Refueling At Pilot/FlyingJ

Today I called the Pilot/Flying J corp office to question how the RV Plus card was to be used.  She gave me a long explanation, but the bottom line was this:
 

-  At the RV pump(s): Used exactly like a credit card at any service station.

 

-  At the big rig pumps:  Pull up and stop at an open pump, note the pump number, go inside, stand in line, tell clerk the pump number and approximately how many gallons of fuel you need...she'll run your card for that much...go outside pump fuel, go inside, stand in line, tell clerk you are finished and need to total actual fuel taken and a receipt, clerk runs card for correct amount, destroys first receipt used for the estimate, and gives you the new receipt, you leave.

 

I expressed my displeasure....since I can go to my friendly Wal Mart, scan my Visa (or Walmart Gift card for an extra discount), pump the fuel, take the receipt and leave....she just said that's the way it is.

 

So if anybody can swipe their RV Plus Card at the truck pumps, I'd sure like to know how you are doing it.

Here's how I do it.  I pull up to the truck lane pump, swipe my RV Plus card, input my pin, and the pump turns on.  I pump diesel into my tank, and put the nozzle back into the holder when done.  Usually the receipt printer is broken or out of tape, so I take a photo of the amount and gallons with my phone.  I drive away, and pay my bill when it is emailed to me.

Nope we paay cash! I have gotten pretty good on the estimation of miles per gallon and the terrain. Calculate based upon guessed miles per gallon into the miles driven times the cost per gallon, add ten bucks and send Janet in. Pump comes on, fuel up and she goes back for the change. I rarely use the big boys, Flying J and the like, almost always save 10 to 15 cents by using the local stations off the highway., I have been in some crazy places and with a trailer to boot. This year no trailer heading south in January, going to flat tow the new to us Jeep wrangler. Living the dream!

Let's check something. I just got a new RV PLUS charge card today and had to activate it. This card looks a little different as this one is more yellow in cooler and the old one was more red. Probably no big deal but what I did find was when you log in click on the card management heading that should take you to a screen showing all the cards issued to you and their status. The interesting thing I found today was the control number on the card didn't match the one listed for the new card. You can edit the number to reflect the number on your card. You do that buy clicking on Update Control#/Status this allows you to change the control number/pin number plus click on Activate to change the status. 

Five, I would double check that the information is correct and showing the pin on the back of your card and active. Let me know what you find.

SAVING MONEY AT FLYING J

I wish FMCA had a swipe and save card like Good Sam has.

We use the Good Sam Swipe and Save card, put in first at the pump.

Life member gets 6 cents off for gas , 8 cents for diesel at the pump.

Swipe your bonus points credit card, get 2 to 3 times the cost

in bonus points. So call it double dipping.

Now the Flying J charge card . Swipe and waite for your 

e-mail to pay your card. No hot spots , no Wi-Fi no bill!

So if your not on time with payment , whats next no card, stranded no gas.

So lets see if we can get FMCA to work out arrangements with Flying J. for a

FMCA Swipe and Save Card for at the pump, for the RV island pumps.

I always use my Sams Club, Sams Plus MasterCard for all of my diesel and gasoline purchases. I receive 5% discount on first $6,000 annually, after $6,000 discount is reduced to 1% for remainder of year.  The 5% is paid out annually [via mailed check] on your sign up anniversary date.

When I pull into the truck lanes, I click on the 'tractor' button and then I enter my code and it work fine for a complete fill up. Most time I have to go inside for a receipt. I also cannot figure out how to get DEF without going inside.

Works great but I make sure when I finished fueling and have to go inside that I pull forward so I am not blocking the next customer

Used the J for many years. Always had to go to the fuel desk for my receipt. Was usually clipped to a circular device. Spun it until I could see my receipt. Snapped it off and went on my way. Always pull ahead if you can.  I even parked if I was going to be inside for a meal or a shower.

Maybe things have changed. The pumps did not print receipts.  The printer was at the fuel desk.

Five, we used our Good Sam Pilot FJ fuel card all summer.

Asks for your ID or PIN, I cant remember what they call it

it asks for Tractor, reefer. i press either or, depends on my mood

It will ask if you want DEF, for me NO

Pump turns on.

