  1. We have done The 101 where it connects to The 5 in LA and taken it all the way to Aberdeen, WA in the 40 footer. I'd do it again in the 43 footer - towing with both. We have traveled some of The 101 around Olympic National Park but I don't remember the road conditions - more sight seeing for me.
  2. The wind does not blow in August and trust me, you don't want to be here then. Too hot. I love the game of golf. Unfortunately two acl reconstructions, two rotator cuff repairs and 1 knee replacement has kept me from the game since about 2007. Didn't matter the temperature except for my 1 rule. If it was 40 degrees or below I did not play golf. I play 4 to 5 and sometimes more games a week and on weekends sometimes 36 holes. Had my handicap down to a 10 with a typical 11 and once a 9. Didn't matter the high temperatures. Played without a glove and just kept a towel handy to dry the hands with. Used non-slip grips (corded) The Hill Country has rivers and lakes so you are going to have humidity. Maybe not as much as down here on the coast but it will still be there. Different areas of the Hill Country are going to have the varying prices on housing. There will be a wide spread range of costs. You can find houses that are inexpensive and then those that are half a mil or more. I like using Zillow.com when looking at housing. It populates the map and shows the price of the house displayed on the map. That way one can see an easy representation of what they can afford. Take San Marcos for example, a rapidly growing area, you can find houses from $100k (fixer upper) or less and on upward. You can easily find something in your price range but then have to determine if it is what you really want. p.s., that wind keeps us warm in the winter when blowing from the Southwest and cool in the summer from sweat evaporation. One thing is for sure. If you don't like the weather in Texas, just wait 5 minutes.
  3. Here are the Cities In The Texas Hill Country When i retired in 1984 from the military I had married a Texan and her parents lived here in Texas City. DW was born in Corpus. I was born in Central Mass. (I lived there for 18 years but it was an accident of birth.) I did not want any part of snow and cold so decided to settle down in Texas. We both worked and put up with the Texas Summers, hurricanes, storms, etc. Since another retirement in 2007 we started traveling again after several hiatus years. We now escape the heat and the hurricanes by traveling during the summer months to more moderate climes. The coastal areas and hill country areas have temperatures during the summer in the 90's with many in the upper 90's. The coastal areas have much more humidity and the only saving grace is going from house to AC Car to AC building. Doing anything outside in the Summertime will always result in soaking clothes with sweat. I'd much rather sweat than freeze. One eventually becomes acclimatized to the Summer heat and knows when to stop and rest with plenty of water. The lows during the winter along the Gulf Coast is similar in averages to many of the Hill Country areas. If I had to do it all over again and circumstances permitted I would choose the Hill Country with vacations along the Gulf Coast. Travel to the many areas of Texas during the different seasons and make a decision on which area you would be more comfortable in. Today, Johnson City, TX, and for the next 10 days, has better weather than we do here on the coast.
  4. Keigm, I don't think there is any one place that is "paradise," excluding those cities with the name Paradise. The Texas Gulf Coast, and Florida, have hurricanes. More than once we have evacuated because of them. As you get away from the Texas Gulf Coast you run into other items that you may not wish to have, floods, cold, heat, etc. South Dakota would be to cold for me. The Hill Country of Texas is nice but it can get cold there. As for the Hurricanes, if you get about 100 miles or more inland the threat is considerably reduced. Others should be along with their opinions shortly.
  5. I get cold just reading posts about cold. Stop it anytime. We have a chill spell right now. it is almost 9 a.m. and the temp is 41˚. Today and tomorrow will be chilly but NO SNOW. Then it warms up into the high 50's and low 60's. As far as I'm concerned, below 70˚ is freezing. I'm going to try and talk DW into warmer climes next year. We are Summer Birds, we leave Texas towards end of may and return around October to beat the heat.
  6. Very nice. Just need one more thing. A pad right next to it for visitors. 😀 We were in NOLA (well Belle Chasse) until the 16th, then Lafayette for 4 nights. Missed you, but not on purpose.
  7. Everyone knows! It was getting a pushed jump start.
  8. Had them on the last 2008 MH and they were fine. Considerably cheaper also. When these need changing I'll go to the Toyo.
  9. press and hold the enter button and the retract button at the same time for over 5 seconds and see what happens.
  10. Yes, when the cover is off their is a safety switch that opens or closes and the system will not run. If you want to run it with the cover off you have to depress or somehow push that switch. Another thing is that the antifreeze that is used is not your typical bought antifreeze from an auto-store. There are two colors, pink and green and they should NOT be mixed. Did your system come with a refractometer? It is one way to make sure the glycol is the proper proportion.
  11. Eric, Use a turkey baster (don't tell wife) and if the fluid is hot remove enough to get to the hot fill mark. Then as Herman stated check the solenoids. My conversation with Rudy Leggett of Houston, Aqua Hot expert, AND Aqua Hot customer services, the system needs to be run every 30 days (or as Herman stated up to 45 days) and at the same time turn the thermostat in the coach up to exercise the heat exchangers. This will ensure a long life. (Supposed to anyhow) By running every day, turn the burner on and let it cycle at least once. On start up you'll hear a whine and then a poof when it ignites. Check the exhaust and feel for a steady flow and no diesel smell. A diesel smell indicates a partially clogged, or starting to clog, nozzle. The clogging happens when the system is not run regularly. The residual diesel around the nozzle will gel causing the clogging condition, According to Rudy, if they are exercised like they are supposed to be exercised they should go 2 and maybe 3 years without needing service. I'm still going to work on a shorter time frame for servicing.
  12. Mission Bell has not been reviewed since 2017 but it was a 7.7 out of 10 then with 2 good reviews and one bad from 2015. I'd throw the bad one out. RFSod, please post a review in RV Park Reviews after you have stayed there. It helps us other travelers.

