Directv has launched its last satellite?
kaypsmith replied to f474120's topic in RV Internet to Go/Staying in Touch
I suspect that is where it is all going. I had Direcpc then Hughesnet for 12 years, first satellite down and telephone up, that was awful but better than just telephone, then sat both directions, which was pretty good, but throttled after 256 meg in a 24 hour period. ATT is of course looking to change all service to streaming within a given period of time, so internet connection will be a must eventually. -
My daughter has a dear friend that bought one of those lots near Orlando, I will check for the name of the CG this weekend. That lady and her husband have told me that it was a very good investment and they loved that style of living. They maintain a home here in B'ham., Al., and only return to B'ham., for the three hottest months of each year since retirement 10 years ago.

Directv has launched its last satellite?
kaypsmith replied to f474120's topic in RV Internet to Go/Staying in Touch
Based on that report, it looks as though Directv will soon be defunct. Dish TV may soon be our only alternative. But indications that ATT is looking to have fiber in all areas? I was lucky to get U-verse at my house this year, but the speed is too slow for streaming, which means that if fiber is not installed to my house, and I doubt that will happen, I will be forced to Dish at some point. -
I have never heard of that name before your post above, but a Google search led me to their website. I have a Legget&Platt both in the MH and now in the S&B home also. The ad of course states that it is designed for comfort because of the shaking of the RV. Personally, very few people sleep in any bed while going down the road because of the lack of restraint in the event of an accident. But if you find them more appealing than other brands, then go for it is my feelings towards what bedframe to choose. Most of us know that almost any memory foam or latex mattress is best to use on an adjustable bed because of their flexibility, so find one that fits your comfort needs the best and go with that one. My wife has health issues that almost dictate the use of an adjustable bed, and I personally will never go back to the old flat bed, as I also enjoy the added comfort, as well as the fact that you can raise the bed both head and feet to increase space in the sleeping compartment when not in use. Good luck hunting.

BUILDING RV PAD / TEXAS HILL COUNTRY
kaypsmith replied to eric@babin.com's topic in General Discussion
Here in Alabama, we call that stuff "RAP", stands for removed asphalt pavement. I cant tell how we make it stick back together in the shade here, that's what PM's are for. -
I would not be too frantic about the fact that Directv is going to stop SD by the end of this decade, at least that is their plans. The satelites that now broadcast sd are not scheduled to fall out of the sky, only SD will cease. According to their techs, HD will gradually be moved to those satelites, meaning of course that most likely your now SD dish will still receive broadcast from the satelites that now receive SD on. I would suspect that the satelites that now broadcast HD will start broadcasting UHD at that point. A little inside info, and some speculation on my part only because of previous experiences.

Fuel stops at the flying J. Any discounts on fuel
kaypsmith replied to basspond51's topic in Membership/Benefits
I think that they use competitive shopping, they do not use samples of mom/pop, or Walmart in the sample, only other truck stops that are competitive with their operation on the immediate area of the fuel stop. ………….. Jim! -
Mechanic wrecked my RV - what are my rights?
kaypsmith replied to noontide's topic in Laws and Legislative Action
I lived in Florida for 12 years too long, and was licensed to sell, and sold insurance in Florida. A call to the insurance commissioner with detailed info on how they are handling the claim will get the fastest results for you, and their insurance company responding to you. -
I don't think that he is referring to charging the batteries, I think he is referring to causing a draw against the house batteries, if the inverter is turned off, it will not draw against the house batteries when shore or generator is not present. If the inverter is turned on without shore or generator power, then yes it will draw instantly against the house batteries. If inverter is on there is a load against the house batteries, no phantom, just the way it works. If inverter/charger is in the off position, there will be no draw against the house batteries.

The air dryer should have a purge valve on it also. May not be your problem, but is definitely a good starting point. It was also a good opportunity to bring to attention that it should be done routinely, some of us older owners take it for granted that newer owners may not have been versed on this procedure.
-
When was the last time that you purged the air tanks?

