This picture shows the meter connected with the diode rotated 180deg.
Negative lead to the left side ,but connected to the bar or banded end of the diode and the positive lead connected to the arrow end of the diode.
In this setup the meter reads .554 volts. This is the standard reading of a good diode, they have a 1/2 volt drop across the junction when conducting.
