between Two Coins, Goodyear or BF Goodrich/Michelin I am more likely to go with the top of the line choice.
  11. Interesting to see you quoting a post from 2009! Many MiFi options are available today in addition to the use of your own smartphones hot spot option.
  12. My Michelins are 6.5 years old and everyone who saw them said the cracks scared the **** out of them. That includes the RV manufacturer and a local tire company. We full time and we don't cover our tires at any time. I am very disappointed with this result. I did replace the steer tires to ensure my safety but the drive tires are still in place in hopes that I can wait another 6 months or so before I have to spend a whole bunch more to replace those 4. In the past I have had Michelins that were 10 years old on the coach and in much better shape. I am concerned that Michelin is reducing quality to improve profitability. My next tires will likely be BF Goodrich (a Michelin product) for the hundreds of dollars in savings involved. These tires are also included in the FMCA Michelin tire program.
  13. You can also just leave the mounting hardware of the old antenna in place inside and out. You remove the antenna, arm and LNB and just leave the round base in place and the interior crank where it is. Now install the Trav'ler beside base or anywhere on the roof that's convenient. I have done it both ways (as Brett describes as well) depending upon the customers desires. As an addition to what Brett said, you can also cover the hole on the inside with a smoke detector. Double duty!
  14. Check the measurements of the opening the current microwave uses. If it is the same size as a household over the oven convection/mircowave then you are good to go. We have had a couple (or several reasons) starting with a Sharp an Advantium (did not like) and now a GE Profile which is excellent. Some RV's that install microwave units only are a little smaller than the household so make careful measurements.
  15. Also take a look at the Universal Battery brand. They are about 1/2 the price of the Lifelines and I have had mine for about 5 years now. The Lifelines are great as well. My first set lasted 10 years so that helps compensate for the beating you take on the purchase price.
  16. Really? Easier to use CAPS? You still have to hit the exact same keys with your crippled up hands whether you push or don't push the CAPS key. If you said you were nearly blind and using CAPS helped you read what you were posting that might make some sense but since your keys don't get any bigger or easier to use, posting in all CAPS just makes it hard to read and there's no reason not to just push and release the CAPS button to make a post that will be welcome by all.
  17. If you are thinking September and the Albquerque Ballon Fiesta is in early October, you MUST include this in your plans. Janet and I simply cannot by-pass this event any time we are anywhere in the area. You need to make reservations early for the best sites but you can also dry camp at the Sandia Casino (yes, you are very welcome) if you don't have any other options (we almost always stayed at the casino except for the one year we paid to be on the grounds). I mentioned earlier that you should give us some details about your travel plans (places and time available) so we could make some additional suggestions.
  18. The best time is before the kids get out of school or after they have returned to school. Summer vacation times make all the major visitors area more of a chore and less of an attraction. The best thing to see at Mt. Rushmore is Mount Rushmore. Nearby is what was to be the Crazy Horse monument but it will never be anything more than it is today and you can drive by and see it from the road saving the $14 per person admission fee. You can mail me $10 for saving you the cost of admission to help compensate me for the $28 I had to pay! Not too far away is Devil's Tower which I love and the town of Deadwood which is a casino/tourist town. You won't win any money but I still like the place. Now, how much time do you have? It's 1900 mile trip so you are going to burn up a lot of time in travel in both directions. If you have enough time there is also a lot to do along your travels. Let us know if you have time to make some stops along the way.
  19. Must just be the pics. The detail work is amazing. That's why we went to Ernie!
  20. After a 400 mile drive today we are settled in our RV park in Houston. Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Sure hope the turkey will be properly thawed by tomorrow evening!
  21. Of course you have to own an RV whose manufacturer put a ladder back there to take "advantage" of the Kiley mold. Mine does not have that option and I am NOT going to silicone or otherwise attach that thing to my bus.
  22. Ernie, I love the work you did for us with our new carpet but does that wood floor coloring work with the existing wood cabinetry? It sure doesn't look right in the pictures posted.
  23. I recommend not installing them. Why would I join a club who would have me as a member!? (Groucho, sort of) Seriously, why do folks do this. Does the complete member listing still come out each January so we can stalk each other? Does my 192xxx number make me better than the 400xxx member but less worthy than the 3xxx member? This whole goose egg thing escapes me.
  24. Not sure what this has to do with Christmas but if you insist......Happy Thanksgiving!