 

If I had to go inside I probably would go elsewhere.

You don't need the reefer, that's the one with the red dye, ok unless DOT should happen to stick it, takes several fill ups to get that out of the system. I bought 255.89 worth on my FJ/Pilot card last Saturday, inserted the card entered the control#, took picture of the pump# and total, then drove off.

 I was under the impression the red dye was eliminated, and now it's simply on- or off-road diesel fuel(no road tax charged), after LSD was banned.

The red dye is used universally to indicate off-road diesel that is not taxed.

Ha, I was told that is only itemizing it for taxes on the receipt, the fuel was no different. I’ll try that again and see if it looks dyed.

LSD & PCP, has been banned for a loooong time! 

I  filled up at a Conoco Truck Stop today. $263.13 for 90.1 gallons/$2.919 a gallon!  That was on Hwy. 59S service road, across the road was Flying J at $3.329 cash or $3.379 credit...don't know what you boys have been smoking!  A little LSD?

CARL, East come easy go😎 I worked to hard for what i have to spend so look for the way toooo streeeeeach it. Those FJ and Pilot places, the fuel prices are /seem inflated taking advantage of the big rigs. I asked a delivery guy one day in Grand Junction what the difference was in the fuel....he replied "PROFIT!!!!!!" I said that is it...He replied "THAT IS IT" so i only use them if in a real hurry or real tired.

Because FJ and Pilot are ripping off the RVers, that is my last choice for fuel.  If I have to fuel at on of the rip off places, I gt just enough plus a few gallons to get to my next destination and fuel there.  We use GAs Buddy to check fuel prices for or cities down the road.  If it comes to it, I'll drop the trailer in the parking lot fuel, reconnect and move on.

You are correct P/FJ doesn't cater to RVs. But no one does. It is either Autos or Big Rigs.

But P/FJ does provide an RV fueling lane, dump and propane also some of the freshest fuel around. But they also provide a great deal for the trucker, showers, parking where they can get their needed rest and lots of fairly good coffee and food.

It is your prerogative to purchase fuel where you want to, But to say they are ripping off RVers is unfair. Sorry just my opinion.

With the GS card the discount makes them competitive. Up here we have Royal Farms, their prices are good, their Fried Chicken is even better . Last couple of times I sent my DW inside to pick up some chicken while I was filling the coach.

What makes you say something like that? You have the choice where you buy fuel. I find the price especially with the discount is close enough to the lowest price in the area it isn't worth the aggravation of unhooking and hunting around to save a penny or two. Then having to return and hook up again is not what I want to do.

It is your prerogative to purchase fuel where you want to, But to say they are ripping off RVers is unfair. Sorry just my opinion

Last time, I used a RV fueling lane, was at a casino.  Cars would not let me out !  With the help of some employees, I finally made it...that was he last time, 4 years ago!

Pilot/Flying J are not "ripping off RVers" they just charge a premium for the convenience, if you can call it that, of buying their diesel.  As for the truckers, they are not paying what we pay, they all have contracts for much cheaper fuel.  Ever seen a Wally World truck at any commercial refueling station.  No, and  you won't, they have their own refueling capability...as well as showers,  food, etc at the Wal Mart Distribution centers around the country.  WM takes care of their drivers.

Ripping off based on fuel prices? Then lets talk about the $0.40 to $0.60 jump in price crossing the border from Maryland or Virginia into Pennsylvania. How can fuel be $3.09 in one place, and then just over the border $3.75. From what I see, PA charges $0.7470/gal on diesel and "only" $0.582/gal on gasoline. And these amounts exclude the Federal tax that also must be paid, and both are much higher than all other mainland states. This is what I call a rip off, and the roads in PA aren't even that good to show for it. First time I've seen such high taxes on diesel, and the last time I'll fill up in PA if I can help it. PA had the second highest tax on diesel and gasoline in the nation. Was the highest by far, but California always likes to be number one in all things stupid. Perhaps their new taxes have not kicked in yet, but I have read that they will be soon. Regardless, the PA tax has an effect on pump prices of nearby states. The nearby retailer can add a bit to their profits, but with PA nearby, it looks good.