Texas City Disaster Yep, Killed over 500 people and injured over 5000. When the Grandcamp exploded residents went to the dock area to watch the fire and firefighters. Kids were let out of school to go watch. The Grandcamp's anchor was blown across the city. Another ship, the High Flyer also exploded because of the Grandcamp's fire and a ghird was destroyed. The High Flyer propeller, it is huge, was found over a mile away. Some old time videos: Texas City, TX 1947 Explosion Parking lot 1/4 mile away from blast.
  14. Richard, The dealers will tell you that you don't need any other license but a car license, just to sell you any RV. My first Texas DL test was in 1984 when I retired from the military. So many things have changed in the handbook since then that I almost don't recognize it.

After the 1900 Hurricane, Galveston was raised 17 feet at the seawall and sloped downard 8 ft per 1500 feet. Some house were raised 11 feet. Source: The Galveston Raising
  16. Dic.k, nice work, you are truly a craftsman. Check in frequently and tell us how it is going. Welcome to the forum.
  17. It was 72 here today, tomorrow will be 74, then a cooling spell then back up. Earlene had cabin fever last month so we are now in NOLA.

Fisherman's wharf and other's in the area. Don't know 'bout Don's. Where is that?
  19. Unfortunately I don't have any window that anyone could climb through. They are all to small. Herman, I need a reminder to put down the Antenna so the ignition key goes near the Winegard controller. I also have a little red cord that I slip on the top of the steering wheel. It hangs down to remind me to retract the jacks. Someone mentioned the brake button. I took a piece of PVC, cut it to length, cut a trough thru it and just snap it over that little yellow button. Brakes cannot be released without taking the PVC fitting off.

Moody Gardens is another place to visit. In Texas City at the Grey Hound Park is a festival of lights plus some rides. If the weather is nice it is worth the $10 (was last year.) All the places bill stated to eat are good. On the mainland, Texas City, Gringo's Mexican Food. If you want less expensive Mexican go into town and Taqueria Valencia and Taqueria Jaliance (Sp on both) Also is Grand Prize BBQ and it is good. Further on up the road off the Interstate is Masa Sushi if you are into Japanese food. On the other side of the highway is a Gumbo bar and I enjoy the heck out of their gumbo. It is next to a 5 Guys Hamburger joint. If you have never had a 5 Guys you need to try it. Here's the kicker - travel East on Hwy 646 to Hwy 3 and turn right. You are in Dickinson,TX, and just down the road about a mile or so on the left hand side is "The Fish Place," and you can get all you can eat catfish and 2 sides for around 12 bucks, Whe you leave there just take hwy 3 back to I-45 and Galveston. They have a diverse menu. If we were there we'd put on a lunch or dinner for you but hey, we are going to enjoy New Orleans food. For a quick and cheap buffet we enjoy the Golden Coral in Galveston.

That is a nice CG. Did you wave at me as you passed onthe I-State? Did you get held up going West? When we went bu there was about a 10 mile creep and crawl
  22. Eric, Don't know why you use the dead bolt. We never use the dead bolt. I have a 2015 Tour 42QD, sister to yours and it has the remote controls for compartments and bottom lock on door. Both the dead bolt and the lower lock are nothing more than to keep honest people and kids out. A large screwdriver will will pop open either of those locks with little effort, or pop the door itself. Also, mine came with 3 keys and one key opens all, including bays, except the dead bolt, I have two on me. one is on the key ring in my pocket and goes where I go and a detachable key from that ring. That is the one I use for the ignition and when we stop and satellite antenna goes up it goes next to the Wally as a reminder to put the sat antenna down. The set my wife has goes in the glove box of the toad. Keyless entry to the TOAD so we can get to it anytime.
  23. Carl, so true and in every organization, civilian or government.
  24. Thanks Joe. We lost our 2008 MH to Harvey and the insurance was good to us...otherwise.. The chrome is a nice touch. The also have LED lights on the front that goes down the inside of the opening to the generator compartment. Each leg is 21" long and is in a "\ /" shape. I took out the "outside kitchen" for more storage space. The outside kitchen slide out of the compartment and had a 1 burner induction top, a small refrigerator or freeze (owners choice of which switch to press) and a small roll up compartment. The burner in my opinion was to close to the side of the MH and I would never cook bacon or other splattering items on it. Roland, We are staying one night at that KOA in Scott. They have a new back section that is real amiable to long RV's towing. Billy's Boudin and Cracklin are just outside the RV Park. No eat-in, just take out.
