  1. In most cases, you cannot use the cable connection. If you have a wall plate with a tiny push button that turns on your OTA TV antenna then it is likely this switch also is used to bring in the cable signal when that light is off. If that's the case you cannot use that connection without some wiring modifications. Let us know how you change from watching OTA TV to Cable TV. Some coaches have a 2nd input out by the Cable In connection labeled Satellite In. If you have one of those connections then it is a direct connection. You can also run a new dedicated coax to where you want to install a satellite receiver or, if you have a connection for an outside TV that you do not use you may be able to use that connection as a run to the receiver. Much depends upon the layout of the coach, how the wiring runs to the various TV's and were a receiver is expected to be located.
  2. Any road can be bad for "hours" but it's very rare for something like that to happen without warning. As long as you can plan ahead and you allow flexibility in your travels there really is no Interstate in the US that I would avoid just because it happens to be Winter.
  3. Personally, I think you are better off doing nothing. If you do start the RV engine then you need to be able to drive it as well. You want everything to fully come up to temperature so you should take it on a 20-30 minute drive before parking it again. Just starting and letting it idle is worse than doing nothing and truly, nothing is required. Just let it sit. Letting the generator sit for the Winter is also not likely a bad idea. If you do want to exercise it then I would recommend starting only the generator and run the loads, take the loads off, let it run a bt longer and then shut it down with no load.
  4. The membership of FMCA is so tiny compared to an organization like AAA or any other auto related organization that anything this club put together would be laughable by comparison. If you want to see some action taken on the roads then get the truckers and the everyday public involved. They outnumber us 1,000,000 to 1.

  6. I have taken 287 all the way into the DFW area and then 114 to 635 and sweep around the top catching 20E on the other side. Otherwise, the same route. You can also go from Amarillo to OK City which adds something like 100 miles but it's all Interstate so it could be a time and fuel saver.
  7. Your choices will likely be FL, TX and SD. TX and SD tags are much more expensive than FL but FL has some taxes the other States do not so you should look at your particular situation and compare these locations. The 3 States do not have any State income tax. If you plan to trade coaches in the future SD tax is only 3% of the difference vs. 6% for TX and FL. Little things can make a big difference so check out all the differences.
  8. Where in the process did this happen? I just tried (I am using Firefox) and it was successful right up to the point where I needed to commit to the registration (which I cannot).
  9. Be sure you head to Kennedy Space Center. Not sure there is too much at Cape Canaveral. There's not much else to do in that area unless you want to go to the beach and then you can drop down to Cocoa Beach.
  10. Note 3) On vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, remove the negative (black) cable from the battery before towing. When finished towing, start the engine within 15 minutes of reconnecting the battery cable. Note 4) Edge, explorer, and Taurus vehicles equipped with the 2.0-liter ecoBoost i-4 engine CANNOT be towed four wheels down. There are the only notes in the FMCA towing guide.

  13. So here's my trip assuming that getting to Yellowstone area is too far. You will already be over 3000 miles and only 7 weeks to get there. From Lake Havasu I would go to the Grand Canyon followed by: 4 corners (short touristy thing) on the way to Cortez, CO to visit the Mesa Verde Cliff Dwellings. Moab area to visit at least Arches and Canyonland. Glenwood Springs, CO for a relaxing hot springs in an excellent facility Golden, CA for a visit to the Coors factory and just a beautiful area Off to Devil's Tower. See if you see anywhere along the way that interests you. Deadwood, SD (Nothing to see in Sturgis if the motorcycles aren't there and you don't want to be there when the motorcycles are there unless you are a biker.) Rapid City, SD area. Mt. Rushmore, Custer, Needles Highway and Crazy Horse. Wall, SD for a quick stop at Wall Drug and get some free ice water....look it up.... MItchell, SD and visit the Corn Palace Dayton, OH for what is likely the best Air/Space museum in the Country. You need 2 days to keep from exhausting yourself. I will recommend a side trip to Niagra Falls but it is a 400 mile detour. If you don't plan another trip in the area then it's worth the miles. Go into Canada (passport needed) so you can see if from that side as it's a much better view. That's about 3200 miles without Niagra and 3600 if you do. So many places to go and so many things to do. Don't try to do too much. Leave yourself plenty of time at each place you want to visit and don't include your driving day as one of those days. In most cases you will get in late or just be too tired. Plan your visits for the next day or 2 or 3.

The direct answer to your question is yes, absolutely. Will it be a plug and play replacement? Maybe not but it certainly is doable. I just updated my 1988 B&W Intec backup system to a full color Voyager backup system. I took everything out except the actual wiring harness from front to rear and RV Cams sent along a wiring diagram explaining what needed to be wired to what and it was just a matter of making some connections with 5 very small wires. They recommend twisting and soldering the wires but using some butt connectors did the job just as well. If I am every walking around just desperate to find something to do I am solder the wires in the future (no, I'm good unless the connections fail!). In any case, drop Tim a line and/or visit their website. I rarely run into a company that does all they promise so I simply cannot say enough good about these folks. Let me know if you have any questions I might be able to answer about my conversion. By the way, I have had NO B/U camera since about 2006 or so giving me serious concerns that what Tim said would actually work. It did and it does! Awesome.