I second next generation for Super Carl, just order it with super singles like the owner of that coach probably did, very doable these days, and no worries about dual kissing. That might be contagious. LOL

Verizon New Non Capped Unlimited Service.
kaypsmith replied to cwswine's topic in RV Internet to Go/Staying in Touch
Yes, I also remember 300 bps modems, lay the receiver of the phone in the cradle of the modem. I agree that 70 kbs is pathetic. -
If the new seats are properly attached to that steel plate, that is with bolts all the way through the steel plate then using lock nuts with the proper size washers, I doubt that the seat will become a projectile unless the crash is non survivable anyway. The worst scene that I have witnessed to date was a class A that was approaching an intersection on back beach road, Panama city beach Florida, a dually pickup ran the red light and crashed into the door on the right side front as many are mounted. The pickup took the entire front clip off the coach, including the door. The passenger, a lady probably was asleep at the time of the crash, before 5.00 AM, when I witnessed the crash, was left there in her captain chair with a three point belt properly in place, she was unharmed physically, only emotionally shaken. The driver, her husband and I agreed, THANK GOD for that safety belt, and the fact that it was in use at the time.

If replacing the old chairs with new chairs anyway, I would spring for the comfort of knowing that I was now under the three point system. I personally can not find a reason to use the older two point style since you are upgrading anyway. Also there are some less expensive ways to accomplish the newer technology, such as looking into RV salvage yards for newer style chairs, or check on ebay under RV captain chairs, and RV restraint systems also.

The only way one can expect a perfect reading on any battery is to charge the battery fully, completely disconnect that battery from any device such as the inverter/charger as soon as, if not before power is disconnected from the charging device, then let it rest for 30 minutes to 24 hours, check the voltage as soon as disconnected and then compare that reading with the 30 minute/ 24 hour reading. If you see a great difference under those conditions then suspect a faulty battery. An inverter/charger by the very nature of the device, remember that it is automatic failover, will immediately start discharging the connected batteries as soon as power, whether it is shore or generator or alternator is disconnected. The inverter/charger goes into inverter mode as soon as external 120 volt ac is disconnected thus causing drain on the connected batteries, even if no ac is being pulled, the inverter uses 12 volts for it's internal maintenance functions, including cooling fans which start immediately then go back off after test are performed by the power on self test (POST) of the inverter it self. I would never expect to see house battery voltage to be the same as the chassis battery voltage unless I had performed my test as I described above.

Front Slideout Inoperative: 2008 Winnebago Adventurer
kaypsmith replied to FunGlamping08's topic in Slideouts
If the motor still runs, that is a indication that the solenoid is not a problem unless it wont stop running. The statement indicates that travel is not working. This would that either a gear is stripped, or a cable has jumped track in my opinion. Welcome to the forum, others will chime in and be of more assistance, I'm sure. -
Rich, it is a msw inverter/converter, 3 stage, was replaced less than 4 months ago with a brand new one. Old one experienced a surge caused by an open neutral.

One other possibility, he may have met with a terrible prankster up to no good, and unfortunately there are some scum out there that will do such deeds. Not taking up for Pilot/FlyingJ, only stating sad but true facts. I hope that he does in fact report to the proper authorities and is able to get relief for all the troubles. Wishing good luck to come for the poor soul, as this is a tragic situation for anyone to have to go through. -
Thanks for letting us know the fix, I personally prefer the stick on ones that feel like sandpaper. Available at most RV stores and I have found them at Walmart in the automotive dept.

It seems to me that if the diesel tank at the filling station would need to be many gallons for the pump to pick it up and move to a vehicle tank. DEF weighs more than 9# per gallon, and diesel weighs 7.05 gallons and will not mix. The station pick up located at the bottom of the tank is several inches off of the bottom. Brett beat me to the save key so won out on almost the same reply. As he pointed out, the state agency should be contacted for investigation, and they will certainly do just that if a complaint is filed. -
2500 Allison and no full throttle downshift - at times
kaypsmith replied to elizabethmeyer's topic in Chassis
Has anyone checked to see if the rear end has the correct gear ratio? I have over the years known of instances that the gear ratio was to high for the auto transmission which caused very similar problem with the downshift at WOT. As a matter of fact, the jeep wrangler that I use as a toad had the very same symptoms when I bought it used. It had slightly oversized tires and absolutely would not downshift at WOT, I replaced the tires with the correct size tires and the problem was immediately fixed. Not saying that is your problem, but just a possibility, manufacturers have been known to put the wrong differentials into the right case, meaning that the marking on the outside is different than what is on the inside. An easy check for you is to check the speedometer reading with a very good GPS set to the lowest update setting most can be programmed to as little as ten feet. -