  18. That's what they did. The rack was sand blasted to raw metal and then powder coated. Great job and for a couple of hundred dollars it has held up well for year after year. Seriously, I don't remember what is cost but no matter it was totally worth it.
  19. In 17 year of traveling full time (over 250,00 miles) we have only had tire troubles twice. Both of those events combined cost us less than $820.00 and if you consider that having advance knowledge would have saved us something, we would have only saved the price of one tire (a couple of hundred dollars). Good luck. There's certainly nothing like piece of mind but if you are in the middle of nowhere and you have a flat you will not be any farther ahead if the TPMS tells you that you have a flat or if you feel the thumping indicating that you have a flat. I have never had a slow leak issue that I did not find by checking my tire pressures before I travel so I guess if you are not the kind that makes regular tire pressure checks this should be an excellent investment. I recently had 4 new tires installed. Life is good, right? When I got to my first destination the tag axle tires were reading low. I filled them to the proper pressure and I have not seen any issues since. Must have been something stuck but now, no leaks.
  20. I pulled out my battery rack and took it to someone to be cleaned and powder coated (black). That was something like 10 years ago and it still looks just as it did so many years ago.

    I was going to tell you about the potato but I got beaten out! There are likely a number of different materials that could be used so just keep the general concept in mind and shove something in there that is firm but somewhat malleable. Twist and the housing will come out.
  22. This is how the final installation came out. Tim could not have guided me to a better monitor option. It only took a tiny bit of trimming and the Voyager monitor fit in the dash where the old Intec B&W monitor was. It really looks like a factory installation.
  23. For many, many years I have been without a backup/rear view camera. My Intec system failed and while Intec did offer a system that could be adapted to my wiring harness it was quite expensive so I just passed and went without. Recently I had seen posts about www.rvcams.com having systems that could be adapted to older wiring harnesses and that Tim from RV Cams was very knowledgeable and willing to help. I sent him a couple of e-mails asking for details and some clarifications between the various systems and their compatibility with my wiring harness. Having gotten all the answers I needed I ordered the Voyager hard wired system which would give a a color monitor, day/night capabilities plus audio. I suspect my engine noise will wipe out voice but we will give it a try! I ordered the system on a Monday, it was shipped on Tuesday and I received it on Wednesday (Louisiana to TX). Everything promised was included and it was just a matter of finding time to do the installation. I had already found the old 15 wire cable that Intec used and found a good 12V switched power source before getting started. I could not find the reverse trigger which would have automatically turned on the camera any time I put the RV in reverse but that's OK as I like to run the camera at all times anyway. I had a couple of questions about how to wire the various options and my e-mails were answered very quickly and accurately. I was now ready to proceed. You start by chopping off the head and the tail of the old Intec wiring harness and select 5 wires to carry the signal from one end to the other. Everything says the wires need to be bundled, folded and soldered. While I know that this is likely the best option, I e-mailed RV Cams asking if I could just use wire nuts instead as I was feeling a bit lazy. Tim wrote back that I could be he suggested using butt joints with both wires going into one end and doing a crimp. I like it! So after a bit of cutting a splicing I turned the key and the monitor lit up with a really crappy picture.....bummer....So another e-mail to Tim at RV Cams. I got a quick response that something was very wrong and a suggestion to plug the rear camera directly into the monitor connection to see if one or the other was the problem. Doing so gave me a perfect picture so we now know it's likely something I have done wrong somewhere or there is some kind of interference between the front and the back. I am really hoping I did something wrong. Another e-mail to Tim explaining how I wired the system returned a response I still did not fully understand. Being a bit techy I felt pretty dumb when I had to write back for a better explanation. The response was very clear and I was certain that the way I wired the system was incorrect so it was back to work on my connections. Cut a couple of wires, move them around a bit, and power the system up again and I have a perfect picture! Sweet! I wrote Tim and told him that everything was working exactly as it should and noted that I am pretty good at following instructions but his instructions about one of the wiring setups was not as clear as it should have been and I suggested a modification to the wording. He thanked me for the suggestion and the follow-up. Hopefully, he will do something but it might just be me! Maybe everyone else has done the wiring correctly. In any case, for about 1/3 the cost of what Intec wanted to get my backup camera working I now have a Voyager system up and running. I even put the camera in my closet and closed the door. No light in the closet but when I turned on the monitor I could clearly see everything inside. While I don't often arrive in a campground at night, this will certainly be a great additional tool if I have to in the future. I rarely find a company that is willing to help and who provides exactly what they promise these days but RV Cams is just exactly that. I still have to mount the camera at the back of the coach but that should just be a matter of enlarging the existing hole, running the cable out, installing the included grommet and using a bit of caulk and a couple of screws to secure the camera in place. We are fixed at our current location until the 1st of the year but I may have to just take the old girl for a drive so I can see what's going on behind me! Let me know if you have any questions
  24. Yes, the Kennedy Space Center is very close to Titusville (as is Cape Canaveral). Port Canaveral is maybe 20 minutes distant. If that's your goal then stopping at Titusville makes plenty of sense. I just was in VA with our Prevost and getting around the Fairfax, VA area wasn't too bad but I remembered right away why I was so happy to leave the DC area so many years ago. I completely understand you taking the route you chose and I have done the same thing many times to avoid an area or to include and area. Both are equally good reasons. Have a great trip. The only good thing I ever found about Titusville (lived there 3 years) was all those shuttle launches and the Space Center. Have a great trip.
  25. Be aware that there is no foliage left to see so if you are taking that route for that reason you will be disappointed. If you just want to drive an extra 110 miles to avoid the DC beltway that's OK, too. Not sure why you (anyone) would want to go to Titusville on their way to Orlando but if what you want to do is go to Port Canaveral then you should go to Port Canaveral. There is a great campground on the ocean and on the canal that leads the great ships in an out of the port. It's great fun to watch them come or go if your timing for their arrival or departure coincides. I used to live in Alexandria and if it was me (and it's not!) I would go right down 95 and get there as fast as I could but your plan won't delay things very long. I just don't think you will really be doing much sightseeing along the way.
